Joe South-- Part 3: Hits for Billy Joe Royal and "Rose Garden"

Continued from March 13.

He also played electric guitar on Simon & Garfunkel's second album "Sounds of Silence."  Billy  Joe Royal did well with five songs Joe South wrote:  "Down In the Boondocks,"   "I Knew You When,"  "Yo-Yo" (later a hit for the Osmonds), "Hush" (later a hit for Deep Purple).

The biggest hit of his songwriting career was "Rose Garden"  (#3-1971) by Lynn Anderson.  It was a hit in 16 countries and two Grammy Awards.  He also wrote three other songs for her that went to #1 on the country charts.

He also has written songs for a huge array of artists.

Quite a remarkable career.
