Happy Birthday Route 66, U.S. 12, U.S. 14, and Most All U.S. Highways
Yesterday, November 11th, was the birthday of the United States Highway system, the one that replaced the previous mosh of named and confusing roads like the Lincoln and Dixie highways. They became official on that date in 1926.

Dedication of Vietnam Memorial Today in McHenry, Illinois
In just a little over an hour, I will be going to McHenry, Illinois, so I can be at the dedication of the Vietnam Memorial at Veterans Park. i usually go to the ceremony at the train station in Fox Lake, but the Vietnam War was my generation's war, so it means even more to me.
This is a project by the McHenry High School Class of 1964, to honor three of its classmates who were killed over there. It also honors another one from the Class of 1967, who also died.
Sadly, it is on a cold and nasty day outside, but these veterans had to overcome all sorts of weather -related hardships, so that is another way to honor their memory.
I will be writing about it tomorrow.

Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald
November 10, 1975, the freighter SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in a horrific storm on Lake Superior, one of the last Great Lakes disasters.
Of course, there is the song "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot which came out in 1976 and went to Number 1. Hopefully WDRV will play that song today as they are in the letter "W" and are just playing "Wouldn't It Be Nice" by the Beach Boys.
My students used to hear the song and take it apart to find out all the history they could. This eventually evolved into a four day unit on the Great Lakes.
(They did play it, but Bobby Skafish, the DJ, didn't know it (nor did I until Liz reminded me). He said that two people had notified him on his Facebook page of the importance of playing that song on this day.)

Scottish bass player and vocalist who played in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and Manfred Mann (played on "Pretty Flamingo" (#29, 1966). He was invited to join Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton in Cream and wrote many of their songs.
That's him you hear sinking "Sunshine of Your Love" (#5, 1968) and "White Room" (6, 1968).
The group broke up after three years and he started the West, Bruce and Laing Band with Leslie West and Corky Laing. Later he toured with Ringo Starr's All-Star Band.
I was a huge Cream fan and bought everyone of their albums as they were released. My cousin Joe in North Carolina was the first person to let me know about them.

Marine Corps Birthday
I'm getting ready to leave to go to the annual Marine Corps Birthday Breakfast at the Fox Lake, Illinois, American Legion, something I've done for the last eight years since they transferred it to the home post.
It is also the kickoff for the 2014 Toys for Tots program.
Lots of scrambled eggs, harsh black coffee and SOS.
This year I may also help out my Sons of the American Legion group who is handling the cooking chores.
The USMC was established on November 10, 1775.
