Sure Won't Be Watching the Emmys Tonight

Essentially the same reason I don't watch the Oscars or the Grammys.  I have no one to pull for because I haven't seen hardly anything nominated.  Just takes the fun out of it.

I mostly watch network TV.  And the Emmy people don't like the networks.

There is absolutely no drama that I watch nominated nor even any people in them.

Comedy is just barely better with just one sitcom, "black-ish" nominated as well as Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross, "black*ish" 's actor and actress for best as well as Allison Jamey for "Mom" best actress.

Songs From the Summer of '71-- Part 9, August 1, 1971: 'Sweet Hitchhiker'

Nothin' finer than going back fifty years ago and doing some 'membering as happens with this show by Bob Stroud on Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM, the Drive.  And, we still have one more coming on Sunday, September 5.  That will be his final of four installments until next June when on the first Sunday he'll do the Summer of 1972, another college year for me.  And, those college years were a WHOLE lot of fun for me.

The Story Behind 'Michelle' by the Beatles

"MICHELLE"

WRITERS:  Paul McCartney and John Lennon, 1967

Before the Beatles' "Michelle" took the prize, no rock band had ever won a Top Song Grammy.  In truth, "Michelle" couldn't have rocked less. -- it swayed to a lilting melody penned by McCartney to recall his days as a student taking in Parisian culture.

But, because McCartney didn't speak French, he reached out to a friend for an assist with the translated part.  He also got help from Lennon, who devised the "I love you, I love you, I love you" bridge of the song.

"Michelle" went on to become one of only two Top Song winners to feature non-English lyrics.  The other:  "Volare," the very first winner in the category in the Grammy's inaugural year, 1959.

Music Deaths: Geoff Emerick, Abbey Road Engineer

GEOFF EMERICK, 72

Died October 2, 2018

Engineer at Abbey Road studio on most of the Beatles recordings.  Received Grammys for "Sgt. Pepper's" and "Abbey Road" and Paul McCartney's "Band On the Run."

To have been there and participated in all that.

Remembering Glen Campbell-- Part 2: A Movie, TV Show, and More Hits

His boyish good looks got him a role opposite John Wayne in the 1969 movie "True Grit and his own TV show "The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour" on CBS from 1969 to 1972.

Over the years, the hits continued with songs like "Rhinestone Cowboy" and "Southern Nights."  And, he had lots of honors:  six Grammys, 1968 CMA  Entertainer of the Year, three American Music Awards and, later, induction into the Country Hall of Fame and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement.

However, he did not have much luck in the marriages.  He had three divorces and engagement to fellow country star Tanya Tucker.  He finally met Kimberly Woolen in 1982 and remained married to her for the rest of his life.

The end became known when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2011.

Some More On Glen Campbell-- Part 2: Country Crossover

He was among a wave of country crossover stars into the pop market including Johnny Cash, Roy Clark and Kenny Rogers and like many of his contemporaries, enjoyed success on television where he had a weekly audience of fifty million for his "Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour" on CBS from 1969-1972.

Campbell had more than 70 albums.  There was a documentary "Glen Campbell I'll Be Me" about his 2011-2012 farewell tour and his decline from Alzheimer's.

The song "I'm Not Gonna Miss You" won a Grammy for best country song in 2015.

A sharecropper's son and one of 12 children, he was born outside of Delight, Arkansas.  He learned to play the guitar at age 4.

Lifetime Achievement Grammys Announced

The National Academy of recording Arts & Sciences will give Lifetime Achievement Grammys this year to Ruth Brown, Linda Ronstadt, Jefferson Airplane, Earth Wind & Fire and Herbie Hancock.

Earlier This Year, the Beatles Grammy Special

From the November 14, 2013 Yahoo! TV, WRAP "The Beatles Get Grammy Special on CBS.

There was a two-hour special aired on CBS earlier this year "The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to the Beatles."  Contemporary artists performed the songs of the Beatles along with archival footage of 50 years ago.

The show aired on February 9, 2014, the 50th anniversary of that dramatic appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show back in 1964.

The Beatles' initial appearance on Ed Sullivan is regarded as a pivotal moment in TV history with an estimated 74 million people watching.

The special will be taped on January 27th, the day after the Grammy awards and w aired at 8 p.m. on Feb. 9th.

The Beatles eventually won 7 Grammys, including three in 1996 for "The Beatles Anthology" album and "Free As a Bird."

I watched this special and sure enjoyed it.  Of course, it was the Beatles who got me interested in music.

The Robert Palmer Girls Today

Robert Palmer won a Grammy in 1987 for Best Rock Vocal Performance, Male for his "Addicted to Love."  .  The famous video for his song was released the year before and featured "fembot beauties."  I was never sure if they were really pretty or really ugly.  But definitely, they were something different.

Patty Elias was a guitarist and has since sold her Grammy at a garage sale in Santa Monica, California.

Kathy Davies was the drummer and still can't watch the video, but remembers having a great view of the late Robert Palmer's butt.

Mak Gilchrist was the bassist and remembers the musicians union demanded they be paid union wage, despite not playing the instruments.

Julia Bolino was lead guitarist and says there were five musicians behind the camera, they were just miming.

Two of the "girls" have children who think of them as hot moms.

For the video, they wore really red lipstick, white faces and super black, short hair.  Their job was essentially just to move back and forth.  They had short, short dresses on showing lots and lots of leg.

Kind of reminded my of very slow-moving Ikettes.
