Leader of the Gospel group Edwin Hawkins Singers,   They had a huge hit with "Oh Happy Day"  (#4-1969).  They also backed Melanie on "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)"  (#6-1970)

The last song always reminds me of the Kent State riots at Northern Illinois University in May 1970.
