Music Deaths: Jan Savage of the Seeds

Died 5 August 2020

Guitarist with the Los Angeles garage psychedelic rock band Seeds who had the big hit "Pushing Too Hard"  (#36-1967).  They also charted well with the song "Can't Seem to Make You Mine."

Had the psychedelic sound down very well.  A lot of their success came from Jan Savage with his guitar playing.  Lead singer was Sky Saxon.

Very unique sound all around.  A master of the fuzz guitar.

Wonder how they came up with the name Seeds?

Well, I Went to My Local Record Store on Record Store Day Today

I drove to McHenry, Illinois, just a few hours ago and visited my usual mom and pop record store, The Vinyl Frontier.  I always thought that was a great name for a record store.  Quite catchy.

However, this year, the store was not participating.  Evidently there is a $1500 cost involved to be in it, and business has been so bad thanks to you-know-what, they are sitting this one out.

However, I did what I was going to do anyway and that was buy at least one album and five CDs.

K-Tel Hit Machine  ($3)  1976  Those old K-Tel and Ronco collection albums were a great way to build up your record collection cheaply.  They usually had at least 20 songs.

30.  RESPECT--  Aretha Franklin   (#1)  "The Queen of Soul" took an Otis Redding song and made it her own.  Surprisingly, one of only two #1s.  The other one came in 1987.

29.  CASINO ROYALE--  Herb Alpert   (#27)  Title song from the movie featuring David Niven and Peter Sellers.  Blow those horns!!

28.  CLOSE YOUR EYES--  Peaches and Herb   (#8)  Soul duo from Washington, D.C..  Does slow soul get any better than this?

What's Going On With Mitch Ryder?

From the April 6-12, 2014, American Profile "Ask American Profile."

The native of Hamtramck, Michigan, 69, has been working on a novel he plans to adapt to a musical, tentatively called Hide Your Love Away.  Ryder lives in Detroit and performs about 90 shows a year.

The high-octane rocker and his band, the Detroit Wheels, scored Top Ten hits in the 1960s with "Devil With the Blue Dress On/Good Golly Miss Molly," "Sock It to Me Baby" and "Jenny Take a Ride."  He wrote and autobiography, "Devil & Blue Dresses" in 2011 and released his latest CD, The Promise" in 2012.

Another favorite performer of mine and one of the ultimate garage/frat rockers ever.

"MAYBE"-- CHANTELS

"Maybe," the song covered by Janis Joplin in the earlier posting, was first recorded by the Chantels, considered to be the second all-girl black group to have success in the US (not sure who was the first). In 1958, this song hit #15 pop and #2 R&B. It is described as "arguably the first glimmering of the girl group sound."

Rolling Stone ranks it #195 on their list of 50 Greatest Songs of All Time.

"YOU, I" RUGBYS

Called Classic Top 40 Psychedelic Pop with that wah-wah pedal. I also call it Garage Rock and sure Little Steven would agree. The group was from the Louisville, Kentucky area and the song was on the Amazon record label, which was a bit sexy with the woman's attire.

"You, I" hit #1 on Louisville local charts and #24 on Billboard.

Not in Wikipedia. I found this information on the Garage Hangover web site. If you like garage bands, this has to be checked out. www.garagehangover.com.

One person wrote in to say the band played their prom in Harrisburg, Illinois, in 1970, and they made the event great.

JSS-- More Snow--Tribune to 75 Cents--Little Steven's 300th--Trouble With Harry

Just Some Stuff-JSS.

1. We got another 3-4 inches of snow between last night and this morning. Yesterday, there was about an inch on the ground. Last Friday, we had another 7 inches, but it was a perfect snowfall, big flakes drifting lazily to the ground and painted all the trees and bushes. Fortunately, most of the snow we had in the earlier part of December had melted. I'm guessing we've had at least 20 inches and very likely more this winter.

2. Alas, the Chicago Tribune has raised its daily price (excluding Sundays) to 75 cents. There was no warning of it and evidently, the increase went into effect yesterday.. I get it deleivered from Wednesday to Sunday. I saw notification on a rack of newspapers at a convenient mart and had to tell the clerk it was no longer 50 cents. Probably should have kept my mouth shut, but I'm an honest guy. Had to tell another clerk about the price increase today.

3. Just listening to the current Little Steven's Underground Garage which has now been moved from Monday nights on WXRT, Chicago's Finest Rock, 93.1 FM to Sunday nights from 9 PM to 11. This is really one great show, but unfortunately, I didn't start listening to it until about three months ago. Rock and Roll is not dead, it lives on with Little Steven. This is a great place, especially if you like garage rock. Give it a listen. Go to his website to find a station near you, or, WXRT does stream.

Little Steven refers to CDs as albums and says if God had wanted people to text without vowels that he wouldn't have invented vowels.

4. Last night, I watched the Alfred Hitchcock movie "The Trouble with Harry." That had to be the biggest group of crazy folks ever assembled, and, how many times can you bury and dig up a guy? Talking with Ken today at Hello Folks who is a big fan of the movie. He said that the little kid was Jerry Matthers, of "Leave it to Beaver" fame.
