Savannah Trip-- Part 2: All Sorts of History, Records and a Huc-A-Poo

My sister Julie's boyfriend, Ed, really could be my brother from another mother.  We are really a lot alike.  He is a history nut, overly zealous collector and was even a deejay.  I sure did a lot with him while there.

APRIL 4, THURSDAY

A really busy day.  We (that would be Ed and I) went to Parris Island, a huge USMC training base and visited the museum there, then to Fort Fremont, an 1898 battery and drove around Beaufort S.C. and saw the house where the movie "The Big Chill" was filmed then went to the Beaufort National Cemetery and paid our respects at the Confederate section.

Later, we went to a train club meeting at the Savannah Round House and then saw a concert by Ricky Skaggs and his band.

APRIL 5, FRIDAY

This was record store day for us.  We went to Rody's in Savannah where I bought a Delbert McClinton and James Hunter Six CD.  Next was Coastal Records in Wilmington, Ga. (near Tybee Island).  I found out we were close to Huc-A-Poos on Tybee and went there.  Ed had never even heard of it.  Talk about an experience.

Then it was to Julie's cat rescue house and Ed's Ranch where he has a huge model train layout.

Record Store Day Booty

This past Saturday was Record Store Day across the nation.  Mom and Pop Record Stores are one of the few places I feel like I'm home anymore.  In other words, I understand most anything in it.

As such, I visited my favorite Mom and Pop Record Store, The Vinyl Frontier, in McHenry, Illinois.  There were quite a few others also paying respects and buying albums and CDs.

I bought ten CDs and three albums.

Like I said in an earlier post, this St. Patrick's Day was a whole lot more fun than the one in 2020.

Listened to CDs by Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly.  Irish music with an edge as you might guess with names like that.  Listened to that great You Tube mix of Irish Drinking Songs.

Met Kevin and Kelly at Stucky's in Johnsburg for our St. Patrick's Day meal.  Kevin and Liz had the corned beef & cabbage while Kelly and I had the shepherd's pie.  I don't remember ever having shepherd's pie before and it is excellent.

We had a discussion as to where shepherd's pie came from.  I kind of thought it was from England, but Kelly said it was from Ireland.  I looked it up later and she was right.

Lots of green being worn for some reason and Krystal was quite an eyeful.  Watched some more of the NCAA on TV.  More great games.  Jim Seig and his band performed as they do every Thursday at Stucky's.  We've been listening to him for at least 30 years.  Great time.

Came home and watched more NCAA Tournament in Margaritaville, our basement bar.

Quite warm for this time of the year.  Made it even nicer, especially after how cold it was last weekend.

The Very Best of Outlaw Country: 'The South's Gonna Do It Again'

Several months ago, I was in Wal-Mart going through their bin of close out CDs and found this great little nugget for the whopping price of $5.  Well, quick as a wink, I grabbed it.  I wasn't going to let it get away from me.

I already had most of the songs on other LPs, CDs and cassettes, but this collection would fit in just great in my Ultimate Jukebox.

And, besides that, I am a real big fan of Outlaw Country.  One of my favorite albums, of course, is "Wanted! The Outlaws."

About Last Week: Maxell Cassette Tapes, Alex's Gyros, The Vinyl Frontier Records and the Legion

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 8

Went to McHenry, Illinois, and to Meijer and was all too happy to buy two more 5-pack bricks of Maxell cassette tapes for recording purposes.  Yep, I still record on cassettes.  This is one of the few places I know of where I can buy them.

We had plans to eat at our favorite Chinese buffet, the Grand Buffet, and got the door only to find they are closed on Tuesdays.  Disappointed, but I remembered I wanted to go to Alex's on 120 in town because I'd heard they had a great gyro sandwich.  They did.

Then, we went to The Vinyl Frontier on 120, a great mom and pop record store that had just moved in the fall from its long-time store on Riverside Drive.  I bought eight CDs.  

Then, we wanted to go to the PLAV (Polish Legion of American Veterans), but they had too many people so went to the American Legion instead and had a really great time with the folks there and especially enjoyed the $1.50 rum and Cokes during happy hour.

Just Like Old Times Around Here-- Part 4: Civil War, CDs, Sliders, $1 Draft Beer, Pig Roast and a Band

SATURDAY, JUNE 26

Sat out FP (Front Porch) for coffee and breakfast.  Went on the internet for a short while and wrote questions for today's discussion group on Veterans Organizations of the Civil War and did some research.  This is for the McHenry County Civil War Round Table discussion group.

Listened to Bill St. James and his Time Warp show on WDRV and then WXRT's Saturday Morning Flashback at home and in the car.  Today it was to 1975, a great year for music.

Drove to Panera Bread in Crystal Lake, Illinois, for the meeting which was held inside for the first time since February 2020.  The two major veterans groups after the war were the Union's Grand Army of the Republic and the South's United Confederate Veterans.

Afterwards, I went to my favorite store these days, Half Price Books in Algonquin, and bought eight CDs.  The I picked up tp Sliders at White Castle.

That evening, Liz and I went to Sticky's in Johnsburg and enjoyed their $1 draft pints.

SUNDAY, JUNE 27

I did what I do most every Sunday during the summer, some of it even last year.  I sit FP  (Front Porch) for coffee, breakfast and reading.  Then go on the internet and work on blogs.  Then listen to different radio shows:  Acoustic Storm on the Drive, WXRT's Breakfast With the Beatles and WDRV's Rock and Roll Roots.

In the afternoon, we went over to the American Legion in McHenry, Illinois, for their annual Pig Roast.  It was auce and all the beer you can drink for $10.  I tell you, I can live with this price.  Plus, we had a great country rock/blues  band called Dixie Rising.

Well, I Went to My Local Record Store on Record Store Day Today

I drove to McHenry, Illinois, just a few hours ago and visited my usual mom and pop record store, The Vinyl Frontier.  I always thought that was a great name for a record store.  Quite catchy.

However, this year, the store was not participating.  Evidently there is a $1500 cost involved to be in it, and business has been so bad thanks to you-know-what, they are sitting this one out.

However, I did what I was going to do anyway and that was buy at least one album and five CDs.

Get Your Vinyl Fix Right Now with WXRT in Chicago

Today, WXRT, 93.1 FM in Chicago is doing all vinyl Friday for the 4th of July weekend.  That means they are putting the needle down on those wonderful discs and playing a whole side.  They just finished Bob Marley's "Exodus" album, side 2.

So, if vinyl is your thing, as it is with me (but, hey, I like those CDs also) give them a listen. It started at 9 am and goes to midnight.  Streams.

And I need some summer songs and perhaps an ice cold beer.   The temperature outside here in northeast Illinois is 92 degrees in the shade, no breeze and fairly humid.  Hanging out inside the air conditioned house and naturally cool basement is on the to do list.

They just put on a Queen album, the one with "We Will Rock You."  See if you can guess the name of the album.

1.  DUMB COMMERCIALS--

 How dumb is that Pepsi commercial with Nate and Kate as taste buds in your mouth?  Way too much flirting and stupid dialogue.  How much longer must we be subjected to it?

Plus, that weird little Prince-ish guy for Diet Dr. Pepper.

2.  CALVIN & HOBBES--  I sure wish the creator Bill Watterson would bring it back.  But, I go to Go Comics every day and see am old one.  On August 6, 2019, we see Calvin talking to his tiger, Hobbes, and saying:  "Dad might be a secret super hero but driving a car that isn't cool.  I know, ours doesn't even have a cassette deck."    Kind of dates the comic strip.

Today's kids wouldn't even know what a cassette deck is.  Shoot, in Chevrolets, you can't even get a CD deck anymore.  That will be a big problem when we buy our next Chevrolet.  I have to have at least a CD player.  Last year, we sold our '03 Malibu which had both a CD and a cassette player.  Now  that was a great sound system.  Our '11 Malibu at least still has a CD player.

3.  BUTTERFLIES & HUMMINGBIRDS--  Well, butterflies might be endangered now, but I sure have a lot out in the yard.  As a matter of fact, I usually have several fly into me whenever I'm outside.  I especially have a lot of monarch butterflies.  I also have several hummingbirds (even though I don't feed them) that scare me badly every time I see see them.  My first thought is, "Look at the size of that mosquito!!"

One Great Time Last Weekend-- Part 2: Choppers, Jon Polit On Deck, Sunnyside, Margaritaville and the Ultimate Jukebox

SATURDAY, AUGUST 10

FP (Front Porch).  Yard work.

We went to Choppers Bar and Grill on Illinois Highway 173, west of Antioch and sat outside on their deck under the huge old oak trees on an absolutely gorgeous day.  A 16 ounce draft beer is just $2 all the time.  Plus, we had one of our favorite singers, Jon Polit,  performing and we sure had a great time.  he is very interactive with the crowd while playing a wide variety of songs.

And, even better, there was a crowd but not so many that it became difficult to do things.  For years most every Sunday afternoon on the Chain of Lakes, you could find us at the outside bar of Captain's Quarters on Fox Lake, listening to their great afternoon bands.  But the place has gotten way too popular with huge crowds so we don't often go there anymore.

Choppers has crowds, but not too big.  Plus, we have boats going by on a channel.  Probably the only drawback was that we had to go inside to get our drinks.  Oh well!

We went by Sunnyside in Johnsburg before returning home where I enjoyed FP again and then adjourned to the basement and Margaritaville where I sat at the bar and enjoyed my Ultimate Jukebox which has 300 CDs.

Will This Winter Ever Get Over?-- Part 2: Books, CDs, Sliders, Band and Da Hawks

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23

After the meeting, I drove over to the nearby Illinois emission testing station and the Malibu passed.  Then drove south to Randall Road, one of the busiest and most congested roads in the Northwest Suburbs. Always hate driving it, but have to to get to my favorite store still remaining, Half-Price Books.

I mean, they have vinyl records, CDs and books, three of my most favorite things.  And, they are all fairly cheap, even better.  Bought a Civil War book and two CDs, one the Beatles "Hard Day's Night" and the other a compilation of Cajun music.

Then, a stop at White Castle for sliders and they now have those great crab cake sliders.

Later, we went to the Fox Lake American Legion and enjoyed listening to Mitch Edwards playing his great selection of songs.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 24

There was a real hard wind blowing today.  We wanted to watch the Chicago Blackhawks game since they were playing a rare afternoon game at 2 pm.  But, the first three places we went to were too crowded (and most were watching the NASCAR race).  We ended up back at Half-Times for the game, which, unfortunately, we lost.

I Made It To Record Store Day-- Part 2: CD and K-Tel Albums

I went to the Vinyl Frontier Record Store in McHenry, Illinois, for Record Store Day this past Saturday.

I bought the Harry Nilsson Anthology CD with two CDs worth of his songs.  Always love the two-fers.  It has all of his Top 100 hits including "Me and My Arrow," "Without You," "Coconut," "Jump Into the Fire" and "Everybody's Talkin'."

Unfortunately, it did not have the song "Rainmaker" which was on the flip side of "Everybody's Talkin'" and was played so often at Rick's in DeKalb, Illinois, back during my freshman year at NIU.

I have a great love for the collection albums, where you really get your money's worth.  I often refer to them as K-Tel albums because of that company that put out so many of this type of album.  I know some record buffs don't like them and, at the mom and pop record stores, they are usually very cheap.

But, Give Me a K-Tel Anytime.  --RoadDog

Record Store Day TODAY!!-- Part 3: Going

I know where I am going to be this afternoon.

I will definitely be at The Vinyl Frontier in McHenry, my home mom and pop record store.  But I am also thinking of possibly getting up to Track One Vintage Stereo in Antioch, Illinois at 348 North Avenue.

Plus, there is Black Circle Records in nearby Lake Geneva, Wisconsin at 772 W. main Street.

I like having at least a few record stores around me.

Every Record Store Day I like to think back on my three all-time favorite record stores, all now gone, but at least two I think still operate online.

Record Store Day Tomorrow-- Part 2: Flipping Those Albums

Many artists are releasing vinyl for the event.  A new favorite of mine, St. Paul & the Broken Bones love their home state of Alabama and are releasing an Alabama-shaped record tomorrow,  It was recorded live at the Alabama Theater.

Two stores here in northern Illinois who will be participating are Sunshine Daydream--Hippie Store at 7085 Rand Road, by the Wal Mart in Lake Zurich.

Also, it is good to see a record store back in DeKalb, Illinois to replace my big fav, Record Revolution.  The new one is Green Tangerine Records at 1150 S. Fourth Street.  DeKalb also used to have Apple Tree Records which was a great place as well.
