Past Movie Scratches--  Movies I Saw in 2019.  Well since we are now in 2021 I figure this is as good of a time as any to finish 2019.

Let's see, it's Christmas time.  What possible movie could I be watching twice in a row?   No clue.

121.  A CHRISTMAS STORY--  12-25--  Mouth soap is a leading cause of blindness in kids.

122.  A CHRISTMAS STORY--  12-25--  The vaunted Triple Dog Dare.

123.  THE WIZARD OF OZ--  12-25--  How to kill a witch.  Drop a house on her or throw water at her.  Regardless, Dorothy is getting good at it.

124.  MALIFICENT--  12-25--  She was nicer than I thought.  People made her that way.  Mean old humans.

125.  THE GODFATHER II--  12-27--  We see Michael move the family and business to Nevada and attempt to go legit and how his dad became the Godfather.

126.  DESPICABLE ME 3--  12-27--  Gru meets his brother Bru as they battle Mullethead Brad, 80s child star gone bad.  Great 80s music and "The Dance Fight."

128.  STAR TREK--  12-28--   The prequel as we see how the gang got together.  "Are you out of your Vulcan mind?"

109.  MINIONS--  12-14--   How the Minions got to where they are now.  No laughing in the dungeon.  Bob, Kevin and Stuart save the Queen from Scarlett Overkill.

110.  STAR WARS: REVENGE OF THE SITH III--  12-16--  Aniken goes to the Dark Side and becomes Darth You-Know-Who.  Jedi wiped out except for Yoda and Obiwon Kenobe.

111.  STAR WARS:  A NEW HOPE IV--  12-17--  The original first episode.  "Help me, Obewon Kenobi, you're my only what?"  That really cool bar scene with all those derelicts and great music.  "I've got a what about this?"

112.  STAR WARS:  THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK V--  12-18--  "A long time ago in a galaxy what?"  The battle in the snow.  We meet Yoda.  "Your worship."   Han and Leia sitting in a tree.  "I am your father."

113.  STAR WARS:  RETURN OF THE JEDI VI--  12-19--  Jabba the big slug that laughs way too much.  It's all about your destiny.  Luke finds the good in his father after much effort.

114.   STAR TREK:  BEYOND--  12-20--  The crew's all together now.  Versus the Bee Swarm  "Let's make some noise!"

79.  HALLOWEEN--  10-30--  Yes, Tommy.  There is a boogey man and his name is Michael.  A fixated lad and just the film to watch the day before his Holiday.

80.  AVATAR--  11-4--  It's whites vs. Indians in space.  "I see you."  Do you see me?  Amazing cgi.

81.  GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY--  11-9--  Great movie and great music from a CASSETTE!!  I am a big cassette fan.  I still record on cassettes.

82.  HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE--  11-11--  You just got to hate President Snow.  I don't even like him on those orange juice commercials now.  Then, there is that laughing, laughing mc.  

83.  STAR TREK--  11-16--  How it all began.  Everybody meets everybody.  Who said, "Are you out of your Vulcan mind?"  "Who said, "I've got your gun?"  Young Spock meets old Spock.

84.  FORREST GUMP--  11-23--  Stupid is as stupid does.  "And, that's all I have to say about that."  Too bad they are going to have to change the name of the movie because someone was named after a Confederate general and some people have hissy fits when they see that.

JSIS-- Just Some Interesting Stuff. //// 1. SPOCK-- Leonard Nimoy's health is deteriorating rapidly at age 82 with chronic obstruction pulmonary disease from smoking, even though he quit 30 years ago. I'm a big Star Trek fan. Sorry to hear that. 2. FOX-- The "Michael J. Fox Show" has been cancelled by NBC after 16 episodes, although 22 were filmed (and may be shown later). I watched it, but just hadn't gotten into it most episodes, although the one with the blind guy was hilarious. I see they also cancelled "Sean Saves the World" which I didn't watch. However, I do like NBC's new "Chicago P.D." ans "Chicago Fire" just keeps getting better. ///// 3. G.I. JOE-- Happy 50th birthday to the world's first action figure, G.I. Joe, who turns 50 this year. It weathered the Vietnam War for Hasbro. His "father" is considered to be Don Levine who created the 11 1/2 inch figure with 21 moving parts. He sold for $4 when he hit the store shelves just in time for Christmas 1964. I never had a G.I. Joe, but I sure had lots of H&O scale soldiers as well as the bigger ones in the Blue and Gray battle sets and others. //// JSIS. --Roaddog

Star Trek in the Dorm Room Back in 1969

I don't think I had ever watched the TV show "Star Trek" when it aired, but things changed in the fall of 1969 after I got to Lincoln Hall at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

My roommate was Chuck from a small town near Peoria and he had a little 12-inch black and white TV. Only one other room on the 24-room dorm floor (3rd floor A Wing if I remember) had a TV other than one in the meeting room in the middle.

Every night after dinner, Chuck and I would go back to our room and I would commence reading my copy of the Chicago Daily News that my parents had subscribed for me and right at 6 PM (or was it 7 PM?) the number of occupants in the room would jump to anywhere from ten to sixteen. There'd be guys sitting everywhere, four across the edges of the bunk beds. You couldn't walk across the floor.

WGN, Channel 9, would have a rerun of Star Trek at that time. I became a "Trekkie" at the time. (But watching the old episodes now, I have to admit they were probaby the worst acted things since "The Lone Ranger.) We would all watch intently and have discussions about it afterwards before the all-night card games would get started. Hearts being the favorite.
