Tune into Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM, today from 9 to noon CDST as Bob Stroud takes a trip way back, fifty years ago to be exact, to play the songs on your radio and in your record collection from June 2, 1974.

This is the first part of his four-part trip back to the Summer of '74.  He will also visit that day the first Sunday in July, August and September.

The station will also air it again from 9 pm to midnight.  And it streams over the internet.

Where Were You August 31, 1974?-- Part 1

Yesterday, Bob Stroud at Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM, had his last of four parts of music from the summer of 1974, 40 years ago.  This is something I eagerly look forward to hearing every summer since 2007, when he went back to the Summer of Love, 1967.  To say the least, the shows take me back.

August 31, 1974, I was beginning my second year of teaching at John T. Magee Middle School in Round Lake, Illinois.  I was driving a '73 Pinto back and forth between our new apartment (two bedrooms) in Vernon Hills.

Liz was still working at General Finance Corporation home office in Evanston, bit still looking for a teaching job.

These were tunes we listened to on our daily weekday commutes.

Yesterday, Bob Stroud did his annual trip back to a summer forty years ago.  That would be 1974 in this case.

August 3, 1974, was in the summer after my first year of teaching and one where Liz and I moved from one apartment in Des Plaines to another in Vernon Hills, Illinois.  This was so I could be closer to school in Round Lake.  Liz was still looking for a job teaching with no luck.  She was working as a secretary at General Finance Corporation's home office in Evanston, Illinois, right by Northwestern's Dyche Stadium, so her drive got considerably longer.

Welcome Summer...1974-- Part 1

OK, that would be summer back forty years ago and Bob Stroud started his annual summer trip back 40 years ago on his Rock and Roll Roots program on Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM.  He started doing this for the Summer of Love,1967,  in 2007 and has done it every year since then.

Lots of music and stuff to take you right back to those times.

The Summer of '74 I had just finished teaching my first year in Round Lake, Illinois.  I had 7th, 8th and 9th graders and taught geography and history.  There were two classes of 9th grade geography, one class of 8th grade history, two classes of 7th grade geography and one 8th grade geography.  I especially liked the 8th grade history, which was my major area in education.

I had always intended on teaching high school kids and getting used to junior high was trying to say the least.  I still wasn't too fond of the 7th and 8th graders, but did like my freshmen.
