4th of July, 2022: A Reading, a Talk and Fireworks

JULY 4th

Another birthday for our country.

I drove to McHenry and stopped at Jewel after getting two Sausage McMuffins at McDonald's (two for $2).  Bought six 12-packs of Diet Coke at Jewel for $20.  That's just $3.33 a pack, a great price in these days of inflation.  Seems like everything in grocery stores is more expensive or downsizing.

I went to the 4th of July commemoration in Veterans Park, put on by the McHenry American Legion and Polish League of American Veterans (PLAV).  We keep two folding chairs (not those sling things) in the trunk of the Malibu all summer as you never know when you're going to need them.  I used one at the park and found a nice spot shaded by a tree.

There was a reading of the entire Declaration of Independence, something that was often done in the early years of the celebration.  This was followed by a talk about formerly secret U.S. Army operations in Nicaragua and Central America back in the 1970s and 1980s.  It was a big secret and we lost quite a few military personnel in it.

The wife of Jeffrey C. Schwab was there.  He was killed in a helicopter crash on January 11, 1984.

Afterwards, I went over to the McHenry Legion and a big crowd of people  came in from the ceremony.  I sat next to Mrs. Schwab and had a nice talk with her.

Watched the Spring Grove fireworks display from the foot of the driveway, the only place you can still see  them since all the neighborhood trees have grown so tall.  We used to be able to see them from the front porch.

Getting Our 4th of July On: Parades, Fireworks, Bars and Festivals

This is a two weekend 4th of July with the actual day today in the middle of the week.  Around here, some places celebrated it last weekend, others, like Spring Grove, Illinois, are celebrating today and still others are celebrating this weekend.

Last Saturday, we went to Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, for their parade and did a lot of bar hopping.  Yesterday, we had that all-American slab of ribs at the Fox Hole in McHenry, Illinois, then went to the McHenry American Legion.

Also, somebody near our house had a fireworks display last night that was worthy of a town's fireworks.  A whole lot of money must have been spent, and, best of all, we were able to watch them from inside.  So sorry mosquitoes.

In just a little bit I am going over to Spring Grove for the parade and festivities for awhile,  Later, we'll go to Sunnyside Tap and then watch the Spring Grove fireworks from out front porch.

Of course, I have my U.S. flags out as well as ribbons and swags.

A Long 4th of July-- Part 4: Hot, Hot, Hot-- Real Hot (and Skeeters)

JULY 3, TUESDAY

Spent a goodly part of the morning trying to keep the chipmunks out of the bird seed.  I lost.  We went to Sunnyside and had the tacos (free) and watched the Cubs win their game. Even though I am a Sox fan, I played "Go Cubs Go" on the jukebox (and it is one of those lousy $1 songs).  This is the song Cubs fans sing after a win.

JULY 4, WEDNESDAY

Boy, today has to be one of the hottest 4th of Julys (4ths of July) ever.  I mean ever.  As a result, we didn't go to the Spring Grove parade or the festivities as we usually do.  On the internet and enjoyed listening to the Beach Music All-Time Top 40 on WVCO, the Surf, 94.9 FM.  The #1 song was "Ms. Grace" by the Tymes.  Love my Beach Music.  I'll be posting the Top 40 on this blog at a later date.

We went over to John and Sherry's annual 4th of July party at their house and had some great food and ice cold beer.  But, outside was a regular oven.  Stayed as long as we could bear it.

Lots of fireworks going on at dusk and into the night.  I went outside at 9:30 p.m. and watched the Spring Grove fireworks from the foot of the driveway.  Battled the skeeters and a few got through.

It's Been a Long Hot and Skeetery 4th of July

Not the best 4th of July ever, or not even close to it.

Since last Friday, June 29, it has been hot, hot and then more hot.  Unmerciful.  And then those skeeters!!  I've never seen them worse.  So, if the sun don't get you, the humidity will and that don't, then it's those doggone skeeters.

Last weekend, it was too hot to go see a parade, and the one in Fox Lake was cancelled because of the heat.  We didn't go see the one in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, either, for the same reason.  Then they had Libertyfest, bands and fireworks which we also didn't see.

Then, today, it was too blazing hot, humid and no breeze at all so we didn't see the Spring Grove, Illinois, parade or go to the festival.  We did go to a friend's home for a party but that heat just beat you down. We didn't stay as long as we wanted.  Nor go to Sunnyside afterwards.

A thunderstorm came through just recently so maybe we'll get a chance to see the Spring Grove fireworks from our front porch if the skeeters don't get us first.

Just Got Back From PCB-- Part 6: Patches, Sharkey's, Eat My Pasty, Donovan's and Fireworks

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 9

Snow back home.  67 degrees here in PCB today.   Drove to Patches with Glenn and Barb.  They were impressed.  A real locals dive bar and hard to find, but worth it.  Went to Sharkey's and sat out at that great big tiki hit by the water.

Had dinner at the British joint called Eat My Pasty which, of course serves pastys, which British miners used to eat.  Also enjoyed English beer.

Went to Donovan's and then enjoyed the Mardi Gras fireworks off the pier.  We watched from the motel.

A Trip Back Kind of Weekend-- Part 3: Confederates in Illinois, the Ribbon Road, Oktoberfest and Fireworks

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30

Drove to DeKalb, Illinois for the Sons of Confederate Veterans meeting and lunch at Rosita's on Lincoln Highway between our Camp Douglas Camp and the Rock Island Camp.  Confederates this far north!!  We also had quite a few members of the Sons of Union Veterans in attendance as well.  We heard an excellent presentation on the role of religion during the Civil War.

Afterwards, I took a ride on what used to be a ribbon road in DeKalb County, now Il-23 between DeKalb and Waterman and until this summer was called the worst road in DeKalb County because they had simply paved over the old ribbon road (9 feet wide which caused a whole lot of potholes.  I also drove through Elva, a town south of DeKalb that was started by barbed wire inventor Joseph Glidden and named for his daughter.

Stopped at Wal-Mart on Il-23 on the way back and loaded up on NIU stuff.

Liz and I went to McHenry for the St. Patrick's Church Oktoberfest and enjoyed brats and the bands.  Then over to Sunnyside where we saw the fireworks display from the Celebration in the Park of Johnsburg.  The park is right next to Sunnyside.  They had a good band there as well.

A Long Day.  --RoadDog

4th-en It-- Part 5: The Actual Day Of-- Band, Bars, Fireworks

JULY 4TH, TUESDAY

Flags flying all over the yard.I got to working in the yard and missed the parade in Spring Grove when I lost track of the time.  That was ok, because the parade started at noon and was almost two hours long with all those tractors (as we are a farming community).

We went to A.J.'s Horsin' Around Bar in Round Lake Park and saw Terry and Greg Spizzirri do their show from 2 to 5.  Met the Usual Suspects there and we sure had a great time.

We then went to Sunnyside for cocktails and several regulars came in on their tractors.  (Like I said this was, and still is a big farming area.)

Came home and did some more yard work and then watched our neighbor Dan shoot off an impressive fireworks display, after which we watched the Spring Grove firework show from our driveway.

Got the Flags Up and Plans for the 4th

It seemed like forever, but the 4th of July is finally really here.

The front of the house has two large U.S. flags, two pennants, two small flags and one on the mailbox.

The deck has a large U.S. flag flying from it and bunting.

All my blogs today will deal with the 4th of July for last post on each.

In a little bit, I'm going over to the Spring Grove, Illinois, parade and then to the festival grounds for a bite to eat.  Then we will go A.J.'s Horsin' Around bar in Round Lake Park to see Terry Spizziri and his nephew put on a music show, then back to Sunnyside for cocktails and food.

A  band will be playing at Horse Fair Park in Spring Grove and then we will go back to the house to watch the Spring Grove fireworks from the front porch.

Just Got Back from the Spring Grove Parade

Earlier today I drove over to Horse Fair Park in Spring Grove, Illinois, and paid my $5 to park.  I even "got" to park in the horse paddock and had to avoid you-know-what on the ground.  This always gets a big crowd.  Spring Grove ALWAYS has their 4th of July on the actual 4th of July, regardless of what day.

I am planning on going back later this evening for their band and then drive home to watch the fireworks from our driveway if the mosquitoes don't get us too badly.

Gettin' Our Fourth of July On

I already have all my U.S. flags up outside.

Wednesday, we went out to Grant High School in Fox Lake and saw our American Legion team defeat Lake Villa 7-5, then stopped at Hello Folks and paid Rick for our summer pier space on Fox Lake.  Last stop was the Legion.

Yesterday, we went to Donovan's Reef in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin,  for their Italian beef sandwiches and then to Antioch, Illinois, for their It's Thursday concert.  We saw Barstool Soldiers and R Gang.

Earlier today, we had those great breakfasts at K.C.'s Cabin and in a few minutes we're off to the Legion.

Tomorrow, Saturday, we're off to Twin Lake, Wisconsin, for the parade, then back to Fox Lake for their parade and festivities, then to the Legion for a band, then to a party at a friend's house in Johnsburg.  Later, a bonfire on the Strand and watching fireworks from the house.

Sunday it's the Fox Lake Historical Society ice cream social at the museum and a band at Captain's Quarters.

Monday we have the parade in Spring Grove, the festivities, a band and then watching the fireworks from our front yard.

Tuesday, let's hope we get the boat in the water...finally.

Way Too Much Going On Around Here This Weekend

I really hate it when there are way more things to do than I can possibly attend.  that is the situation this weekend.

We plan to go to the Fox lake American legion picnic this afternoon and Sunday, Liz and I will go to the St. John Parish fest in Johnsburg, Illinois for the food and entertainment by the great New Odyssey Band.  I will leave early from that and go to the Keep the Spirit of '45 Alice ceremony in nearby McHenry, Illinois.

However, here is a partial list of other things going on withing twenty miles of us:

Captains Quarters has bands tonight and tomorrow afternoon.

LAKE VILLA DAYS  August 6-9, 82nd annual, Featured Modern day Romeos last night and Bella Cain tonight as well as the famed water fights.

LAKEMOOR FEST--  August 7-9  Started in 1993 and has grown into one of the area's biggest events.  Entertainment and what is regarded to be the county's biggest fireworks displays.  Draws some 30,000 people a year,.

FOX LAKE RALLY BY THE LAKE--  Sunday.  Several hundred classic cars and entertainment at Lake Park.

McHENRY COUNTY FAIR

CRYSTAL LAKE BEACH BASH--  Today, featuring food and entertainment headlined by local favorites Modern Day Romeos.

A Good Fourth Around Here

A lot of yardwork, eating and fireworks.

JULY 3, FRIDAY--  I set out all my flags and banners.  Did yardwork every day, one of my pleasures.  This afternoon and early evening we were over at friends John and Sherry's for a 4th of July get-together.

JULY 4, SATURDAY--  Drove to twin lakes, Wisconsin for the parade and then met with friend Gayle who has moved to Arizona and had her boyfriend Charlie along with her.  It was great catching up with her and meeting Charlie at both Main Street Tap and Donovan's.

Stopped at the Spring Grove 4th of July grounds at Horse Fair Park for awhile, then went home.  Watched the fireworks show for the village from the front of our house as usual.

JULY 5, SUNDAY--  Listened to Bob Stroud's Summer of 1975 show in the morning.  remembered we had our first 4th of July in our new house in Round Lake Beach 40 years ago in 1975.

Went to Nauti-Knots on Bluff Lake and sat out by the tiki bar on a perfect day.  Then went to Captain's Quarters on Fox Lake and watched the Eddie Butts Band and stopped at Lakeview Place on Grasslake.

More Good Times in the Area

FRIDAY, AUGUST 1ST:  After arriving back home from the North Carolina trip, we went over to Kevin and Kelly's place on Fox Lake for a get-together with the Usual Suspects.  Afterwards, we went to the Legion.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 2ND:  Did some bargain-hunting in plant nurseries in McHenry, cut the grass and went to captain's Quarters on Fox Lake to watch the band called Pirate Radio.  Then to the Legion where we watched the fireworks from Fox Lake's Venetian Night and had a great time watching the POWW wrestlers and their fans party on after their matches in the Legion hall.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 3RD:  Of course, I had to record Bob Stroud's Summer of 1974-- Part 3 in the morning.

Then did some major yard work in the front yard.  We had planned to go to Captain's again for their afternoon band, Funk Libido Circus, but ended up meeting Glenn and Barb at Brown's Sip and Go.  We later adjourned back to the Legion for the Sons of the American Legion (Glenn belongs also), but found it had been cancelled.

Spending That Last 4th of July Weekend

This was a bonus 4th of July with celebrations both weekends and even on the real, authentic day.  We spent the first three days fighting some really hot days, but it finally broke yesterday.

THURSDAY

Boating and breakfast on the boat at McDonald's in Fox Lake..  NTN at Donovan's and some good national rankings, seven Top Twenties.  Later visits to the Hideout by Petite Lake and Captain's Quarters by Fox Lake.

FRIDAY

Third straight day over 100 degrees.  The Fox Lake Bump as gas jumps 20 cents for the second time in a week.  Hey, let's get all their money we can!!  Stormy Monday and later karaoke at the Legion.

SATURDAY

Temps only in the "cool" 90s.  Recorded WXRT's Saturday Morning Flashback to 1968.  Great tunes and memories.  Planning on taking the boat out to watch the fireworks on Fox Lake, but reports called for a storm.  Drove instead to Captain's Quarters but way too crowded.  Ended up having an excellent view of them from Stormy Monday.

SUNDAY

Bob Stroud did his Rock and Roll Roots show on "Living In the USA."  Had that great pizza at All Sports in McCullom Lake and then drove to Wauconda and sat out on the deck and saw Terry Spizzirri and Gregg Spizzirri put on a great show at Docks on a bluff overlooking Bang's Lake.

On the way home, stopped at Route 12 Bar and Grill on the way home and listened to Just Jake singing and playing that guitar which he does so well.

JSS: White Sidewalks-- Not Much Boating-- No Harvest Moon for Us-- But, Fireworks

JSS-- Just Some Stuff.

1. WHITE SIDEWALKS-- Yesterday, I had my friend Lance come up with his pressure washer to do some long overdue power washing of the sidewalks and patios around the house. The new white ones sure create a glare and can cause eyestrain in direct sunlight

2. NOT MUCH BOATING-- Between the weather and Liz's eye appointments, I've only been out on the boat twice since returning home from North Carolina. I have to get some more in as the end of the season is fast approaching and we get those earlier and earlier nightfalls.

3. NO HARVEST MOON FOR US-- I didn't know that a Harvest Moon was a full moon that occurs on the first official day of fall. And, we had one Wednesday, but we couldn't see it because of all the clouds. Too bad, I would have liked to be able to say I'd seen one. You know, "Shine On

4. BUT, FIREWORKS-- Coming back from a local restaurant last night, Liz and I saw fireworks out to the south, not something you expect to see on a Thursday night in September. It was the bonfire and fireworks display that Johnsburg High School has every night before their homecoming game.

I rushed around to the back of the house and could see them quite easily from near the gazebo. We used to be able to see them from the deck, but some clown, who shall remain nameless, planted too many trees at the back of our property and...they grew.

Nice fireworks display.

Too Bad About the Fireworks-- Summer 1970 Tomorrow

Well, I guess after 16 years of growing, it should be of no surprise that the trees in our subdivision have really blocked out our view of the fireworks over Fox Lake.

I could see parts of then through one of my trees, but not good enough so, next year, looks like we'll be out on the boat for it.

In that case, there will be no drinking for me that day.

SUMMER 1970

Tomorrow, Bob Stroud should be Time Warping us back to the songs playing on our radios and stereos for July 4, 1970. His Rock and Roll Roots Show is on WDRV, 97.1 and 96.9 FM from 7 to 10 am CSDT. It streams live at www.wdrv.com.

If you're o-l-d like me, this will bring back some memories.

Them Fireworks

We're still able to see the fireworks from the house, even though our trees and those of the neighbors are getting much taller. Imagine that one of these days, that will no longer be possible, but until thwn, we can "ooh and awe" all we want from the front yard and back deck.

Friday, July 4th, Independence Day in more ways than one, we saw a very good display from our hometown of Spring Grove from the front yard. For a town with just under 5,000, we do a good job.

Then, Saturday, we were able to see both the displays from Fox Lake and Johnsburg from the back deck. The Fox Lake one was the first in about thirty years that did not take place over Mineola Bay in Fox Lake.

One Massive Fireworks Display- Good Times Out on the Chain

Last night, we had one of the best fireworks displays ever out on the Chain of Lakes here in the northeastern part of Illinois. This was billed as the second biggest in the state and I wouldn't doubt it. They were going off three and four at a time with a big halfway display, and then the end covered the whole sky for a good five minutes. You couldn't have counted the explosions if you had wanted to do so.

Of course the several thousand boats and their anchor lights was quite a sight as well.

The day started for me at 10 AM with what probably was the Village of Fox Lake's longest-ever parade that went on for a little over an hour. This was part of the Celebrate Fox Lake party in honor of the centennial of incorporation.

I lost count of all the firetrucks at the beginning of it and their sirens and air horns were deafening, causing little kids to cover their ears and great discomfort among the dogs. I was surprised to see that the old Mineola Hotel, our answer to the Grand Hotel in Mackinac, Mi, had two old fire engines itself dating back to the era before Fox Lake was incorporated one hundred years ago.

The kids were very disappointed at first as it is the tradition around here to throw candy from the cars and floats. No one was throwing anything. However, after about twenty minutes they were able to start loading up their candy bags.

After about 30 minutes, there was a break in the parade, so I walked over to the vendor/food area and talked with some friends at the American Legion booth and had an excellent bratwurst from Freddie's, a favorite lakeside tavern of mine where I like to play NTN.

Drove over to Woodstock to visit with my mother-in-law Frances and enjoy that great old square and farmer's market.

I came home and then Liz and I went over to Baja Benny's on Fox Lake and enjoyed an oldies band playing on the deck overlooking the water. Then it was on to Rick's, where we keep our boat on a channel. Matt had spent quite a bit on fireworks and they were setting them off. We then went to Rick's Turkey Bar (he is known as the Turkey Man because he caters a lot of parties with his deep-fried turkey) on the channel and listened to the Michael Lescher Band playing several doors down the channel at Kevan's. Later, Rick brought out two deep-fried turkeys. Now, that is some good eatin'.

Last stop was over at the Kellehers where we enjoyed the fireworks. They have a place right on Fox Lake. It was almost deja vu at the start. One group of fireworks went up and about two minutes later, another group. Then, we had nothing for twenty minutes. However, the numerous parties along the shore had their own fireworks shows going on, and some were almost as impressive as some small towns. They must have spent large amounts of money on them.

Two years ago, we had the infamous L-O-N-G fireworks display that went on for four hours, a little at a time. That was the most boring one I've ever seen. (The company had a computer glitch, but put on a free one later in August to make up for it.) We were just packing to laeve, when the show went on. I guess we should've gotten ready to leave sooner. It was worth the wait.

We also found a reasonably fast way to get home as all the cars leave at the end. Last year, I spend about an hour going absolutely nowhere on Grand Avenue as they were letting all the Mineola peple go through first. There were hundreds of boats line up going under Beer Can Bridge and the other US Route 12 bridge. That was quite an impressive sight.

Today, we went back over to the Kellehers for the Day After Party I. We had planned to have Ribfest I, but it was too hot (temps in middle 90s). We were forced to make do with roast beef sandwiches. Well, some people just have to make sacrifices sometimes.

Finally Finished with Fourth of July Celebrations. --RoadDog

The Really Big Shoooow!

Fireworks over Mineola Bay in honor of Fourth of July and Fox Lake's Centennial Celebration.

Pete Jakstas, Sr., the owner of the historic Mineola Hotel dating back to the 1880s, says he remembers back to the first couple of years when he put on the show for boaters and landlubbers with a budget of $4,200. This year's has $65,000 worth of fireworks and is considered the second biggest in Illinois after Chicago's $100,000 show on Tuesday.

He promises it to be the biggest show ever. Also, it will be his last as he is retiring. About 30,000 are expected to view if from several thousand boats anchored in Fox Lake as well as many parties along the shores. Of course, there will be a big celebration at the Mineola. The show will last 28 minutes.

J & M Fireworks Display of Burlington, Iowa, will put on the show.

"There will be surprises and a finale that no one will ever forget," said Jakstas.

We're headed out for a couple parties in a few minutes. However, we will view it from shore. It is too much of a madhouse out on the water. But all those anchor lights bobbing up and down is impressive in itself.

Oooohin' and Ahhhhhhin' Again. --RoadDog
