JSS: OK, Call It Global Warming-- Japanese Beetles-- Long Distance, Please

JSS--  Just Some Stuff

1.  OK, CALL IT GLOBAL WARMING--  After this past two weeks, go ahead and call it Global Warming.  You'll get no argument from me.

2.  JAPANESE BEETLES--  They're back.  But their numbers don't approach anything like in their heyday ten years ago.  They do two things, eat and procreate.  I often find one on top of another and they are prime targets.  They can't move fast and at least I know I get a female so no eggs and new beetles from her.

3.  LONG DISTANCE, PLEASE--  I read that President Nixon called the Apollo 11 folks fifty years ago.  Hopefully he had a REAL lot of quarters, dimes and nickels to cover THOSE long distance charges in 1969!!   Another quarter, please.

I remember calling Liz in Illinois when my family was on vacation in North Carolina when I was in high school and college.  I would have to gave a pocketful of change.  It seemed that every few minutes the operator was asking for more money.  This was an expensive thing to do.

I'd Celebrate That!!! March 9-10: Bang-Clang Day Today

MARCH 9

BANG-CLANG DAY--  **  The anniversary of the battle between the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia, the first battle between ironclads.  And, with me being such a big Civil War buff, you know I'd celebrate this one.

BARBIE DAY--  **  On this date, Barbie made her debut in 1959.  Though I never had one.

NATIONAL CRABMEAT DAY--  **  I loves my crab meat.  With cocktail sauce, of course.

NATIONAL MEATBALL DAY--  **  The bigger and juicier, the better.

GET OVER IT DAY--  **  Half way between Valentine's Day and April Fools' Day.  A good day to put past indignities behind you and move ahead.


MARCH 10

GENEALOGY DAY  (celebrated the first Saturday of March) --  **  Always good to know where you come from.

INTERNATIONAL BAGPIPE DAY--  **  I love the sound of bagpipes.  And, look forward to hearing some  in the near future for you-know-what day.

INTERNATIONAL FANNY PACK DAY--  Never had one, never wore one.  Too embarrassing.

SALVATION ARMY DAY--  **  One of the great organizations of the world.

LANDLINE TELEPHONE DAY--  **  We still have one.  I haven't yet figured out how to use it completely.  What chance do I have with one of those "Idge" phones?

Living In Today's World: Nobody Important On THAT Phone

The father has called his son saying he has a phone call.  The little son is walking into the room where his dad is holding the receiver of a landline telephone out to him.  Son:  ""It can't be anybody important if it's on that phone."

It's a Telephone Kind of Day

And these days, it is REALLY telephone as most everywhere, folks as young as 4 have phones sprouting out of their ears or permanently disfigured thumbs from all that texting.

But, anyway, 135 years ago, one Alexander Graham Bell spoke the words "Mr. Warson. Come here. I want to see you." And the rest, as they say, is history despite there is some question of whether Bell stole the phone from Elisha Gray.

In honor of the event, today, Bob Stroud featured the telephone on his Ten at Ten on WDRV in Chicago.
