9.  Tug of War  (Especially the tug of war across the Mississippi River between Illinois and Iowa.)

3.  Equestrian Dressage  (Dressing up horses and riders.)

Songs of 1970-- Part 3: Singers & Songwriters-- James Taylor

"FIRE AND RAIN"  James Taylor

It didn't just make James Taylor a star, this song kick-started a whole singer-songwriter movement. By the next year, pop music was dominated by solo stars who both wrote and sang their own tunes, including Carole King, Carly Simon and Cat Stevens.

Taylor's song, which cracked the Top 5, contrasted sad lyrics -- inspired by his stay in a mental institution -- with the warmest possible vocal delivery.

Carole King later said her hit "You've Got a Friend" was her answer to Taylor's lyric, "I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend."

And, that's Carole King playing piano on "Fire and Rain."

Music Deaths: Mike Mitchell of the Kingsmen. Played on 'Louie, Louie'

MIKE MITCHELL, 77

Died 16 April 2021

Guitarist and founding member of the Kinsmen who had the hit "Louie, Louie" in 1963.

Lead guitarist.  The band came together in 1959 and were already good friends.  Supposedly obscene lyrics made the appeal of "Louie, Louie" even better.  Regardless, one of the great garage/frat rock groups of all time.

Passed away on his birthday.

Songs of 1970-- Part 2: Breaking Up and Arriving on Stage

"Given so much unrest, everyone was exhausted," says author David Browne.  "It is no coincidence that the top songs of then year were as much hymns as pop songs."

But, if such anthems brought people together, the bands that created them were, at the time, falling apart.  Both Simon & Garfunkel and the Beatles broke up in 1970, as did Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Meanwhile, great new musicians and groups rose to take their place, including Elton John, the Jackson Five, the Carpenters and James Taylor, all of whom released breakthrough songs that same year.

Whole new genres emerged as well, making 1970 a unique year that will live forever in musical history and in our memories.

Of course, 1970, was a college year for me, so these songs really strike up the old memories.  I pledge Delta Sigma Phi at NIU and moved out to the frat house in the fall after living freshman year at Lincoln Hall dormitory freshman year.  That spring was also the Kent State Riots when I really thought I was seeing the end of the United States.  Those were some scary times, I tell you.

I was looking out my dorm window when the rioting came to DeKalb and NIU as a confrontation between students and police took place right below me.  With all the police lights flashing, the campus radio station, WNIU played "Lay Down (Candles in the Wind)" by Melanie and any time I hear that song anymore it takes me right back.

Every Blooming THing, Mid-May 2021

The yard continues to bloom.  My goal is always to have something blooming from mid-March to November.  And, I do pretty well at it even if I do say so.

Right now, the ajuga is blooming blue and purple pink all over the yard, including some areas in the yard.  The daisies are just about to break out in white bloom (also in spots in the yard as well).   And, I have at least a hundred if not more with all of these perennials.

In addition, the tall wild purple phlox are blooming all over and I still have purple, white and red creeping phlox blooming.

The iris are blooming and/or preparing to bloom.  The azaleas are mighty, mighty red.

I also have the yellow perennials with gray foliage and another mounding plant with little pink flowers blooming.  But, I do not know what these last two are called.

It is a colorful yard, indeed.

Oh yes, the Miss Kim lilacs are getting ready to bloom (regular lilacs are past).  Plus, my two sunrise honeylocust trees in the front yard are about to burst into their golden leaves.

Pretty Yard.  --RoadThumb

The Songs of 1970-- Part 1: 'Bridge Over Troubled Water'

Of course, any song from 1970 is going to be real special to me.  I find that the songs from when I was in junior high, high school and college are my favorites for some reason.  1970 was a college year for me at NIU.

From the August 2, 2020 Parade Magazine "The songs of 1970" by Jim Farber.

You can learn a lot about any given year by listening to its most popular songs.  In 1970, the No. 1-selling single was Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," an ode to everlasting hope and unwavering faith.  (That song always reminds me of NIU's Tune Room (also called Tomb Room) at the University Center.  If I heard it once there, I heard it lots.  Make sure you listen to Aretha Franklin's version which came out a year later.)

Nearly as popular were the Beatles' "Let It Be,"  "O-o-h Child" by the Five Stairsteps and B.J. Thomas' "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head."  All of these are meant to soothe and uplift.

These singles, and I'm sure you remember everyone of them, wound up defining life in 1970, a turbulent year in American history and beyond.  "It was a time of the Vietnam War, riots in the cities and [following] the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy," says Keni Burke, who crooned the Five Stairsteps' calming anthem "O-o-h Child," which assured us that "things are gonna get easier."

About That Almost Perfect Game I Saw Back in '83-- Part 5: Blew My Top

Sad to say, but, BUT, this would have only been the ninth perfect game in Major League Baseball.  That is pretty impressive after all those years and all those games.  But NO, I didn't get to see a perfect game.  I would have been more than happy to "settle" for a no-hitter.  But, alas, poor me, I didn't even get that.  I only has a one-hitter.

BECAUSE, the next guy up grounded out to first base.

End of game.

And, the Sox ended up losing 6-0 anyway.

Now, I've seen a lot of White Sox games in my time and definitely have seen them lose a lot of times.  One more loss, no big deal.  But, this one hurt.

I was furious.  I was angry.  I was mad.

But, when Jerry Hairston hit that single, two White Sox fans behind me jumped up and started high-fiving and cheering and what-not.  I saw red, jumped turn around and started jawing loudly and unpleasantly with them.  They looked shocked.

"I'm yelling, "You idiots, you fools.  Don't you know what just happened?"

"Yeah!" they replied.  "The White Sox got a hit."

"Did you know there have only been a few perfect games in the history of MLB and you were about to see one?" I yelled.

Thankfully they shut up and sat down because if they had continued I think I would have gotten into my  first-ever fight at a baseball game.

To read the whole story, go to labels and click on perfect game.

About That Almost Perfect Game I Saw Back in '83-- Part 5: Bottom of the 9th, Two Outs, Then....

Here we go, bottom of the ninth inning now, just three outs to go to you-know-what.  I am now a HUGE Milt Wilcox fan.  I could almost taste seeing the eighth perfect game in MLB history.  And I was going to BE THERE!!  Oh boy.  Come on Milt,

Did I say, THREE Outs?

First up for my White Sox was  Carlton Fisk who flew out.  White Sox manager Tony LaRussa (who is now back with the Sox as manager) then put in a pinch hitter, Mike Squires, who grounded out to first.

ONE OUT TO GO!!!

Then, LaRussa puts in his wildcard, Jerry Hairston.  Jerry Hairston was a pinch hitter's pinch hitter.  This made up a huge part of his career.

Wilcox threw a waist-high fast ball and Hairston did what he got paid for and slashed a ball that landed  a few feet in front of Chet Lemon in center field.

You probably could feel the disappointment in Detroit, but it was definitely that way with most all of Comiskey Park.

All, that is, except for two White Sox fan clowns sitting behind me.

And, Then....  --RoadCry

Every Blooming THing, Early May 2021

After a two week delay, I finally got my lawn tractor and had a real fun time cutting down the yard jungle I had developed in the meantime.  I always try to stay ahead of the grass especially in the spring when it is growing fast.  I had to cut it much higher than I usually do.

Sadly, one of my crabapple trees had just come into a heavy bloom but then the extreme winds we had this past weekend hit and blew every single bud off.  However, the other four crabapples are blooming right now as is the sole remaining Bradford pear tree.  The two sunburst honey locusts are about to leaf out in that glorious yellow.  The redbud is also blooming.

The daffodils and hyacinths are spent, but the tulips are ablaze right now.

The purple, red and white creeping phlox are carrying the flower color right now along with a perennial I have that has gray foliage and yellow flowers (but I don't know what it is called).

Hostas are coming up.
