This past weekend, I listened to Bob Stroud's Summer of '75 show on Sunday and Wendy Rice's Saturday Morning Flashback to 1969. That was a lot of going back for me.

SATURDAY MORNING FLASHBACK 1969
July 20th, a man walked on the moon. with song "Bad Moon Rising." Woodstock. A film that won the Oscar for best had an X-rating. Altamount, "Easy Rider," Chicago Cubs, of course.
GREEN RIVER-- Creedence Clearwater Revival The tune we always loved to play on St. Patrick's Day when they turn the Chicago River green.(My favorite group ever. My favorite album.)
BADGE-- Cream With their album Goodbye. Power trio with the brief history. George Harrison one of the co-writers on this tune.
GET TOGETHER-- Youngbloods Jesse Collin Young, kind of an anthem of the time.
MAMA TOLD ME NOT TO COME-- Randy Newman Long before he had any association with Disney or Pixar. Later on a hit song for Three Dog Night.
SHE CAME IN THROUGH THE BATHROOM WINDOW-- Joe Cocker Lost him just this last December, but in 1969 he had his breakthrough at a little music festival called Woodstock. His second album came out this year with his cover of a Beatles tune. Produced and arranged by his buddy Leon Russell. (Mr. Cover Song himself.)
INDIAN GIVER-- 1910 Fruitgum Company. Bubble Gum, hey it had a groove to it. (OK, I love my Bubblegum Music. And I don't care who knows.)
PEACHES IN REGALIA-- Frank Zappa From the Hot Rats album.

Deaths in 2013: Alvin Lee of Ten Years After
ALVIN LEE, 68. Died March 6, 2013.
British rock guitarist, lead singer and founder of ten Years After who made that memorable Woodstock appearance on the film. Founded the band in 1967 with a mix of blues, swing jazz and rock. Their two big hots were "I'm Going Home" (featured in the movie) and "I'd Love to Change the World."
He left the band in 1975 for a solo career and recorded with George Harrision, Steve Winwood and Mick Fleetwood.

Deaths: Woodstock and the Toucher
RICHIE HAVENS, 72
Died April 22nd. Noted guitarist and cover-song interpreter. First on stage at Woodstock and played extra long as other artists having trouble getting there. Played extra-long as well.
Who can forget that great song he sang "Freedom" shown in the movie, that robe and those tapping sandals.
Whenever I heard him afterward, I thought about this song.

"OK Campers, Rise and Shine"; It's Groundhog Day!!
"And don't forget your booties 'cause it's coooold out there today."
Famous words heard over and over in one of my favorite movies of all time, "Groundhog Day." Then, of course, came that song.
A guy by the name of Richard Henzel spoke it and he has attended some of the Woodstock, Illinois, Groundhog Festival the weekend before the actual day, February 2nd.
The festival has grown every year since it started with more attendees (but nowhere near the masses in the real Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania).
The film itself endures and seems to be even more popular today than when it was released.
Some recent honors:
2006: Premier Magazine selects it as one of the 50 greatest comedies of all-time
2007: Selected to be in the National Film Registry
2008: The American Film Institute (AFI) ranks it as the 8th Best Fantasy Film, not bad for a movie also considered to be a comedy.
Films are often shot on location, but few as much as this one was, plus the community was very involved as well, many of whom served as extras.
Rick Bellars was one. He was in the background during the Brinks robbery and his car can be seen in the falling out of the tree scene.

Less Than a Month to Groundhog Day!!
Twenty-eight days to be exact.
Last year, according to the St. Louis Today, PETA proposed using a robotic groundhog for the Pennsylvania Festival in Punxsutawney (and, I spelled it without looking it up). They believe it is unfair to keep a groundhog in captivity and subject him (or her) to bright lights and big crowds.
William Deeley, president of the Inner Circle of the the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club has said that Phil gets treated better than the average child in Pennsylvania and is inspected annually by the State Department of Agriculture.
Of course, there's the one out in Pennsylvania, but closer to the Midwest, we have our own one out in Woodstock, Illinois.

Pretty Good Weekend-- Part 5-- Barhopping Our Way Home
When we left the Fair Diddley, I remembered seeing a bar in Woodstock near Il-47 several times and wanting to check it out, only I wasn't absolutely sure where it was.
THE RED MILL
We found it easily, though and it turned out to be the Red Mill, dating back to 1934 by a cemetery near the new Fleet and Farm, but it was moved to its current site on Lake Street east of 47 in 1954. The current owners have had it for 13 years and both mother and son were there. Definitely a locals and motorcycle-type bar and a good crowd for a Sunday afternoon so we ended up sitting at a table.
Deals are $1 drafts on Mondays, $2 on Thursday and every day, a pitcher of beer and dozen wings for $9.95. We opted for the last one and they weren't the little B-Dub baby wings either. Mighty good eating.
THE GAMBLER
Then, we drove to the Gambler Bar in downtown McHenry on Green Street. Really big crowd cheering the Blackhawks on to their victory over San Jose and a party going on. Again, it was too crowded to sit at the bar, so ended up at a table, but each one has its own private TV.
Cheered the Hawks on while downing the $1 bottles of beer.
MULLIGAN'S
Last stop was at Mulligan's, north of McHenry on Il-31. They've been open for five years now in a little strip mall. The place was really crowded with a baggo tournament going on. You had to watch out for flying bean bags.
They had $5 pitchers and half price appetizers, so we got an order of ribs for $4. Those were some really great ribs.
Ran into buddy Kenny who plays NTN with us at Donovan's. He was there with some of his friends from the McHenry class of 1967 who he hadn't seen for years, but met via Facebook.

Pretty Good Weekend-- Part 4-- Fair Diddley
Sunday, May 16th, we drove over to Woodstock, Illinois, for their 42nd annual Fair Diddley at the Historic Woodstock Town Square. This was the first time we had ever been. Each year, they block off the square and have over 300 arts and crafts vendors selling their wares. So many people come to it that they even have off-square parking at the McHenry County government offices with free shuttles.
We chose to park near the square and after some looking, found a spot a couple blocks away.
We had a beautiful day for it as well. I am happy to report that we didn't buy anything, although we came close to spending $25 on a Northern Illinois University item.
There were 325 vendors at this year's event and several places where you could buy food. My overall opinion was that the wares sold were a bit on the expensive side, but it is always fun to look at the creative things they come up with.
Some signs that I particularly liked were:
Life hasn't been the same since a house fell onto my sister.
No Matter How Bad Life Gets, At Least I'm Not a White Sox Fan.
Beware, Dog Can't Hold It's Liquor.
Porta-Back Yarda
Man Cave-- Enter At Your Own Risk.
Sure You Can Trust the US Government, Just Ask an Indian.

Groundhog Days 2010-- Part 2
Continuing with this past Saturday, Jan. 30th.
Between the popcorn at the movie and the chili, I was quite full of all that good-for-you stuff.
Took a walk around the square. One store had photos from the filming of the movie displayed as well as autographed pictures of some of the actors in it.
Ran into my new friends from Michigan at the souvenir store I had told them about last night. Then, I went over to the Swiss Maid Bakery and had one of what they called Bill Murray's favorite sugar frosted smiley-face cookies that he had every day while on site. I hate smiley-faces, but couldn't help but feel kinship to Bill chowing down on it.
Bob Hudgins, the site manager from movie, again gave the walking tour. While looking for a site to film it, they had decided not to use the real Punxsutawney, Pa., for the movie because they had decided a square like in Woodstock would better project Phil's being stuck on one day than a linear main street with buildings along a street like in Punx.
They looked as far west as Mineral Point, Wisconsin and around sixty other towns. Bob had done work in Woodstock earlier where a few scenes from "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" were filmed and took Harold Raimis to the square. After climbing to the Opera House Tower and looking at the square below them, the choice of Woodstock was instantaneous.
I've been on the tour many times now, so left them by the theater and alley where the old man died.
I went back to Stage Left and we had the symposium when the people on the walk returned. This one was on favorite quotes from the movie. The leader had people from around the country vote on their favorite lines and the drink for world peace one came out number one.
Personally, I like "Do you want to throw up here or in the car?" "I think both." What you going to do with Ralph?
The guy who played the lead guitar in Phil's band was there.
At the conclusion of the symposium, I just had to stop at McDonald's for a McRib meal for some reason.

Heading Back to Woodstock, Illinois
Going back for Day 2 of the Hog's celebration with a viewing of the movie in the theatre featured in it, a chili cook off at the Opera House and a symposium on the movie there as well. In between, there will be a walking tour of movie-associated sites.
Hopefully, I will get a chance to go into the Cherry Street B&B where Phil stayed as well as the Tip Top Cafe where a lot of the movie took place. I have never been into either place.
Last night, I enjoyed a great Italian buffet, an oldies band and bachelor auction at the Moose Lodge where the movie's event took place. There was even a guy there that bore quite a resemblance to Chris Elliott, the camera guy from the movie.
Hopefully it won't be as C-O-L-D!! Out There as it was last night. We are getting snow right now as well.

CHICAGOISMS: A Chicagoan eats their pizza in squares, not triangles. Nor will they ever call it a pie. Even if a big pizza pie hits you in the eye like a moon in the sky!!!

Groundhog Day Celebration in Woodstock, Illinois
I have been lookingh forward to this annual event while freezing here in the Midwest. Something else to get me through these rotten "Global Warming" winters we've had these last three years.
It kicked off yesterday with a wine/beer tasting event in Woodstock. I didn't go as I had already been doing my own beer/Crown Royal tasting at Donovan's in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin.
In just a little bit, I head over to Woodstock to get my Dog On after stops in McHenry at Borders, Binny's (for some Rebel Yell Bourbon or perhaps some Royal Crown Whiskey) and Vinyl Frontier to look at used CDs.
Tonight, we have the "Awakening of the Groundhog" at 6 pm, followed by the "Shake Off the Winter Blues Charity Dinner Dance" at the Woodstock Moose Lodge, where the dance and bachelor auction were filmed in the movie.
Today or tomorrow, I hope to check out the new restaurant where the Tip Top Cafe was and the bed and breakfast where Bill Murray stayed which id being converted into a real B&B.

It's a Woodstock Tribute Near Woodstock
It's tribute bands doing a tribute to some of the bands that performed at the original Woodstock of 40 years ago this weekend. And, they are performing in Woodstock, as in Woodstock, Illinois. Interesting enough, this is where 18-year-old me thought the festival was all those years ago. I went, I looked, but couldn't find it.
The real one actually took place on a farm near Bethel, New York. And not at Woodstock, New York!!
This Woodstock happens at Galt Airport, near suburban Woodstock and takes place tonight and tomorrow. Organizers have scoured the United States and say they have found the best tribute bands of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, the Who, CCR, Grateful Dead, Santana, and two CSNY groups.
It costs $20 for tonight and $30 for Saturday, or $40 for both. On Wednesday, one of the CSNY (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young) groups gave a free concert in Woodstock's square (so prominently featured in the movie "Groundhog Day."
I have to work tomorrow, so again will miss my "Woodstock."

Who Wasn't at Woodstock? and Why?
And, yes, the Who were at Woodstock and What's still on second. I Don't Know is....
Yesterday, while looking at Answer.com in regards to Joe Cocker's birthday, they also had a list of groups who were scheduled to be at Woodstock, but didn't show (and why) as well as performers who declined (and why).
They SURE missed out on a "Big Thing!" And, then, there was me, who missed out because I thought it was in Woodstock, Illinois. When I found out Creedence was playing, I drove there...and couldn't find the festival. Imagine that?
All groups had to be invited. The Rolling Stones weren't invited because they charged too much.
INVITED, AGREED, BUT DIDN'T SHOW UP
JEFF BECK GROUP-- broke up shortly before
IRON BUTTERFLY-- stuck at airport. Demanded helicopter. Told to get lost.
JONI MITCHELL-- agent put her on Dick Cavett Show instead. Didn't she write that song about being at Woodstock?
INVITED, BUT DECLINED
BEATLES-- John Lennon said he couldn't get the band together
LED ZEPPELIN-- higher paying gig elsewhere
BOB DYLAN-- turned down appearance because he was disgusted with hippies hanging around his home. Imagine that?
BYRDS-- still upset at melee at Atlanta International Pop Festival July 4th and 5th.
TOMMY JAMES & THE SHONDELLS-- Size and scope of Woodstock not indicated to them.
JETHRO TULL-- Thought it wasn't a Big Deal. Also, later, thought their Grammy for Best Heavy Metal Group wasn't a Big Deal either.
MIND GARAGE-- Thought it wasn't a Big Deal and had a higher-paying gig elsewhere. Bad career move for them. Maybe they would have made it. I NEVER heard of them before.

Mardi Gras Zydeco--CJ Chernier & the Red Hot Louisiana Band at the Woodstock Opera House 2-8-08
I should mention that I also have several cassettes and CDs of his father, Clifton Chernier.
We had forecasts calling for another 2-3 inches of snow for last night. It started snowing on the way to Woodstock and continued during dinner at Angelo's, right on the historic Woodstock Square. So what's new these very snowy days. Fortunately, there wasn't any accumulation.
Angelo's was intended to be the original site of the Tip Top Cafe in the "Groundhog Day" movie, but the owner didn't want to be closed for the six weeks, so a vacant store across the square became the site of Phil's gluttony. The production company made it look as much as possible like Angelo's.
This being Friday in this area, it's hard to pass up on a good Fish Fry, and that is what we had. Liz had cod and I had whitefish. The place was crowded and a lot of folks were going to the show judging from their conversations.
The Woodstock Opera House was originally the city hall and built with a stage and auditorium for events. Built in the early 1900s, it is quite an impressive structure. During the filming of the movie, it was the Pennsylvania Hotel where Larry and Rita stayed. This is also the structure where Phil committed one of his suicides.
Still to be partied.

We had forecasts calling for another 2-3 inches of snow for last night. It started snowing on the way to Woodstock and continued during dinner at Angelo's, right on the historic Woodstock Square. So what's new these very snowy days. Fortunately, there wasn't any accumulation.

Groundhog Day Celebration A-Comin'
This Sunday, a favorite Illinois town of mine, Woodstock, starts their annual, I believe 15th, celebration of Groundhog Day with a pancake breakfast at the Moose Lodge. Our own Woodstock Willie will make the prognostication as to our future weather on Groundhog Day, February 2nd.
I have been to it the last four years and plan to be there on that date.
Woodstock is where the famous movie "Groundhog Day" starring Bill Murray was filmed, much to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania's chagrin. A walk around town will show you many of the movie's scenes.
February 1st will be the lighting of the Groundhog followed by a showing of the director's cut of the movie.
Feb. 2nd is the big day, with the prognostication at 7:07 a.m., a free showing of the movie at the Woodstock theater at 10, groundhog tales by celebrated local storyteller Jim May, a chili cookoff from noon to 1:15. A walking tour of the sites at 1:30 and plaque dedication of the alley where the old man died. Back at the Opera House (Pennsylvanian Hotel in the movie), there will be a symposium on the movie.
I know where I'll be.
