It's Hot, Real Hot, Today and Bob Stroud Did His Annual Ten at Ten Show on Summer Songs... It Must Be....: 'Under the Boardwalk'

This morning at 10 a.m., Bob Stroud played ten summer songs on his Ten at Ten show on Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM, the Drive.  The fact that its really warm, with 99 degrees forecast, June 21st and the fact that he played these ten songs makes me stringly believe that we must have enetered the best time of the year.  And, that would be... SUMMER!!.

Here are the ten songs he played.  All very Summer Worthy.

SCHOOL'S OUT--  Alice Cooper

IN THE SUMMERTIME--  Mungo Jerrry    My all-time most favorite summer song.

SUMMER BREEZE--  Seals & Crofts

UNDER THE BOARDWALK--  Drifters

SATURDAY IN THE PARK--  Chicago

DO IT AGAIN--  Beach Boys

HOT FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME--  Sly & the Family Stone

SUMMER IN THE CITY--  Lovin Spoonful

SUNNY AFTERNOON--  Kinks

MR. BLUE SKY--  ELO

Also, maybe, just maybe, today's date might have something to do with it.

By the way, you can hear this again at 10 pm tonight.  Plus, if you still need more Summer Songs, this Sunday Bob Stroud's Rock and Roll Roots show on WDRV will be three hours of summer songs from 9 am to noon, CDST.  It streams.

WLS Top 30 for Week of November 9, 1970-- Part 4: "Green Eyed Lady"

Fifty years ago (REALLY!!) in Chicago according to WLS 890 AM radio.  Young people listened to WLS and WCFL, 1000 AM for the latest songs.  FM was just getting started.

15.  LOLA--  Kinks    #9     Three straight of the greatest songs intros ever.  Instant recognition.  See  the Nov. 10 post for the other two.  Originally banned on some stations, but not because of what Lola was, but because of the mention of "Coca-Cola" which was changed to Cherry Cola.

14.  *SHARE THE LAND--  Guess Who      #10     Also instantly recognizable first notes.  Appropriate for the troubled times back then and now.  Their last Top Ten until "Clap for the Wolfman"  (#6-1974).

13.  GREEN EYED LADY--  Sugarloaf     #3    The fifth straight song om this countdown with those ear-catching first notes.  Do you prefer the 3:39 radio version or 6:52 album cut?  A comment on You Tube:  "The coolest thing ever for a 10-year-old was to go cruising with his older brother in his LeMans  with this playing on the 8-track."

12.  DEEPER & DEEPER--  Freda Payne     #24    Hardly ever gets played these days unless you're listening to MeTV FM, but on a lot back then.  The glory days of AM radio.  Follow up to "Band of Gold" (#3-1970).

11.  IT DON'T MATTER TO ME--  Bread     #10    The man with that romantic voice. Mr. David Gates who married his high school sweetheart.   I did too.  Great follow up to "Make It With You."

Name That Tune (from the above songs):  "Girls Will Be Boys And Boys Will Be Girls.  It's A Mixed Up, Muddled Up World."   Answer below.  --RoadDog

Ellas Otha Bates and Shel Talmy-- Part 2

A Kinks song on the CD called "Bald-Headed Woman" was credited to Shel Talmy.  Shel who?  According to Wikipedia, SDhel talmy was born in Chicago in 1937 and was a record producer, songwriter and arranger.  He is best-known for his work in the 1960s with the Kinks and Who.

He arranged and produced the Kinks' "You Really Got to Me," the Who's "My Generation" and "Friday On My Mind" by Australia's Easybeats.

He was also in on the Kinks' "All Day and All of the Night," ""Well-Respected Man," " So Tired of Waiting for You," ""Dedicated Follower of Fashion," "Sunny Afternoon" and "Waterloo Street."

He also worked with Davy Jones before he became David Bowie

The Kinks performed his "Bald Headed Woman" and ""I've Been Driving on Bald Mountain" on their first album.

The Who did his "I Can't Explain" and "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere."

Ellas Otha Bates and Shel Talmy, Songwriters You May Not Have Heard of Before

I have recently been buying a lot of old Kinks CDs.  I have always liked them, but essentially just in the 60s, "Lola" and a couple songs from the 80s.  But I have found out they were quite good in between and up until they may or may not have broken up.

This one CD i was listening to had, along with a lot of songs written by that Ray Davies guy, one written by an Ellas Otha Bates and several by a  Shel Talmy.  I looked them up.

Ellas Otha Bates had written a song called "Cadillac."  I had only previously heard it by a Chicago group called New Colony Six back in the 60s.  A great car song, especially with them spelling it out.  The Kinks did a great version as well.  I found out that Ellas Otha Bates was none other than one Bo Diddley.

Four New CDs (Well, New to Me)

Saturday, i went to my local mom and pop record store, The Vinyl Frontier,  in McHenry, Illinois to peruse the stacks of wax and whatever they make CDs out of.  The owner said that he had started the store when he heard that Skip at Full Cyrkle Records in Crystal lake was closing his shop.  He said that THERE SHOULD BE a place for us vinyl, non-downloading folk to go to and flip those albums until our hearts were content.

I not only flipped the vinyl, but also the CDs.

I bought Come Together: America Salutes rthe Beatles which is a collection of Beatle songs done by country stars like Tanya Tucker, Delbert McClinton Little Texas and even Chet Atkins.  I also got Music From Big Pink by the Band, that was their first outing in the record biz.

But two I was particularly happy with were by the Kinks.  I have been going back and collecting Kinks albums/CDs of late as I have gotten to like them even more than before.  They were the grungy Beatles before the Beatles got grungy.  The owner told me that someone had come in and sold their whole collection of Kinks and Creedence Clearwater Revival CDs.  I already have all the CCR/John Fogerty CDs.

I ended up buying The Live Kinks CD from the 1960s and Everybody's in Show-Biz.

Looking Forward to Some Listening.  --RoadDog
