Just Like Old Times Around Here-- Part 4: Civil War, CDs, Sliders, $1 Draft Beer, Pig Roast and a Band

SATURDAY, JUNE 26

Sat out FP (Front Porch) for coffee and breakfast.  Went on the internet for a short while and wrote questions for today's discussion group on Veterans Organizations of the Civil War and did some research.  This is for the McHenry County Civil War Round Table discussion group.

Listened to Bill St. James and his Time Warp show on WDRV and then WXRT's Saturday Morning Flashback at home and in the car.  Today it was to 1975, a great year for music.

Drove to Panera Bread in Crystal Lake, Illinois, for the meeting which was held inside for the first time since February 2020.  The two major veterans groups after the war were the Union's Grand Army of the Republic and the South's United Confederate Veterans.

Afterwards, I went to my favorite store these days, Half Price Books in Algonquin, and bought eight CDs.  The I picked up tp Sliders at White Castle.

That evening, Liz and I went to Sticky's in Johnsburg and enjoyed their $1 draft pints.

SUNDAY, JUNE 27

I did what I do most every Sunday during the summer, some of it even last year.  I sit FP  (Front Porch) for coffee, breakfast and reading.  Then go on the internet and work on blogs.  Then listen to different radio shows:  Acoustic Storm on the Drive, WXRT's Breakfast With the Beatles and WDRV's Rock and Roll Roots.

In the afternoon, we went over to the American Legion in McHenry, Illinois, for their annual Pig Roast.  It was auce and all the beer you can drink for $10.  I tell you, I can live with this price.  Plus, we had a great country rock/blues  band called Dixie Rising.

One Last Trip Back to the Summer of '75-- Part 1: One of These Nights"

Bob Stroud did his last of four Rock and Roll Roots shows this past Sunday, September 6th on Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM.

He was playing the songs playing on the radio and on our stereos from 40 years ago.

I was starting my third year of teaching at John T. Magee Middle School in Round Lake, Illinois.  I no longer was teaching 9th graders as they had all been moved to the high school, but I still had 7th and 8th graders.  This was also our first year in our first home, built by Fairfield Builders at 1013 Morningside in Round Lake Beach.  Our dog Brandy was getting used to her new yard after living first in the apartment in Vernon Hills.

Liz was starting her first full year as a first grade teacher at Beach School in Round Lake Beach.  We were spoiled with very short drives to our respective schools.

For the second half of his Rock and Roll Roots show, Bob Stroud jumped ahead ten years to 1975.  I was finishing up my second year of teaching and we were living in an apartment in Vernon Hills, Illinois.  We were getting ready to have a house built for us in Round Lake Beach for $33,000.  We moved in during the summer and lived there for 17 years.

No Lines or Danger for Me: The Advantage of Being Technologically Impaired

Much was made last week of idiots, er, people, waiting in lines at stores for the newest iPhone when it was released.  I hate lines, but even so, was not tempted to wait in one as I don't even have the first one. 

The cell phone I do have is about eight years old and has stuff on it, but all I know how to do is call out and sometimes answer a call if I hear it and can get it out of my pocket in time.  If it goes to voice mail, there is a 50-50 chance I'll figure out how to bring it up.

And, then there is this new effort to get folks to stop texting while driving.  I don't have to stop doing that as I have never in my life texted in a car, or, for that matter, anywhere.  Shoot, if I were to get even a phone call, I wonder where the music is coming from most of the time (my ringtone is "Bad Moon Rising," although I have been known to reach for the phone when the radio plays the song).

If I haven't forgotten it at home, there is no way I can get it out of my pocket while seated and seatbelted.  We can evidently text.  Liz has the same phone and does text two friends who are into texting.  It involves hitting keys several times, but I don't know how and won't bother learning either.

Once the "A" side "Another Park, Another Sunday" ran its course, disc jockeys began flopping it over and found this one. (Talk about your two-sided hits? Personally, I always turned my 45s over to hear what was on the other side and often found that song to be as good or better as the "A" side.)

After playing the songs from March 6, 1965, Stroud jumped ahead ten years to that date 1975.

I was in my second year of teaching and we had just bought a new house in Round Lake Beach for $33,000 at 1013 Morningside. They broke ground on St. Patrick's Day and we moved in that June. How about $33,000 for a house? That will buy you a nice car these days.

Compared to 2008, when all you had to do was "say" you had enough money to buy a house, you wouldn't believe all the hassle they put us through to get that FHA loan at 8-and-a-half percent.

Liz had just gotten a job with the Round Lake school district as well and was teaching at Beach School.

We were commuting from our apartment at Villas By the Lake in Vernon Hills, Illinois.
