Round Lake, Crawdads, Johnny's and Two Legions

THURSDAY, AUGUST 4 

Liz and I went to Round Lake for our dentist appointment and Liz's haircut.  Drove around the old spots; we lived there for 17 years.  We were hoping to stop for those delicious Charcoburgers  at the Ingleside Dog 'N Suds, but it was way too hot to eat outside.

I saw the movie "Where the Crawdads Sing" at the Fox Lake Theatre.  Later we went to the McHenry American Legion for drinks and karaoke.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 5

Met Kevin and Kelly at Johnny's Cafe in Fox Lake, Illinois, and then went to the Fox Lake American Legion.

Trivia, Dog N' Suds and American Pop Standards-- Part 1

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 18th

Went to Donovan's Reef in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin and played live trivia with Professor Jeffie and enjoyed the half price drinks.  Had a half-price burger at Bricks 'N Ivy in Spring Grove, Illinois.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 19TH 

Because of the recent storms, I had to cut the grass for the first time in three weeks.  

Went to Dog 'N Suds on Ingleside, Illinois for their 2 for $4 Charcoburger special and washed it down with a large root beer.  There are only seven of these old eating places left in the United States and we have three of them within 25 miles of us.  The other two are in Richmond and Grayslake, Illinois.  They, of course, still have the gal come out to your car with the food and put the tray on your window.  

This is real old-school eating.

I then went to the last It's Thursday concert in Antioch, Illinois, and saw Peter Oprisko do his show of American Pop Standards by such folks as Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin,  He had an eight piece Big Band backing him.

Stopped at McDonald's on the way home for a Coke Slushie.

A Trip Back Kind of Weekend-- Part 1: Boating, Dog 'B Suds and Concert in the Park

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28

Took the boat out for a slow cruise around Mineola Bay in Fox Lake, then the west shore of Fox lake,through Kamikaze Alley and along the south shore of Nippersink Lake to Beer Can Bridge and then back.

Drove over to Dog 'N Suds in Ingleside and had those great Charcoburgers (2 for $3 and washed it down with a frosted glass mug of their great root beer and bought a couple Charcoburgers home to Liz.  Dog 'N Suds still has curb service, a real trip back.

We then drove into McHenry and went to the PLAV for a couple cocktails before walking over to Veterans Park to see the band Miles Over Mountains (bluegrass/folk music).  A really fine band to end the Concerts in the Park summer season.

Then back to the PLAV for a drink and then over to Sunnyside Tavern in Johnsburg for the Bears-Packers party (Thursday Night Football).  The place was packed and the Bears were very very sad, and completely outclassed.  We came home.

Labor Day Weekend 2015-- Part 1

We kicked off our Labor Day weekend on Thursday.

THURSDAY, SEPT. 3RD:  After cutting the grass, we paid our $4,931 property taxes.  And, that is only half of our taxes!!  Ouch!  We then went boating and stopped at the Dog 'N Suds in Ingleside for some Charcoburgers and mugs o' root beer.  There are only about seven left in the U.S. and we have three of them within twenty miles of us.  Then went to Sunnyside Tavern.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 4TH:  Went to McHenry and bought some flowers on sale at Wal-Mart and Home Depot.  After yardwork, I went boating and then to the Johnsburg-Mendota High School football game.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 5TH:  Put up our NIU Huskies stuff for our game vs. UNLV later tonight.  We went to the Legion and saw the excellent band called the 3 Aces playing 50s-60s and country in the afternoon.  Then went to Sunnyside in Johnsburg.  Met the man who now owns the old Hatch Farm in Spring Grove there.  Fred Hatch is credited with making the first agricultural silo in the world.  Came home and watched NIU win the game in a close one.  Then enjoyed our Margaritaville bar in the basement and my ultimate jukebox while watching other college games.

About Last Weekend-- Part 2: Looking for the Plug, Bobby's Barrel and Dog 'N Suds

SATURDAY, JUNE 20TH:  Did yardwork in the afternoon after calling West Marine and Skipper Bud's looking for a drain plug for the boat.  We found that it is missing and any boater knows that if you put your boat in without one, your boat will sink.  Kind of an essential piece of equipment.  Decided to get one at Skipper Bud's in Volo.

Drove there, but their parts department closed for the day, so were unable to get the plug.  Stopped at Bobby's Barrel Inn in Volo since we were there as we haven't been there for a long time.  Had excel;lent meals.  Then went to Dog 'N Suds in Ingleside where they were having a 50s-60s band, the Affects, playing outside along with a parking lot full of classic cars.  Kind of a neat, retro thing to do.  Met some old friends there, but left as the drizzle started getting a bit heavier.

Went to the Lagoon Lounge, dating to the 1950s as well and while there, it really started pouring.  We've had a very rainy season so far.  The Hat Guys were supposed to be playing at Fox Lake's Lakefront Park on Nippersink Lake, but had been rained out, so went to Sunnyside Tap in Johnsburg, where the rains continued.  Kind of strange being there with no Blackhawk game.
