Sittin' FP and Enjoying It

This morning I enjoyed my coffee sittin' FP, front porch.  And, i was comfortable with temps in the 60s.  Who'd have thought we'd have three straight days of unseasonably warm temperatures this late in the year.

I enjoyed the fall colors.  Some of the trees are bare, but my weeping cherry and sunburst honeylocust are both covered in brilliant gold.  The dying hostas also are a deep yellow.  I have several different colors of mums blooming (mostly yellow) and the burning bushes are turning a bright red.

By the way, Bob Stroud will be doing 1980 on his Ten at Ten rebroadcast at 10 p.m. tonight.  Tomorrow, he does the year 1968 and Friday he does "Time" because of the fall back of daylight savings time this weekend.  Both will be broadcast at 10 a.m. and then again at 10 p.m..

What's to This Daylight Savings Time?-- Part 2: Not Me

Benjamin Franklin was being sarcastic, of course  (Oh that's why it was confusing).

During World War I, the United States enacted the Standard Time Act which officially established time zones and incorporated daylight saving months into federal law.  The idea was that if daylight hours were coordinated with natural light, fewer tasks would have to be completed at night and with the need for electric light.

Daylight Saving Time ended with the war but was brought back during World War II when it was again brought back as a conservation measure.

After the war, states were allowed to do their own measurement of time, causing much confusion.  In 1966, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act which established norms, but allowed states to withdraw.  In 1973 President Nixon made daylight saving time go year-round to deal with the rising price of oil.

For many people, this time change takes place automatically on smartphones, computers and tablets "that have become the real timekeepers instead of watches and clocks."

What's To This Daylight Savings Time? --Part 1

From the March 8, 2015, Chicago Tribune "Frankly, there's more to daylight saving time than loss of sleep" by Michael Muskal.

Personally, I really like daylight saving time and would like it just to go on year-round.  But, as I get older, that loss of an hour, gaining of an hour doesn't help my sleep patters.

Daylight saving time returned at 2 a.m. Sunday when the time magically jumped ahead an hour.  Some folks believe that we are actually adding daylight hours.  "What is changing is how society organizes itself to take advantage of sunlight."

Benjamin Franklin usually receives credit (or blame) as a way to save money on candles  From Paris, he wrote in 1794: "If I had not been awakened so early in the morning I should have slept six hours longer by the light of the sun, and in exchange have lived six  hours the following night by candlelight; the latter being a much more expensive light than the former."  (I'm not exactly sure what this has to do with it.)
