Music Deaths: Two R&B Greats-- Billy and Percy

The R&B, Soul and Beach Music genres especially miss these two.

BILLY BUTLER, 69  Died March 31, 2015

The much-lesser-known younger brother of Chicago's Jerry Butler.  Formed his group Billy Butler & the Chanters and had one hit with go to #60 on the pop charts in 1965, "I Can't Work No Longer."  Co-wrote Jerry Butler's "I Stand Accused."

His music is still popular in Beach Music and Northern Soul.

PERCY SLEDGE, 74  Died April 14, 2015  He was a part-time singer and hospital orderly before hitting it big.  And, boy did he hit it big.  His first song, "When a Man Loves a Woman," went to #1 in 1966.  This was always a much requested wedding song although it really wasn't a good wedding song.  But it was always a good one to get people out on the floor dancing slow.

His next two songs cracked the Top Twenty "Warm and Tender Love (#17-1966) and "It Tears Me Up" (#20-1966).

He  did  not return to the Top Twenty again until 1968's "Take Time To Know Her" went to #11.
