Two Legions, a PLAV, 1972 and Two Bands

SATURDAY, AUGUST 6

Liz and I went to the Fox Lake Legion in the afternoon and saw the excellent 3 Aces Band play from 3 to 6.  Always love entertainment in a Sunday afternoon, especially with $2 drafts.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 7

Bob Stroud played his third installment of his annual Ode to Summer fifty years ago (1972) and I recorded on cassette tapes.  These were the songs on the radio and in our record collections and the first three songs:  "Join Together" by the Who, "Immigration Man" by Crosby & Nash and "Back Stabbers" by the O'Jays.

We went over to McHenry for the Polish Legion of American Veterans (PLAC) street party.  It was all you can drink and eat for $15 as well as a band.  I sure got my money's worth.  I know a lot of people at the PLAV and there were a lot of McHenry American Legion members there as well (many hold dual memberships).

Afterwards, went to the McHenry Legion.

Summer of 1972 Again-- Part 10: 'Guitar Man'

This past Sunday, Bob Stroud had his fourth and final installment of his annual "Summer of" series on summers of fifty years ago.  That would make it the songs on our radios and in our record collections on September 4, 1972.

I was back in DeKalb, Illinois, getting ready to finish up my senior year at Northern Illinois University.  As much as I was having a really good time in college, I knew it was time to move on with my life.

A Celebration of Life, Summer of '72 and a Legion

SATURDAY, JULY 9

We went to Donovan's Reef in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, for the Celebration of Mike Barnhorst's Life.  A very appropriate place to hold it since he spent most all of his most recent years there living in a room in the motel.

He was well-known and well-liked by all and always personally greeted everyone who came in.  He was just called "Mikey."

His family has all sorts of quirky people in it.

SUNDAY, JULY 10

Did some planting and yardwork.  Recorded Bob Stroud's second Roots Salute to Summer 1972, fifty years ago.  He has four parts to summers fifty years ago where he plays the songs on our radios and in our record collections from that date.  I was going to summer school at the University of Georgia to get some classes I needed before transferring back to Northern Illinois University to finish my college career.

The first three songs he played were "Long Cool Woman" by the Hollies, "Hello Mary Lou" by CCR and "Brandy" by Looking Glass.  I listed all the songs he played in my Down Da Road I Go July blog.

We went to the American Legion in McHenry and I enjoyed their $2 every day rail drink special and Liz had the Hamm's beer Tall Boys for $2.

On July 10, Bob Stroud played his part 2 of his annual trip back to summer.   This was our secong trip back to the Summer of 1972, the first was on June 12.  He will be doing this two more times on  August14 and September 10.

BEAUTIFUL SUNDAY--  DANIEL BOONE--  Yeah, I know what you're thinking, "What's next, Davy Crockett?"  This Daniel Boone is allegedly a distant relative of the more famous Daniel Boone.  His one and only hit making him a classic one-hit-wonder.  (This song always reminds me of tooling around Athens, Georgia, in my Ramblin' Wreck.)

AMERICA--  YES--  New 45, kind of a strange release of the old Simon and Garfunkel chestnut.  This is the single edit that WCFL was all over 40 Labor Day weekends ago.  It was out just two weeks before the new Yes album was scheduled to arrive titled Close to the Edge.  It wasn't included in the album and the full length version was only ever available on an Atlantic Records sampler entitles The New Age of Atlantic.

LISTEN TO THE MUSIC--  DOOBIE BROTHERS--  An album that wasn't getting much radio play only a couple weeks ago by a group from San Jose, California, because their first album was pretty much a bust, but it wouldn't be too much longer before radio began to play the band's first hit, the one that would break them out.  The album, Toulouse Street.

Where Were You September 2, 1972?-- Part 1

Bob Stroud finished up his annual trek back to Summer, 40 years ago this past Sunday.  That would be Labor Day weekend 1972.  He does the show over four parts, the first Sunday of each month starting with June.  To see all the songs, go to the Summer 1972 label below.

I was already back to Dekalb, Illinois, and getting ready to start my senior year which would be all education classes at Northern Illinois University.  I was driving the Ramblin' Wreck, the '63 puke green Rambler station wagon my parents had bought me.  The name was very fitting, even if it wasn't from Tech, well, it was from Georgia.

ALONE AGAIN (NATURALLY)--  GILBERT O'SULLIVAN--  When we last left you a month ago, it was the #1 song.  It had just been knocked off its spot.  (It will be the last song played in the show.)
HONKY CAT--  ELTON JOHN--  Debuting on local (Chicago) charts after "Rocket Man" had fallen off.  Off the very successful Honky Chateau album.  (I remember driving the Ramblin' Wreck to Northern back in the spring to see Elton John play a concert.)

ROCK ME ON THE WATER--  JACKSON BROWNE--  New single from Saturate Before Using.
BLACK AND WHITE--  THREE DOG NIGHT--  On its way to the top of the charts

I Even Set the Alarm to Make Sure I Got Up By 7 AM in Time to Hear It.  Being retired, I Don't Usually Set That Alarm (I Still Remember How, Though).

In just a few minutes, Wendy Rice on Chicago's WXRT, 93.1 FM, takes us back to 1967 on her Saturday Morning Flashback Show at www.wxrt.com.  Not only do you get the music, but also lots of tidbits  and bews from the year.  It goes from 8 to noon, CST.  She just kicked off with the Beatles' "Magical Mystery Tour."

Taking you way back, back 40 years ago.  These were the songs playing on your radio here in the Chicagoland area, though, I was in Georgia and going to summer school at UGA back then.

TAKE IT EASY--  EAGLES--  A lot of this summer was about the greatnew artists we were discovering, not the least of which were the Eagles.  Their first single release.  (And Liz and my unofficial Route 66 song.  When You're "Standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona," you're standing by Route 66, the Mother Road."
