JSS: OK, Call It Global Warming-- Japanese Beetles-- Long Distance, Please
JSS-- Just Some Stuff
1. OK, CALL IT GLOBAL WARMING-- After this past two weeks, go ahead and call it Global Warming. You'll get no argument from me.
2. JAPANESE BEETLES-- They're back. But their numbers don't approach anything like in their heyday ten years ago. They do two things, eat and procreate. I often find one on top of another and they are prime targets. They can't move fast and at least I know I get a female so no eggs and new beetles from her.
3. LONG DISTANCE, PLEASE-- I read that President Nixon called the Apollo 11 folks fifty years ago. Hopefully he had a REAL lot of quarters, dimes and nickels to cover THOSE long distance charges in 1969!! Another quarter, please.
I remember calling Liz in Illinois when my family was on vacation in North Carolina when I was in high school and college. I would have to gave a pocketful of change. It seemed that every few minutes the operator was asking for more money. This was an expensive thing to do.

JSS: 3 Inches of Snow This Morning-- Got Limbs?-- Squirrel Wars, Part 2
JSS-- Just Some Stuff
1. 3 INCHES OF SNOW THIS MORNING-- It was just so wonderful to wake up to 3 inches of snow on the ground this morning. DON'T even think about calling it Global You-Know-What!!! At least the white stuff was nice enough to stay off the roads, drive ways and sidewalks.
And we had another 8 inches of snow on April 14.
2. GOT LIMBS?-- I've got plenty. And since it rained and snowed all day yesterday and is in the process of melting today, not likely I'll get a chance to do any burning this weekend. We can only burn on the weekends in April and May.
3. SQUIRREL WARS, PART 2-- Well, after being overwhelmed by three squirrels intent on getting at the bird feeders (and their close allies, the chipmunks) a few weeks back, I brought in the big guns, two store bought feeders designed specifically to thwart those bushy-tailed rats.
So far, success, but I'm sure they'll figure out a way to get that seed.

Global Blah Blah Blah
I am still at odds what to call this Al Gore thing. Looking at the 12 degree temp reading this morning by our front window and seeing that we have gotten over freezing here in northern Illinois since last Wednesday and with three more days of it predicted, I just have a REAL HARD time calling it by Al's name.
To me, the "w" word means the opposite of cold, we we sure aren't getting.
I mentioned my problem with calling it the "G.W." words on one of my forums and one person said he called it Global Blah Blah Blah. Sounds like a good name to me.
I was even thinking about going to Athens, Ohio, tonight to see my team play the University of Ohio, but am glad that didn't work out. I wouldn't sit out in the cold at night, anyway.
It is way too early to be this doggone COLD!!
Any Better ideas for a Name? --RoadDog

OK, Let's Call It Something Else: That Global You-Know-What "Thang"
My apologies to those folks who live and breathe the dire consequences of this, but, the Earth has always undergone periods of colder and you-know-what. I'm sure emissions will have an impact this go around, but, give me a break.
But what I hate most about it is that name, Global You-Know-What. That second word, to me connotes considerable, or at least noticeable, weather. And we sure are not getting it around here along the Illinois-Wisconsin border near Lake Michigan.
Last winter, we were introduced to a new word, that hateful, worthless "Polar Vortex." All spring and summer have been considerably cooler. Then, this past week, it got so cold, we had to turn on the furnace and I had to bring in my most cold-susceptible outside plants like the caladiums.
Temps since Thursday have struggled to get over 50 degrees and nights dropped into the upper 30s.
I'm thinking we should now call it, perhaps, "Global, Not As ____ As You Might Think."
Oh, Well, Where's That Sweatshirt? --RoadDog
SAY WHAT? "Catch you on the flip side." Do they still make 45s?

One Mighty Cool Spring for a Global Warming
Overall, this has not been a great spring around northeast Illinois. And, that is after one REALLY, REALLY COLD WINTER. We actually had temps in the upper 70s over last weekend (and were of the opinion that the Round Lake Spring Carnival Jinx might, at long last, be over).
However, the rain storms came late Sunday afternoon and we haven't been over 60 degrees since. Even worse, we've had some huge rain storms and it is raining right now with high predicted at 55 degrees. Tomorrow 52 degrees.
Perhaps we need to come up with a new, more appropriate name for this ballyhooed Global Warming. Maybe something along the lines of GW, Much Colder Than You'd Think.
