Two Bands, Five Bars, Yard Work and a History Meeting

FRIDAY, MAY 17

We met Kevin and Kelly at a new place on the Chain of Lakes called Fam's.  It used to be Korpan's Landing for a long time and is at Kamikazee Alley where Nippersink and Fox lakes come together.  Liz and I split a fish fry for $9.99 which had more than enough for both of us.

We then went over to Whiskey Waters on State Park Road and had a good time listening to the band Aging Teen Idols playing our kind of music.

FRIDAY, MAY 18

I went to the Fox Lake Historical Society meeting in the morning, then worked in the yard.  That night, Liz and I went to Stucky's in Johnsburg and had a good time with Uncle Will playing the guitar.  We spent the early part of his show doing protest songs from the sixties.

FRIDAY, MAY 19

Went back to Stucky's for their breakfast buffet, $8.99 for seniors including coffee or tea and made-to-order omelets.  After yard work, we went to Sunnyside and had a great time with the juke box and watching the Cubs game.

A PLETHORA OF TIDBITS:  Actress Marilyn Monroe colored her hair using a shade of blond called dirty pillow slip.

WLS Top 40 for March 10, 1969-- Part 1: "Aquarius / Let the Sunshine In"

The top 40 songs in Chicago fifty years ago.  How's that for a slice of life?  (D) means DEBUT.  The number after the artist is the highest the song got on Billboards Top 100.

40.  AQUARIUS / LET THE SUNSHINE IN--  Fifth Dimension    (D)     #1   Takes me right back to Senior Lounge at Palatine High School in Palatine and that great juke box as we were finishing up senior year.   Their biggest hit.   Medley from "Hair."

39.  JOHNNY ONE TIME--  Brenda Lee    (D)     #41    Never heard it before.  Sounds more pop than country.    Her 49th (of 52) Top 100.   Her first Top 100 was "One Step At a Time" in 1957    #43.

38.  YOU'VE MADE ME SO VERY HAPPY--  Blood, Sweat & Tears   (D)    #2  Or do you say BST?  Love those horns.  Their first hit, and the first of three consecutive #2s.  Like CCR, they just never could crack it to #1.

37.  HAIR--  Cowsills   (D)     #2    A real Hippy song.    #40 and this one from the movie of the same name.   Family group from Newport, Rhode Island.

36.  GALVESTON--  Glen Campbell    (D)      #4    Such a young Glen.  Was Galveston a person or place or maybe both?   The pride of Billstown, Arkansas.

Definitely a lot of big debuts this week.

"Hair"

Pat Dailey at Skeeter's in Carpentersville, Illinois, October 3, 2015-- Part 1

We drove the miles to Carpentersville, hitting most every one of the many, many stoplights along Illinois Highway 31 and 22 on red, so it took considerably longer to get there than we had planned.  But, fortunately, we had left in plenty of time, expecting a huge crowd there, especially since we knew parking would be very limited.

Plenty of parking when we arrived, an hour before Pat Dailey was to start at 4 p.m..  Tickets cost $10 each with part of the proceeds going to breast cancer research.  This was not a nice day to have an outside concert.  Overcast, threatening rain and a bit cool.  We waited in the adjacent Tiki Bar for the start of the concert.

Skeeter's Saloon used to be a house and a bar was built in the garage, so it is very small.  It is primarily a biker bar.

I was impressed with the juke box in the Tiki Bar as it was one that played CDs, something you don't much see anymore.  Even better was 2 plays for $1 or 5 for $2. The new ones you see these days have a much larger selection, but most songs are $1 for one except a small number of 2 for $1 ones.

Another guy in there was playing lots of John Denver and Beach Boys.  I had him put on the "Rodeo Song" and the "I-95 Song" which got a lot of others to singing.  And, of course, "You Never Even Call Me By My Name."
