Eagles' "Greatest Hits 1971-1975" Tops "Thriller" as No. 1

"The Eagles' greatest hits album (which includes that Route 66 favorite 'Take It Easy" where he was 'Standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona) has moonwalked past Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' to become history's best-selling album of all-time in the U.S.."

The Recording Industry Association of America said the Eagles' album is  now certified 38x platinum, which means sales and streams of it have reached 39 million copies.  The album was released in 1976.

RIAA's platinum status was once equivalent to selling 1 million albums or singles, but in 2013, the company began incorporating streaming from YouTube, Spotify and other digital musical services.  Now 1,500 streams of an album is equivalent to an album sale.

The Eagles formed in Los Angeles in the early 1970s.  Co-founder Glenn Frey died in 2016.

By teh way, the Eagles' "Hotel California" is No. 3.

No Eagles (Well Maybe), But Two Deer

15.1 degrees here. A HEAT WAVE!!! //// We just got back from drives around the McHenry Dam and Morraine Hills state parks south of the City of McHenry, Illinois. We were looking for bald eagles, which we have heard are along the Fox River. We figured the dam would be a good place to start. We did see a dark object off in the distance on the other side of the river that may or may not have been an eagle. It was too far away. //// We then drove to nearby Morraine Hills State Park (formed by glaciers) and didn't see any eagles there, but we did see a pair of deer who also espied us, so we had a stareoff. My Top Three All-Time Eagles Songs

While on the subject of the Eagles, these are my top three favorites by that group, besides all of them.

1. TAKE IT EASY-- This was my 3rd favorite until we got into that whole Route 66 thing. You know, "Standing on the Corner in Winslow, Arizona." This town has taken full advantage of it with a display featuring a girl driving by on a flatbed Ford.

It was neat to stand there during their annual "Standing on the Corner" days and hearing a band play it live. Then, I heard it coming out of speakers of a souvenir store on that famous corner.

2. ALREADY GONE-- Dump me, I'll really show you!!

3. HEARTACHE TONIGHT-- An Eagles rocker if there ever was one and now, the name of a really fine Tribute Band.

Going Out to See the Eagles

Our annual bald eagle drive begins next week. Hopefully we will see some, but you never know. Last year was a bit disappointing as most were further south because of the extreme cold. And, it's been cold around here. I don't think we've had more than three days above freezing since the beginning of December. (I have a chest of ice out in the garage and there is still ice in it from our Bears party back on December 5th.

This year, we're planning on going out to Starved Rock down by the Illinois River for the first time. I hear there are a lot of eagles along with a nice bus tour to see them.

Then on to the Quad Cities, north on the Mississippi River to Dubuque, Iowa, and then back home after a stop in Galena.

Great Day for Eagle Watchin'

Yesterday, we drove the short distance from Clinton, Iowa, to the Quad Cities.

Our first stop was in Princeton along US-67. In the past, we've seen lots of eagles here, but today, just one. But this one was something else, perched on the tree by the Mississippi. We got some great shots, both video and camera, when a lady at the house by the tree came out and invited us to go out onto her deck for an even closer look. Was that ever nice.

We saw two others flying a short distance down river.

None were in LeClare, but as we got nearer to Bettendorf, we started to see more. We got a great shot of one just south of the I-80 bridge. Then, we hit the jack pot by the Bettendorf lock and dam. We must have seen at least 20 there.

The sky was the bluest blue, temps in the 30s and not much wind. Great eagle watching westher.

Annual Bald Eagle Trip: Da Tub-- Da Steakhouse-- Da Playoffs,--Part 2

In the past, we had to take these eagle trips according to school holidays, but NOT NO MORE!!! Being RETIRED certainly has its advantages. This used to be a three day trip, but now can go as long as we want it. It had to coincide with the MLK holiday.

The next day, Sunday, I went on the internet on their complimentary computer and sat in a barber chair to eat the complimentary breakfast. We went to the Don Q's pool/hot tub area. You can actually swim outside to the great wide open (today with snow still falling and sticking to the trees as nature does her painting). Stuck the toe into the poll and with a shiver said that that wasn't going to happen. We had the place to ourselves.

Always a treat, especially when we don't have to put up with screaming kids. For some reason, kids just start screaming whenever they hit the water. One nice thing about the Don Q is that the adults are usually in the fanta-suites and it is not likely they're going to be out and about. Then, with a $55 room rate for the regular ones, this is a great deal.

Went across the street at noon to Thym's Steakhouse which dates to the 1960s. This was their first time with breakfast buffet, and they did an outstanding job on it. The place was packed and plenty of delicious food. Wisconsin folk sure love their steakhouses.

Drove downtown Dodgeville and watched the Chargers upset the Colts and the Giants do the same with the much-hated Cowboys. Those were two big upsets.

Annual Bald Eagle Trip--Da Trolls, Da Q, DaPack-- Part 1

We just got back from a road trip out to the Mississippi River to see the bald eagles. We've been doing this for about ten years. You never know if you'll see any or not. One trip, we only saw one eagle. Other trips, we've seen 20-50.

These trips used to coincide with the three day Martin Luther King holiday, but, now, we can go anytime and stay as long as we like.

We took US-12 from Spring Grove all the way to Madison, Wisconsin. Then, we got on US-18/151 and went to Dodgeville, Wisconsin, stopping along the way at Mount Horeb where we drove the Trollway, ate at a Norwegian restaurant, and toured the Mustard Museum after being searched upon entering for any illegal condiments like mayonnaise and ketchup. We sang a rousing Poupon U fight songs to the tune of those from Univ. of Wisconsin and Notre Dame.

Mount Horeb was originally settled by Scandinavians, especially those from Norway. The whole length of the main street has carved wooden trolls.

Spent two nights at the unique Don Q Inn in Dodgeville. This is an amazing place with lots of heavy wooden beams in the three and a half story lobby, complete with barber chairs around a huge circular fireplace. The Q also features the fanta-suites, but we always stay in the regular rooms.

Drove into town and watched the Green Bay Packers start off horribly, but come back to bury the Seahawks. What better place to watch DaPack than in Da Cheesehead Land?
