Record Store Day Booty

This past Saturday was Record Store Day across the nation.  Mom and Pop Record Stores are one of the few places I feel like I'm home anymore.  In other words, I understand most anything in it.

As such, I visited my favorite Mom and Pop Record Store, The Vinyl Frontier, in McHenry, Illinois.  There were quite a few others also paying respects and buying albums and CDs.

I bought ten CDs and three albums.

ALBUMS:

The Best of Herman's Hermits Volume 2

The Box Tops: The Letter / Neon Rainbow

Beau Brummels:  You Tell Me Why / Don't Talk to Strangers

53rd Anniversary of "Rubber Soul" Release: My Memories

Bob Stroud is doing a Root Salute to this album on his Rock an Roll Roots show on Chicago's WDRV 97.1 FM as this album was released 53 years ago tomorrow.  This album and the one before it "Revolver," marked a major change  in Beatles music from their earlier work.

I remember back before Christmas 1965, I was about to buy my first album ever and was in the record store looking at albums and this was one I was looking at.  It ended up being a choice between this album or Herman's Hermits Greatest Hits.  I did a lot of thinking before going with Herman because this one had a whole lot of hits.  (I later bought "Rubber Soul.")

Albums back then cost $2.99 which was a huge amount for me to spend.  That was essentially six weeks of allowance or 150 pop bottles.  (Two cents a bottle going door-to-door.)  I had to get max bang for my buck.

Little did I know that those two albums would lead to a life-long obsession collecting albums, 45s, cassette tapes, reel-to-reel tapes and CDs.

Earlier, Bob Stroud played "Rubber Soul's" "I'm Looking Through You."  A great song that whenever I write it down on paper, I always absolutely HAVE to put little dots for eyes in the "o'" in the word Look.

I'd sure like to do that right now.

22.  BON JOVI Cross Road--  (4,951,000)  1994, #158

23.  2 PAC--  (4,848,000),  #165

27.  ERIC CLAPTON, Time Pieces--  (4,520,000) 1982, #200

Of interest, of these artists, 19 did not have another Top Ten Hit after the release of their greatest hits album.  So, it can be said that when you release your greatest hits album, that is pretty much the end of your hit-making career.

More interesting stuff:  These artists with other albums in the Top 200:  Madonna, 15; Aerosmith, 6; Eagles, 5; and Eric Clapton with 2.

The Charts Back in 2012-- Part 1

September 14, 2012, Chart Watch by Paul Green.

The Beatles greatest hits album, #1s, from 2000, charged back into the Top Five in sales because of its digital release.  As of 2012, it had sold a total of 11,821,000 copies in the United States

Nielsen Sound Scan's running list of all-time best-selling albums of all time has 27 greatest hits packages which is no surprise because of more bang for your buck.  I especially like them and the collection hits albums like the old K-Tel ones.

There are only two in the top 200 by solo female artists, Celine Dion and Madonna.

Jimmy Buffett had only one Pop Top Ten, 1977's "Margaritaville."  But his "greatest hits album "Songs You Know By Heart is in the Top Ten.

Three of the Top 200s were released in 1976:  Creedence Clearwater Revival's Chronicles, Eagles Greatest Hits 1971-1975 and James Taylor's Greatest Hits.
