Good Times Last Week: Cuda's Fish Fry, 80s A to Z ibn Chicago's Drive, Legion Party and Margaritaville

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 3

We met Kevin, Kelly, Glenn and Barb at Cuda's on Grasslake Road for their beer-battered fish fry.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 4

Since Friday afternoon I have been recording segments of the Drive's (WDRV, 97.1 FM Chicago) 80s A to Z, which they will be doing all this weekend and all of next weekend.  The 80s are one of my favorite decades for music and I was listening to a lot of it for my deejay business.

I am recording the segments on cassette tapes and will rerecord them on cassettes with the idea of listening to them when I'm out in the 1985 Firebird.  Which, by the way, still has a cassette deck.

Met Glenn and Barb at the Fox Lake American Legion at 3 pm where they had one of our favorite performers, Joe Kadlec entertaining.

Where else you gonna go in the afternoon for music and beers.

Came home and enjoyed Margaritaville and the Ultimate Jukebox (300 CDs) in the basement while watching the Sox and Georgia games on TV.

Bob Stroud Reflects on 20 Years at Chicago's WDRV, the Drive

This past Monday, Chicago's Classic Rock station, WDRV, 97.1 FM (simulcast's on 96.9 FM), better known as the Drive, celebrated its 20th anniversary with the same kind of music, something quite rare these days.  I believe Bob has found a "Forever Home" after bouncing around a long time, especially in Chicago.

He is the only one left of the first deejays and he talked about what it was like.  Some of the things he said:

**  The station's first year was 2001 and it was just getting down its chops when everything changed on 9/11 and the death of George Harrison.  That put a big change in what they were doing.

**  They have had some amazing birthday concerts every year.

**  He says the Drive's Listeners are the best in the world.  (Thanks, Bob.)

**  The Drive concentrates its music in the 60s and 70s mostly, but also plays some in the 1980s.

**  The very first song played on the station on March 15, 2001, was very fitting:  Alliotta, Haynes & Jeremiah's "Lake Shore Drive."

**  As they were developing the format, they teased listeners with all day shows with Broadway Music, Country Music and so forth.

I love this station, but would like to hear less Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin.  They play one of each about every hour.  I call WDRV the Station that Floyd and Zeppelin built.

At 10 am (and 10 pm) CST today, Bob Stroud will be doing his Ten at Ten on Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM, the Drive. on "Red, White & Blue" songs in honor of Veterans Day.

JSS--  Just Some Stuff

1.  "A CHRISTMAS STORY"--   My all-time favorite Christmas show starts in a few hours and runs a 24-hour marathon on both TNT and TBS.  I will watch it straight through at least twice and definitely will catch parts here and there.  Watch out for whose dogs?  We will be having out Christmas dinner at a Chinese buffet, a regular tradition, but no Chinese goose.

2.  THE DRIVE'S A TO Z--  It started at 6 am this morning and will run until sometime after New Years Day.  They do take a stop from midnight to 6 am.  There will be over 2,000 songs arranged alphabetically by title.  It streams at www.wdrv.com. 

First song was "Abacab" by Genisis.    They are up to "At the Station" by Joe Walsh right now.

3.  "THE LAST JEDI"--  The last two weekends, I have watched all the first seven "Star Wars" movies on TNT as I get ready to see the Rise of Skywalker after schools go back in session.  This Sunday they will run "Rogue One" at 1 pm, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" at 4 and "The Last Jedi" at 7.  I'll be recording on my VHS tape.

1.  SO TIRED OF CYBER MONDAY--  If I heard it or saw it once....  They just don't give it up.  By the way, I didn't order anything over the internet Monday or even leave the house on Friday.  Sorry guys, you lost that bit of your advertising dollar.

2.  NEW CHRISTMAS MOVIES--  I heard that Hallmark Channel has 40 new Christmas movies.  One of these days I might have to watch one of their Christmas movies.

3.  MY FAVORITE CHRISTMAS MOVIES--  I have added a fifth to my list of favorites.  It is "Scrooged."  Hey, Bill Murray.

4.  SNOW DIDN'T STICK--  It snowed over night on Monday, but did not stick on the driveway, sidewalks or street. I sure don't mind snow when I don't have to mess with it.

5.  THE DRIVE IN LIGHTS--  One of the three Chicago radio stations I listen to, WDRV, 97.1, 96.9 FM, the Drive, has a contest where the winner gets $1,000 if they have the best WDRV lights up in their yard.
