Drinkin' and Eatin' on the Cheap

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 6

I must remember to always put the checkbook in the same place.  Whenever I don't, it goes on the "lam" for awhile.  Like it is right now.

Met Kevin and Kelly at Half-Times in Johnsburg, Illinois, and enjoyed the $1 Lite pints and the $11.50 (half price) slab of ribs, fried and garlic bread meal.

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7

Hey, Half-Times has $1 Lite drafts and half price pizza, sandwiches and ribs Monday to Thursday until the end of February.  I have to take advantage of ths deal.  I was back again.

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 8

I found the wayward checkbook and put it where I always do.  Let's see how long  remember to do this.  Went to Donovan's in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, and played live trivia with Kevin, Kelly and a host of others.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 9

Met Kevin and Kelly at Bulldog Ale House in McHenry, Illinois.  They have their old special back.  Any of their draft beer pints for $2.  And, that includes domestic, import and craft beer.  That's talking my language.  Plus, 89 cent chicken tenders.

Getting My Music On-- Part 1: Soul Asylum and Cover Bands (CCR and Eagles)

Right now listening to my Grave Dancers Union CD by Soul Asylum.

Tomorrow, they will be playing at Lake in the Hills, Illinois' Sunset Park as part of their Ribfest Festival. I remember them as having a big hit back in the 1990s with "Runaway Train." The back cover says 1992, so I was right. I also really liked their "Somebody to Shove."

Let someone cut into the rib line....

The second cut was good also. I don't know about the cover art, though.

Anyway, they cap off two Tribute Bands during the late afternoon, early evening: Fortunate Sons (CCR) and Heartache Tonight (Eagles). And then, there is all that great corn on the cob and, of course ribs. Should be a great day.

And, at $5 a head to get in. Great Deal. Of course, hopefully, we'll be able to afford the gas which really spiked around here yesterday!!

Anchovies and House Dressings

Whenever I go into a new restaurant and get a salad, I always inquire as to a possible house dressing. If they have one, I order it. You never know what you'll get. Some were real dogs, but many superb.

One place I used to like to go to, but can't hardly afford anymore (plus they're too far away in these days of GRB gas prices) was Carson's, the place known for their ribs, a well-deserved reputation.

We ate several times at the flagship place in Chicago. I found out their house dressing was anchovy-based. After a momentary pause, I dove right into it and ordered it on the salad. Anchovies be damned, full speed ahead!!

I got the salad and forked right into it. Hey, that's mighty good!! Actually, you didn't much taste it, but the anchovies were a nice addition.

Rain, Hostas, and Ribfest Yesterday

Yesterday, I did a Japanese beetle sweep in a light drizzle and then planted three new hostas and about eight others that I divided.

We went over to Kevin and Kelly's, who have the place on Fox Lake for Ribfest. They are the ones who also have the End-of-the-Year party every June (they are both teachers) and the 4th of July fireworks party as they are right across the water from where they shoot them off).

We played tag for awhile with the rain that would start, causing us to move inside, stop, and we're back out, start again and move again, until we finally gave up and just stayed inside.

Kelly made up both beef long ribs and pork short ones. Unfortunately, by the time we got around to eating, we were all too full of snacking, so didn't eat anything as much as we wanted. We'll blame it on Jim and Arlene, who, when they arrived, had more snacks than you could believe. We also had corn-on-the-cob, jambalaya, pasta salad, beans, and cornbread. Kelly makes up some mighty good ribs, right up there with Bob's.

This was a primarily Irish crowd, so we listened to the Gleasons, a great Irish rock band out of Milwaukee, and a lot of other Irish music. Plus, a whole lot of the people were originally, or still living in, Brooklyn, NY.

We were having Ribfest in honor of John, a NY City police sergeant. He had some stories about the aftermath of 9-11 where he helped in the cleanup. I will write about one on the other blog
roaddogsroadlog.blogspot.com. We also had Jim's brother and wife from New York with us. They had just flown in a few hours earlier.
