35.  I'VE GOT TO BE SOMEBODY--  Billy Joe Royal  His third release went to #38 on Billboard in early 1966.  Third straight Top 40 single.  Biggest hit, of course, was 1965's "Down in the Boondocks."

34.  UNDER YOUR SPELL--  Johnny Rivers  Billboard #35 in early 1966.  His version of a Buck Owens  song that went to #4 in 1959 on country charts.  Actual name "Under Your Spell Again."  I'd never heard it before.

33.  TELL ME WHY--  Elvis Presley     Slow, excruciatingly slow.  I'd never heard it before and hope to never hear it again.

32.  I AIN'T GONNA EAT MY HEART OUT ANYMORE--  Young Rascals   Blue-eyed soul group from New York City.  Their first hit and a good one.  Peaked at #52 on Billboard in early 1966.  Follow up was #1 "Good Lovin'"  Enjoyed the video of them in their school uniform outfits.

31.  PLEASE DON'T FIGHT IT--  Dino, Desi & Billy  Their third hit peaked at #60 on Billboard.  Of course, we know about the first two of their dads.  What about Billy?

WLS Top 40 Survey from December 24, 1965-- Part 1: "Gamma Goochee"

40.  THE DUCK--  Jackie Lee--  A regional dance hit that went to #14 Billboard.  It was the name of a dance.  His real name was Earl nelson and was half of Bob & Earl who had a #44 Billboard hit with "Harlem Shuffle."  Also sand lead on Hollywood Flames' "Buzz buzz Buzz #17 in 1958.

39.  GAMMA GOOCHEE--  Kingsmen  Were these the "Louie Louie" guys?  Probably.  A call and response song featuring strong drum beat.  "Are you gamma goochee?"  YouTube lists the song title as  "(You Got) Gamma Goochee."

38.  SATIN PILLOWS--  Bobby Vinton  Slow song.  Went to #23 on Billboard in January 1966.  Great music to fall asleep with, no pun intended.

37.  SANDY--  Ronnie & the Daytonas, actually Ronny. #27 on Billboard in 1966.  The "G.T.O." guys.  Nashville group specializing in hot rod songs.Slow and a great song.  Not so hot roddish at all.

36.  THE MEN IN MY LITTLE GIRL'S LIFE--  Mike Douglas  TV talk show host  Singer with Kay Kyser Orchestra 1945-1950.  Went to #6 on Billboard in early 1966.  His only hit.solo.  Daddy's little girl.

20.  FEVER--  McCoys   Follow up to "Hang On Sloopy."  #7.  Little Willie John had a hit with it in 1956 and Peggy Lee in 1958.  As good of garage rock as it gets.
19.  KISS AWAY--  Ronnie Dove   Went to #25 and arranged by Ray Stevens.  A tie-in with his biggest hit "One Kiss for Old Time's Sake."  Slow dancing to this one.
18.  I FOUND A GIRL--  Jan & Dean  Not one of their bigger hits, topping at just #30, but them at their best.

17.  ONE HAS MY NAME--  Berry Young   (The Other Has My Heart)  Sounds a lot like Dean martin  Went to #13 and his only hit.
16.  TAKE A HEART--  Sorrows   Reminds me of "Indian reservation."  Did not chart on Billboard  The Sorrows were a fixture on the English "Mod" scene.  Found out that Don Fardon was an original member who had a big hit with "Indian Reservation."

30.   SUNDAY AND ME--  Jay & the Americans  Jay Black with that great voice  real cool song.  #18 on Billboard.  This was Neil Diamond's first major hit as a songwriter.
29.  RESCUE ME--  Fontella Bass
28.  BOYS--  Beatles   Originally done by the Shirelles  Recorded at Abbey Road Studio on on Feb. 11, 1963.  This was the first time many fans had heard Ringo singing lead.

27.  TRY TO REMEMBER--  Brothers Four
26.  HANG ON SLOOPY--  Ramsey Lewis  New.  Went to #11.  Makes you want to to get up and yell "Yah, Yah, Yah!" and move around.
25.  SOMETHING ABOUT YOU--  Four Tops   New.  Oh that great Motown music.
24.  HEY BABY--  Emprees  (As in Five Emprees)  I've written about these Michigan lads before.Parts of it sounded like their biggest hit "Little Miss Sad."  Bruce Channel had taken this song to #1 in 1962.

23.  MAKE IT EASY--  Walker Brothers  (On Yourself)  Blue-eyed English sou.    Their first U.K. hit by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.  Jerry Butler went to #20 in 1962 and Dionne Warwick sang it in 1970.
22.  RUN BABY RUN-- Newbeats  ((Back in My Arms)  Went to #12, their second-biggest hit.  The blonde guy in the trio had that unique voice which I always thought was a girl singing.
21.  ENGLAND SWINGS--  Roger Miller  #3 U.S., #13 in U.K.

40.  UNIVERSAL COWARD--  Jan Berry (Of Jan & Dean)  A reply to "Universal Soldier."  An anti anti-war song.
39.  YESTERDAY--  Al De Lory.  Surprisingly, You Tube didn't have it.  In 1970, he did a version of "MASH's" "Suicide Is Painless."

36.  I GOT YOU--  James Brown
35.  WHERE DO YOU GO--  Cher--  #25 U.K. and #33 in U.S.  Not one of her better songs.

33.  MYSTIC EYES--  Them  Final of their three 1965 charters.  A real Blues Rave Up  The other two songs were "Gloria" and "Here Comes the Night."  Van Morrison out front singing.
32.  TEARS--  Ken Dodd   A slow song.  A British singer/comedian.  Had 19 hit singles in the U.K. from 1960-1981.
31.  CHILD OF OUR TIMES--  Barry McGuire  Follow up to "Eve of Destruction."  Reached #72 on Billboard.  In the same vein as his hit.
