Music Deaths: Peter Fonda

PETER FONDA, 79

Died August 16, 2019

Okay, so he was an actor and not a musician, but he's listed here for his great movie "Easy Rider" and that wonderful soundtrack.

Not only that, but it was a great road trip movie as well, something I appreciate even more now that I have gotten into Route 66 and old roads.

Thanks, Peter.

50th Anniversary of Woodstock-- Part 1: Country Joe and Vietnam

August 15-18, 1969.

I am commemorating it right now by listening to the "Woodstock Soundtrack" on You Tube, that fantastic source of music that I use so much.  Last night, I was listening to and watching music and videos of performances from it on You Tube as well.

I also listened to part of the "East Rider" soundtrack once I learned of Peter Fonda's death.  That was a great road trip/music movie as well.

Last night, we met Kevin and Kelly at Sunnyside Tavern in Johnsburg and while watching a pitiful Bears exhibition (well, preseason) game (why do they even have those?) and the Cubs blow a perfectly-won game in the bottom of the ninth for the second time in a row (at least it wasn't a walk-off grand slam like last night), we got to reminiscing about Woodstock.  None of us were there, but it had impact.

We played songs on the jukebox, including "Living Next Door to Alice" by Smokie, only we have our own words to it.  Then, it was Country Joe & the Fish's Vietnam War ode "Fixin'-To-Die Rag" the Woodstock "Give me a __" version which we sang loudly and lustily.  Many of the other younger folks in the place had never heard it before.  They must be educated.

Original Motion Picture Soundtrack "National Lampoon's Animal House"

Alright, I'll have to include this here since I was doing Stephen Furst's obit.  Great music, both the originals and the new ones made for the movie.  And, of course, John Belushi.

It is too bad the movie came out after I was out of school as this album definitely would have been on our party  playlist.  And, tose Toga Parties!!  What a great idea.  We, Delta Sigma Phi, played four albums, front and back, at our parties:  Four Tops Greatest Hits, Temptations Greatest Hits, Sly & the Family Stone Greatest Hits and "Green River" by CCR.

Of course, this is in my Ultimate CD Jukebox.

Faber College Theme--  Elmer Bernstein
Louie, Louie--  John Belushi
Twistin' the Night Away--  Sam Cooke

Music Deaths: Stephen Furst "Animal House's" Flounder

STEPHEN FURST, 63

Died June 16, 2017

OK, he wasn't a singer, but he was on that great movie and soundtrack "National Lampoon's Animal House."  I regard that as the best movie ever made as it reminds me so much of my old fraternity, Delta Sigma Phi at Northern Illinois University.  Until the end, this was my fraternity.  We even had our own Bluto we called Czyck (pronounced Shike, long i)

Delta House was Delta Sig House.  Alright, we didn't cause a horse to have a hear attack in the dean's office.  Nor did we ever hve a Toga Party, but I'm sure we would have if we'd known about them.  And like Boone and the others, we really loved R&B music.  We were kind of the misfit frat at Northern, not as bad as the Delta Taus though.

Actor, film and television director.  His big break came in 1978 when he played Kent "Flounder" Dorfman on"National Lampoon's Animal House."  Then, the next year, he played the same character on the TV series "Delta House."

He played other roles on TV's "St. Elsewhere" and "Babylon 5."

Thanks for the Music, Harold Ramis-- Part 4: Ghostbusters, Stripes

Not only did he have those great movies, but he also was a big-believer in solid soundtracks.  If it was a Ramis movie, it had a great soundtrack.

Here are some more movies and soundtrack selections I particularly liked:

GHOSTBUSTERS

Ghostbusters (1984)--  Ray Parker, Jr. #1 for 3 weeks.  (And who doesn't holler out you know what when they ask the question?)
Cleaning Up the Town--  Bus Boys
Saving the Day--  Alessi Brothers
In the Name of Love--  Thompson Twins #1 US Dance/Club Play
I Can't Wait Forever--  Air Supply

Thanks for the Music, Harold Ramis-- Part 1: Meatballs, Caddyshack

I was saddened by the death of Harold Ramis last year.  His movies are among my most favorite, but they always featured great soundtracks.

I went through some of his movies and found the soundtracks and listened to the ones that I could.  These are some of the songs I really liked:

MEATBALLS:

Making It--  David Naughton #5
Good friend--  Mary MacGregor
Meatballs--  Rick Dees
Are You Ready for the Summer--  North Star Camp Kids Chorus

CADDYSHACK  1980

I'm Alright--  Kenny Loggins

Deaths: Sat. Night Fever-- Beatle Connection-- Throat Singing?

AL COURY, 78

Died August 8th. Long-time record exec with RSO Records responsible for success of "Saturday Night Fever" and "Grease" soundtracks. I liked and have both albums. The movies were great also. John Travolta could really get a music craze started back in the day. (Don't forget "Urban Cowboy.")

JACKIE LOMAX, 69.

Died September 15th. British singer who once had members of the Beatles singing backing vocals on his albums, but even so, never hit it big.

KONGAR-OL ONDAR, 51. Died July 25th. Master of throat singing from small Russian republic of Tuva. Recorded with Willie Nelson and Frank Zappa. Now, I'll have to find out what throat singing is.
