Co-founder of Strawberry Alarm Clock  "Incense & Peppermints"  (#1-1967) and guitarist and bassist with Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Co-write "Sweet Home Alabama"  (#8-1974)

With Lynyrd Skynyrd 1972 to 1975 and 1987 to 1996 when he left the band with heart trouble.  Became member of Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 2006.

Music Deaths: Gregg Allman: Allman Brothers Band

GREGG ALLMAN, 69

Died May 27, 2017.

Born in Nashville.  Raised Daytona Beach, Florida.  He and brother Duane Allman formed a group originally called Allman Joys and later Hour Glass.  In 1969 they signed with Capricorn Records as the Allman Brothers Band.

Their live recording at Fillmore East is what their name out there.  Duane was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1971 and Gregg continued on.

They were extremely popular, but never had many top 40s.  Their biggest hit was "Ramblin' Man" (#2-1973), another great traveling song.  I also really liked their "One Way Out" #86-1972)  Gregg's biggest solo hit was also one of my favorites "I'm No Angel"  (#49-1987).  It always makes me remember Las Vegas.

He sure had that great gravelly voice perfect for Southern Rock and Blues.

I am a big fan.  Ya Gotta Love That Country Rock.

Unluckiest Band Still Around 35 Years Later: Lynyrd Skynyrd

"Y" Music "35 Years After Definitive Tragedy" by Wendy Geller.

The October 20, 1977, Lynyrd Skynyrd was on a headliner tour for their sixth album when their plane crashed near Gillsburg, Mississippi.  Three of the members died and others were injured.  The group's drummer staggered for help and was allegedly shot by a local farmer.

The record company scrambled to replace the new album cover which showed the group engulfed in flames.

The group, known for their hard partying offstage has had many other bad things happen to them.  Even so, they play on, even with just one original member.  I was glad to see they changed their mind about displaying the Confederate flag on stage.  It was so much a part of their "'tude."

This Side of Twang

Definitely count me in as a fan of what is classified as Southern Rock. Just something about those "Wild-Eyed Southern Boys." And, of course, their completely politically incorrect display of Confederate flags. We're still waiting for a Southern Rock band to make it on the R&B charts.

Anyway, today, Bob Stroud featured Southern fried Rock on his daily Ten at Ten to be repeated at Ten pm tonight. WDRV FM 97.1.
