Who Sang It Better? "This Old Heart of Mine"

WNCT, 1070 AM out of Greenviille, North Carolina, Beach, Boogie & Blues, has a voting item.

You can listen to three versions of the song:  Isley Brothers, Rod Stewart and a third one by an Isley brother and Stewart.  However, the one by Rod Stewart by himself is much slower than the one he had a hit with back in the day.

I, of course, voted for the original singers, the Isley Brothers.  Surprisingly, the duo version is winning.

One More Day of All Those Horrible Political Ads

The election is, thankfully, tomorrow.  This has been the worst-ever political campaigning in Illinois.  To hear the commercials, all candidates should be jailed for the horrible crimes they have committed against humanity.

And, the new Dirty Words are "Career Politician."  Man, if you're a "CAREER POLITICIAN" you are some kind of bad.

It is too bad that the candidates don't concentrate on what they plan to do instead of attacking their opponents.

As far as Illinois' two major jobs up for grabs this Tuesday, governor and U.S. Senator, I don't like any of them.  But, unfortunately, they are the only ones with a chance of winning.  I have to find the lesser of the two evils in each contest.  Perhaps they run their ads with that as the theme.  "I am not as bad as the other guy."

Let the Fur Fly-- Part 4: It's Victor E. Huskie vs. Southpaw

This past month, the Chicago Tribune has been running a Sweet 16 contest involving Chicago area mascots which has brought a lot of voting from interested parties.  Now, there are just two left for the championship and Tribune backing for inclusion in the National Mascot Hall of Fame when it opens.

And, now, the sixteen mascots are down to just two: Southpaw of the Chicago White Sox and Victor E. Huskie of NIU.  Normally, I would vote for Southpaw as I am a big White Sox fan, but not when he's up against my old school.

We find out tomorrow who is the top Chicagoland mascot.

When I voted earlier this week, the voting stood at Victor E. Huskie 59.08% and Southpaw 40.92%.

You can vote at www.chicagotribune.com/mascotpoll.

A Very Hairy Civil War

The September 2011 Smithsonian Magazine had a short blurb on voting they had going on at the time for the Best Facial Hair of the Civil War and a picture of George Crook who had an all-time great set of mutton chops, or, at least I think that's what you call them.  At the time, Ambrose Burnside had received the most votes with 18,385.  He is where we get the term "Sideburns" and had over double the votes of #2, J.E.B. Stuart.

They had a site to cast your vote and it was still up and they are still taking votes.  I had to vote for the Fort Fisher guy, Adelbert Ames.

They have about 30 Civil War people to vote for and most of them are mighty interesting as far as facial hair.  Give it a look and vote:

November 3rd Surf Top Vote-Getters in Beach Music

Went to the website yesterday, while listening to Uncle Billy Smith on the Surf broadcasting out of North Myrtle Beach, SC, (while I sat here in Spring Grove, Illinois--Ain't the internet grand?). I checked out the top ten vote-getters which they use to determine the top Beach Music songs for the week. Listeners do the voting, then they take the results and use it to compile the top thirty songs.

I'd have to say that some of the groups have their fans doing lots of voting after seeing the top ten.

Here they are:

1. Outta Control-- Doug Winstead
2. A Little Meat on the Side-- Sea Cruz
3. Let it Roll-- Sea Cruz
4. You've Got Me Working Day & Night-- Carousel
5. Walk Away from Love-- Sea Cruz
6. Baby There's Something-- Magnificents
7. Wherever I Lay My Hat-- Magnificents
8. Sweet Charle Babe-- Rachel Tripp
9. Emperor of My Baby's Heart-- Paul Craver
10.A Little Bit of Money-- Coastline Band

Vote for Preservation

I covered this in the other blog, but, American Express has put up $1 million to fund preservation projects on 25 different sites in the Chicagoland area.

The only catch is that you have to vote to determine who gets what. Only the top vote-getters will get this money.

A place in Chinatown is in the lead with 14% of the vote. Two other Frank Lloyd Wright sites are rapidly moving up. They are obviously very organized.

I'm backing four sites, two around here and two along the Lincoln Highway.

Around here: the Spring Grove Fish Hatchery and the Petersen Historic Farmstead in McHenry.

Lincoln Highway: the 1893 Viking ship from the Columbian Exposition in Geneva, and the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) Hall in Aurora.

You can vote for as many as you like once a day until October 10th.
