JSS: Edmund Fitzgerald-- MASH Final Episode-- Marijuana Commerdials

JSS--  Just Some Stuff

1.  EDMUND FITZGERALD--  Almost forgot to mention that the Great Lakes ship Edmund Fitzgerald sank on November 10, 1975.  Go ahead and play that Gordon Lightfoot song.   What started out as a one-day presentation on the ship, using the song, eventually turned into a three-day presentation when I taught school.

2.  MASH FINAL EPISODE--  On Monday, Liz mentioned to me that MeTV was showing the entire MASH final episode show in honor of Veterans Day.    You forget what an excellent show that was.  And at least there was no Henry Blake leaving MASH.

3.  MARIJUANA COMMERCIALS--  We either get diabetes commercials these days, health sign up or, now that Illinois is getting around to legalizing recreational use of it on Jan. 1, we are sure getting a lot of marijuana commercials.  Those persons who were so smug that they could use it for medical reasons or angry.  And the places who got them the permission are saying you can still do better if you get it for medical purposes.

Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald

November 10, 1975, the freighter SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in a horrific storm on Lake Superior, one of the last Great Lakes disasters.

Of course, there is the song "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot which came out in 1976 and went to Number 1.  Hopefully WDRV will play that song today as they are in the letter "W" and are just playing "Wouldn't It Be Nice" by the Beach Boys.

My students used to hear the song and take it apart to find out all the history they could.  This eventually evolved into a four day unit on the Great Lakes.

(They did play it, but Bobby Skafish, the DJ, didn't know it (nor did I until Liz reminded me).  He said that two people had notified him on his Facebook page of the importance of playing that song on this day.)

Oops, I Forgot to Mention Two Significant Anniversaries Yesterday

I forgot to say congratulations to those gallant lads and ladies of the United States Marine Corps, which turned 233 years young yesterday. As they say, "Ooo-RAH!!!"

PLUS, yesterday, was the 35th anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior from one of those storms of November as Gordon would say. I see that the Detroit Historical Society had a presentation in its memory and also that of the Carl D. Bradley which sank in Lake Michigan during another November storm, Nov. 18, 1958.

While teaching, I would spend three days making a presentation on the Edmund Fitzgerald and the Great Lakes at this time. The kids could make a picture of the ship for extra credit and I collected some really nice ones over the years.

Plus, they would hear the "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot many, many times as well as Pat Dailey's "Great Lakes Song" and other water-related songs like "White Squall."

Let's Hear it For the Jarheads and a Moment of Reverance for the Crews of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Carl D. Bradley and All Ships That Went Down in the Great Lakes. --RoadDog
