Every Bloomin' Thing: Early April 2011

I almost forgot to mention that today, when I went out to feed the little birdies, that I found a clump of daffodils blooming. SPRING IS HERE!! This clump is by the furnace exhaust so stays a little bit warmer along with a southern exposure.

Daffodills, the true smell of spring!!

This is an even I look forward to every spring, the first flowers. There are a lot of other daffodils getting ready to bloom as well. Tulips and hyacinths are also pushing through.

The February 13th Chicago Tribune Sunday section had an article about growing native plants in shade gardens. They said the won't bloom as profusely as full sun ones, but you will get some. They suggested native plants like New England aster, shooting star, purple coneflower, wild geranium, foxglove beard, black-eyed susan, blue-stemmed goldenrod and common spiderwort.

I have a lot of black-eyed susans and purple coneflowers growing in my arboretum and they do well back there, even though they only get sun in the morning and late afternoon.
