Music Deaths: Howard Grimes Recorded with Al Green

HOWARD GRIMES

Died 12 February 2022

Drummer who recorded with Al Green and Ann Peebles.  

Very important in Memphis music.  Played sessions for Satellite Records which later became Stax.  Was tutored by Al Jackson Jr. of Booker T. & the MGs.  When Jackson died in 1975, took over as the  main drummer for Sta's house band, the Hi Rhythm Section.

Besides Green and Peebles, played with Otis Clay.  

Played on such landmark songs as Green's "Let's Stay Together" and Peebles' "I Can't Stand the Rain.

Had the nickname "Bulldog" for his ferocious style of playing.  

Booker T. & the MGs

Instrumental R&B band served as the house band for the influential soul label Stax Records.  Played with Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave.

Their biggest hit was "Green Onions" which went to #3 pop and #1 R&B in 1962.

The original members were Booker T. Jones on organ and piano, Steve Cropper on guitar, Donald "Duck" Dunn on bass and Al Jackson, Jr. on drums.

It was a racially integrated band with two white and two black members.  The name MGs came from Memphis Group.
