Sure Won't Be Watching the Emmys Tonight

Essentially the same reason I don't watch the Oscars or the Grammys.  I have no one to pull for because I haven't seen hardly anything nominated.  Just takes the fun out of it.

I mostly watch network TV.  And the Emmy people don't like the networks.

There is absolutely no drama that I watch nominated nor even any people in them.

Comedy is just barely better with just one sitcom, "black-ish" nominated as well as Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross, "black*ish" 's actor and actress for best as well as Allison Jamey for "Mom" best actress.

I'm Not Even Going to Watch the Academy Awards Tonight

And, there is a clear reason for it.  I haven't seen any new movies since February 2020.  And, there is a reason for that, too.  Enough said.

Normally, I will have seen at least five or six of the movies nominated as well as the other Oscars.  It makes it more fun when you can cheer for "your" movie.  Not so much fun if you don't have "your" movie to cheer for.

However, even without you-know-what, it is getting more difficult to see the movies these days.  

My biggest problems are movies that are only shown on streaming services like Netflix and others and the fact that so many nominated movies were just limited release.  It's difficult to see a movie if it is only out for a week or less.

Thankfully, my two local theater chains, Classic Cinemas and Regal Cinemas are nice enough to show many nominees in the month leading up to the Academy Awards Show so I di get the chance to see them.  And, I pretty much always agree with the people who pick the finalists.  Those shows nominated are very good movies.

So, I am not going to watch the awards tonight.

These Movies Moved Me

Well, maybe I didn't see four of the movies nominated for Best Picture, but, in my opinion, I have seen two movies that SHOULD have been nominated but weren't.

They were "Just Mercy" and "The Last Full Measure."

"Just Mercy" was about a man's unjust conviction for a horrible murder in Alabama.  "The  Last Full measure" was about the effort to secure  the Medal of Honor for a Vietnam Air Force pararescueman.

These movies really moved me.  I see many movies and am almost always entertained, but it is the rare one that moves me.

About the Academy Awards: Just Couldn't Handle Those Subtitles

Well,I decided to go ahead and watch the Academy Awards show on Sunday, despite the fact I hadn't seen four of the movies nominated for Best Picture, nor but 2 of 5 Best Directors. one Best Actor, one Best Actress, none of the Best Supporting Actors and 3 of 5 Best Supporting Actress and just one of the five Best Animated Features.

I did not see Best Picture nominees:

The Irishman
Marriage Story
Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood
Parasite.

I wish I had seen "Parasite" as this foreign film did very well, winning Best Picture, Best Director and a whole bunch of others.  I think if they had had best Actors and Actresses as well as supporting ones, they would have won those as well.

And, I had an opportunity to see it this past week at my local theater, but decided against it as it was all subtitled and even a real little bit of those subtitles goes a long way with me.

But generally, I find that all the films nominated for Best Picture are good ones.

Congrats to "Parasite."  Maybe I'll get A  Chance to See It Some Time.  --RoadSite

I've Seen Just One Best Actor Nominee and No Best Actresses

This happens every Academy Awards show to me.  When the nominees are announced, I haven't seen many in any category.  This is usually because the movies weren't shown at my local theaters or were out for just a very short time.

As I said in a previous post, I only saw two of the Best Picture nominees:  "Ford v. Ferrari" and "Joker."

The only Best Actor nominee I saw was Joaquin Phoenix for "Joker."

Well, It's Oscar Time Again, and, As Usual I Haven't Seen Many Nominees

From the January 14, 2020, Chicago Sun-Times "Nominees in Top Categories."

Now, I know I only saw 38 movies at the theaters last year (and four so far this year) and that is considerably less than the 52 or more I usually see.  But, come on, I only saw TWO of the movies nominated for Best Picture.  And, there were nine movies nominated.

You'd think with 38 movies seen I might have seen more than two?

I only saw "Ford v. Ferrari" and "Joker."

As Usual, I Picked Awards Poorly

Well, at least I did get to see every movie nominated for Best Picture.

BEST PICTURE--  I picked "Dunkirk."  Winner "The Shape of Water."

BEST DIRECTOR--  I picked Christopher Nolan for "Dunkirk.  Winner Guillermo del Toro "The Shape of Water.

BEST ACTOR--  I actually picked the winner.  Who's a thought?  Gary Oldman for "Darkest Hour."

BEST ACTRESS--  Actually picked right here as well.  Frances McDormand for "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Mo."

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR--  I picked Woody Harrelson in "Three Billboards."  Winner was Sam Rockwell in "Three Billboards."  Close on this one, though.

VEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS--  Here I picked Laurie Metcalf in "Lady Bird."  Winner Allsion Janney in "I, Tonya."
