Da Bears at Da House-- Part 1

As in White House.

From the October 5th Chicago Tribune "This trip long overdue for '85 team" by Peter Nicholas.

I'm sure looking forward to seeing some of this tonight. Another chance to see our all-time favorite Bears team get together again to relive that magical year.

Everyone remembers that really frigid January day when the Bears had their parade in Chicago after winning Super Bowl XX the previous Sunday. A visit to DC to say hi to President Reagan was in the offing but never came to pass, because they day after the parade came the Challenger explosion.

Reagan never met "The Fridge." The visit was never rescheduled, "nor, did they reprise 'The Super Bowl Shuffle.' the rap tune that became a pop culture sensation. Players got hurt or retired (I still say that Da Bears would have won one or two more Super Bowls had qb McMahon stayed healthy). Coaches moved on. Hopes faded for of a Bears dynasty, or even another championship."

Gary Fencik, a free-safety for the team, remembers watching the shuttle explosion at his locker in Hallas Hall, "I saw the takeoff and saw the accident and pretty much realized at that point that our celebration was over." Fencik is now a partner in a private equity firm.
