Yesterday, we drove to Woodstock, Illinois for the rededication of a 100-year-old Union Civil War monument in the historical town square. About 25 people attended the ceremony which was led by the town's mayor.
There is a goal to raise $10,000 for repairs after the monument has been out in the elements for all those years. It was built with funds raised by the Women's Relief Organization, an auxiliary of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization made up of veterans of the Union Army in the Civil War.
Enjoyed a walk around the square and the great nostagia store with more neat stuff than I've ever seen assembled in one place.
Today, we went to Antioch and visited with a friend who we haven't seen for a long time. Then, we had the biggest basket of fries I've ever seen at the Sequoit Lodge on Main Street. Played NTN as well.

Then drove to Hello Folks in Fox Lake and played NTN with three top twenties and finished up at the American Legion.
Being an account of some things I'm interested in, what I'm doing, and reflections on my past, especially music.

Da Bears and Da Bars-- Part 2
November 1st, we went to Baja Benny's to join our usual crew of Bear fans. We've been watching games there since about 1990. mostly with the same group. Back then, it was called Costello's and owned by our friends Frank and Sharon. Great view of Fox Lake and we had kept our boat there back when it was another bar.
During warmer weather we watch games out on the deck.
They have free popcorn, free salsa and chips, and free hot dogs with the trimmings at half time. Every Bear YD or sack gets a shot of "juice," an alcoholic concoction, always accompanied by shouts of "Juice! Juice! Juice!!" Also, $5 pitchers and $12 buckets of 5 bottles.
Much better game despite a slow start when $30 million man Jay was doing his three and out thing. Everyone agreed this was the most boring game ever. However, it was "Sweetness Day" at Soldiers Field so lots and lots of Number 34 jerseys.
Great victory though and Lovie finally used Garrett Wolfe at running back, on my opinion the superior of Forte (and NIU grad).
Went to Cross Inn afterwards and bought a couple of the Miller Lite Bears souvenir pints featuring Dick Butkus and Gayle Sayers. The next two monthly editions will be Richard Dent and the Sweetness. They have buckets of six bottles for $10.

Da Bears and Da Bars
These past two weeks we've seen the Bears not play a game (Cincinnati) and beat up a much worse team (Cleveland) with difficulty at first.
Either way, we hit plenty of bars both Sundays.
On the 25th, after going to Stade's Shades of Autumn and watching them fire the pumpkin gun, we went to the Rusty Nail in Ringwood for a drink. This was before the disaster, but enjoyed their 75 cent 14 oz beer. They also have half price appetizers and $2.50 frozen pizzas.
Then, around the corner we went to O'Leary's and watched the Bears not play in the first quarter. No real good specials here.
Watched most of the debacle at Chopper's up on Il-173 in Antioch. Horrible game, but good deals with 25 cent wings and $4 pitchers. At least there was something good about that long, long game.

And They Didn't Run Out of Warsteiner-- Oktoberfest 2009-- Part 1
I've been enjoying one of my favorite celebrations of the year, Oktoberfest. Great music (Oompah!!), food, beer, and friends.
The five-disc CD player is now stocked with five German Oktoberfest albums which I've been listening to, getting in the mood.
Oct. 3rd, I was at Fox Lake's Oktoberfest. No German food, but the three-piece Alpiners were walking around playing various "Oom-pah" selections. Would have been better if they had the full group on stage and been amplified. However, the New Invaders playing great sixties songs made up for it. When was the last time you heard a band covering "Shapes of Things" by Max Frost & the Troopers?
I then played some "Oom-pah" music at Rick's 60th birthday party.

A Good Weekend Until Sunday
Enjoyed it despite the worsening weather, capped by the cold, overcast, snow flurries, and bluster of Sunday, and Da Bear Loss to Tennessee.
FRIDAY-- Met buddy Kip for breakfast, played NTN at Hello Folks in Fox Lake and saw an excellent movie called "The Changeling" at the FL Theatre.
SATURDAY-- Went to the Marine Corps Birthday celebration in the morning at the American Legion in Fox Lake and drove to Schaumburg for Bob Stroud's Record Release Party at the Borders with all those great 60s-70s Chicago groups.
Then, we went to six places, five of them new to us, to play NTN in the Northwest suburbs, paid $2.28 (cheapest gas in a long time) for gas in Barrington after almost putting diesel in the Malibu (Duh!) and had a McRib at McDonald's in Wauconda while being entertained by the local junior high folk.
SUNDAY-- Listened to the CMT Country Music Countdown USA Show and Bob Stroud featured Creedence "Covered" Revival songs on his Rock and Roll Roots Show on the Drive in honor of what would have been Tom Fogerty's 67th birthday.
Then went to Baja Benny's to watch Da Bears-Tennessee game. The place was packed and had a hard time getting a seat. Da Bears could definitely have won this one, but for poor play selection and Da Grossman's inconsistent play.
Watched the great Animation Domination on Fox: Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy, and American Dad. Also The Unit on CBS.
I will make separate entrees on the Marine Corps breakfast, Record Release Party, and NTNing.

Another Great Day Here in the Midwest
Yesterday was another day to savor.
I was OD as in Out on the Deck in the morning both soaking up rays and typing away on the old 'put.
Voted, then drove to Crystal Lake and had my final appointment with the doctor who operated on my thumb back in June. She said I didn't have to come back anymore with the great improvement. Great news.
On the way back, decided to stop at Joey T's Italian restaurant in McHenry for lunch. They are on a channel to the Fox River. We were happy to see their patio was open and took advantage of al fresco dining. How about that, eating outside on November 4th and nor freezing?
Great food (even beter with a $7 off coupon) and what a view of the boats, new and very expensive townhomes ($400,000 plus) across the channel and that beautiful new pedestrian bridge across it. Plus, listening to Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra sing in the sun and warm breezes.
Great food as well.

Out on Deck-- Again
Wouldn't it be great if all our winters here in the Midwest were like this? Typing this out right now as the temp hovers in the low 70s and full sun.
This morning, while carrying the garbage out for pickup, I noticed the front of the house had a lot of color with the golden barberries (hate those thorns) a golden orange, the sedum in colors and the five burning bushes putting on quite the display, Also, the yellow, purple, orange, and red mums.
Going for hopefully the last appointment with the doctor who operated on my thumb, and, of course, have to vote today. I also need to pick up the boat from the marina where it was winterized.
Yesterday, we washed most of the windows and found that several screens need replacing. I guess that is to be expected after being in the house for just shy of 16 years now. We moved in over Thanksgiving weekend 1992.
Tomorrow looks like another great day.

The Blooz Brothers
Last night, I went to the final It's Thursday party in Antioch, Illinois, to see the great Blooz Brothers Band put on a show. There is a four man horn section, bass and lead guitarists, drummer, and organist along with Jake and Elwood.
The whole pavillion seating area was packed. Hey, it was free. Hard to beat that these days.
The band played one song, then there were all these flashing lights and sirens as several of Antioch's finest "escorted" the Bloozmobile (replete with a huge speaker on the top) into the parking lot.
Jake and Elwood then made a mad dash up to the stage, uncuffed the brief case, and proceeded into "Everybody Needs Somebody" after thanking Antioch's law enforcement. They played several Blues Brothers songs as well as one Doobie Brothers and Sly's "Thank You Fa Lettin' Me B'Myself."
Unfortunately, I saw them covering the control booth and a few minutes later, Elwood said that a storm was about ten minutes out and we should start preparing, but the show would go on. Not having rain gear and not liking to get rained on, I left with heavy heart. I was having a really good time.
