JSS: Vacations Sure Go Fast-- Gas Gouge-- Flooding

JSS--  Just Some Stuff

1.  VACATIONS SURE GO FAST--  We just got back from a sixteen day vacation to Panama City Beach in Florida.  It was two, well three, days down and two days back.  We were there by Feb. 2 and I was thinking, "Wow, we have eleven more days to go."  Then, suddenly it was time to leave.  Wouldn't it be nice if vacations lasted longer.

Well, for that matter,  every day goes real fast when you're retired.  Hey, we're almost through two months of this new year.  Didn't it just begin?

2.  GAS GOUGE--  Our local Fox Lake, Illinois, gas stations pulled their monthly gas gouge earlier this week.  Monday, I filled up one car for $2.30.  Tuesday that  station had gas for $2.60.  Because they can.

3.  FLOODING--  Since we got home northern Illinois has sure entered the monsoon season.  It has rained and rained.  Thankfully, though, it was rain and not snow.  Had it been snow we would have had at least 16-22 inches.  The warm weather melted around eight inches of snow already on the ground and then all that rain as well as frozen lakes and rivers and all that rain, there was no where for the water to go so we had a lot of flooding, but nothing too serious.

Kicking Off Our Summer 2017-- Part 1: The Band At Captain's

Well, we regarded the summer as not "officially"  here until we get out to Captain's Quarters in Antioch on Fox Lake and we finally got there this past Saturday.  R Gang was playing outside on the deck from 7 to 11 p.m..

Now, if I can just get our boat in the water for our 33rd year of boating, we'll be seriously into the season.  Between the rainy and cool May weather and being gone for so many days the last two weeks, the boat has been sitting in the driveway since April 29.

Of course, with all the things going on around here June to September, why go anywhere else for vacation.

Actually, Summer 2017 would have kicked off two weeks ago, but I was at the Indy 500 from May 25-29 and June 2-7, we were along the Mississippi River in Clinton, Iowa, Dubuque, Iowa, and Galena, Illinois, so we haven't really been around here much.

Listening to the WLS Songs from July 9, 1965

As I mentioned, when I do the Top 40, there are always some songs I either never heard or had forgotten.  This calls for a very careful listen to You Tube (I don't want to end up spending several hours in those oldies.  That mean old "You might like to hear" off to the side gets me way too often.).

I also used my Joel Whitburn's Top Pop Singles 1955-1993 book to see what the top national rank was.

40.  DOWN IN THE BOONDOCKS--  Billy Joe Royal.  OK, I heard this one, but it is a song that always reminds me of the trip my parents gave me for graduating 8th grade back in 1965.  I was big into fishing and they paid for me to go on a fishing trip in Canada.  This song played over and over on the way there and back and has become hooked in my memory to it.

It was playing in the diner where I bought my first meal by myself.  The trip was either in July or early August.  The other song that brings back memories of that trip was the one used in the movie "Groundhog Day," "Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe."  I see that hit #1 in Chicago on WLS on August 13, 1965, the first song to knock the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" from #1 where it had been since July 9th.

Anyway, "Down in the Boondocks" brought back the memories and hit #9 nationally.  This was its first appearance on the WLS charts.
