John Fogerty's Birthday Today

And I didn't even know it until Bob Stroud devoted his Ten at Ten on Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM, The Drive to John Fogerty music, both with that band (my favorite all-time band) and solo.

Born May 28, 1945, making him four days and six years older than me.

These are the songs Stroud played:

TEN AT TEN

Proud May

Bad Moon Rising  (For many years the ringtone on my phone.)

Down on the Corner

Old Man Down the Road

Who'll Stop the Rain  (I remember waking up on race day at the Indy 500 at the opening at 6 am and they started with this song when rain was expected.)

Centerfield

Fortunate Son

Rock and Roll Girls

Have You Ever Seen the Rain

Change in the Weather

WLS Top 25 for Week of February 12, 1973-- Part 3: 'Dancing in the Moonlight'

*  Means the song was climbing the charts.  The number after the artist is how high the song got on the Billboard Hot 100 National Chart.

15.  JAMBALAYA (ON THE BAYOU)--  Blue Ridge Rangers      #16     But you might know them better as John Fogerty.  Where's Creedence?  Ol' Hank would be so proud.  This was a #1 country hit in1952 for Hank Williams.

14.  LAST SONG--  Edward Bear    #3       Little did I know this was the name of a band, not a solo performer.   Pop trio from Toronto, Canada.

13.  DANCING IN THE MOONLIGHT--  King Harvest      #13     Takes me right back to 1973.  At this time I was getting ready to start student teaching in my senior year at NIU.  Their one and only Top 40 hit.

12.  YOUR MAMA DON'T DANCE--  Loggins & Messina      #4      Gotta love this song.  Their only Top Ten as a duo.

11.  ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH--  John Denver       #9      We could sure use another John Denver about now.  Was that David Crosby in the audience at the beginning of the video for the Wildlife Concert?

Songs for Opening Day: 'Centerfield'

The Chicago Cubs opened their 2022 season today at home in Wrigley Field.  Definitely a pretty crummy day for it.  Out here in the burbs we have 41 degrees and a light rain.  And, the only way to see the game on TV is to pay their crummy Marque cable station.  So, I will pull for the Cubs, but won't see many games.

Anyway, good ol' Bob Stroud had his Ten at Ten on baseball for some reason.

1.  CENTERFIELD--  John Fogerty

2.  GLORY DAYS--  Bruce Springsteen

3.  PARADISE BY THE DASHBOARD LIGHT--  Meatloaf

4.  MRS.  ROBINSON--  Simon & Garfunkel

5.  WE DIDN'T START THE FIRE--  Billy Joel

6.  THE BOYS OF SUMMER--  Don Henley

7.  NA NA HEY HEY KISS HIM GOODBYE--  Steam  White Sox organist Nancy Faust started this.

8.  BACK WHEN MY HAIR WAS SHORT--  Gunhill Road

9.  YOUR LOVE--  The Outfield

10.  GO CUBS GO--  Steve Goodman

It will repeat tonight at 10 PM, CDST.

Thanks, Bob.  Pretty good lineup.  I'm In the Mood for Some Baseball Been Very Good to Me.  --RoadBall

WLS Top 30 Songs for Week of February 8, 1971-- Part 2: 'Mr. Bojangles'

Fifty years ago in Chicago on the Big 890 AM.  *  means the song was climbing the charts.  The number after the artist is how high it got on the Billboard Hot 100 National Charts.

25.  ME AND BOBBY McGEE--  Janis Joplin     #1    The 26-year-o;d white girl could sure sing the Blues with the best of them.  Her only song to crack the Top 40.  This song was first done by Roger Miller in 1969. Check her out in the Dick Cavett show video doing "To Love Somebody."

24.  PROUD MARY--  Ike & Tina Turner      #4    Their biggest hit while together.    That John Fogerty song and those wonderful back-up singers, the Ikettes.  How did those dresses stay up?

23.  HANG ON TO YOUR LIFE--  Guess Who     #43     Not one of their better known songs, but this one sure does rock the house.  A real good opening riff.

22.  MR. BOJAMGLES--  Nitty Gritt Dirt Band     #9    After twenty years, he was still grieving.    The song's writer, Jerry Jeff Walker just died recently.  One person's comment said that he got banned from playing the jukebox...after he played this 26 times in a row.

21.  1900 YESTERDAY--  Liz Damon's Orient Express    #33     I don't remember it at all.   Soft Rock band from Hawaii.

Name That Tune (from the above songs):  "We Never Ever Do Anything Nice And Easy."  Answer below.  --RoadDog

50th Anniversary of Woodstock-- Part 2: And There Won't Be A Woodstock 50

From the August 7, 2019, Chicago Tribune "The 'bizarre trip' that was almost Woodstock 50" by Mesfin Fekadu, AP.

That's what the original Woodstock organizer Michael Lang had to say about his efforts to have another one on the 50th anniversary of the original.  "It's been a really bizarre trip."

Lang, now 74 was going to have No. 50 with all-star acts like Jay-Z, Dead & Company and the Killers and it was to be in Watkins Glen, some 115 miles northwest of where the original was held.  It just didn't work out.   His financial backing pulled out.

Melanie, known as the first lady of Woodstock, was scheduled to perform for Woodstock 50, but figured things were going bad when she couldn't get in touch with Lang.

However, she will be performing at WE 2019 in North Carolina over two August weekends.  Some of the others appearing there will be Canned Heat, Jefferson Starship, Ten Years After, Jon Sebastion,  Vanilla Fudge and Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels.

The Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, New York, on the site of the original Woodstock, will be having a celebration during the anniversary August 15-18, featuring performances by Ringo Star, Santana and John Fogerty (CCR).

It's A Creedence Thing For Me: "Lodi" and CCR Getting Back Together?

I was listening to Bob Stroud's Rock and Roll Roots just a little while ago, 7 am to 10 am Sundays on WDRV, 93.1 FM, Chicago, the Drive, something I do most every Sunday (I record Terri Hemmert's Breakfast With the Beatles, 8 to 10 am on Chicago's WXRT, 93.1 FM on my cassette tapes to listen to during the week.)

Anyway, Stroud played "Lodi" by Creedence Clearwater Revival and that song, of course, perked up my ears and is one that really takes me back to my college days because it was my fraternity's song (Delta Sigma Phi), that we sang about a special girl.  Only our words were different.  I couldn't tell you them here, but believe me, at our parties, we really belted our version out.

The new words were written by Cyzck and Beasey.

But, after the song, Stroud said the words I gave been waiting so long to hear, that Doug Clifford, Stu Cook and John Fogerty have been meeting and talking about burying the hatchet.  John's brother Tom Fogerty has since died.  When the band broke up in 1972, there were really hard feelings.

I consider CCR my favorite 1960s band.

Can a tour be long in coming?

Creedence Clearwater Revival-- Part 3: Internal and Legal Problems

The group broke up in 1972, but still owed 8 albums to Fantasy records.  John Fogerty refused to honor the contract and had to pay Fantasy owner Saul Zaentz performance rights to play his own songs and stopped performing them for many years.

In 1985, John Fogerty had a comeback album with Centerfield.  Zaentz sued for copyright infringement for "Old Man Down the Road" saying that it plagiarized "Run Through the Jungle."  In other words, Fogerty was sued for copying his own song.  The courts decided in favor of Fogerty.

But, Zaentz was able to get an out-of-court settlement for defamation on Fogerty's "Zanz Kant Danz."

Tom Fogerty died of AIDs complica from a transfusion after having not spoken with his brother John for years.

At the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction in 1993. CCR members Stu Cook and Doug Clifford were not allowed on the stage.  Tom Fogerty's wife had his ashes on the stage.

John Fogerty, inspired by a visit to bluesman Robert Johnson's grave, started playing his Creedence songs again.

Pete Seeger Day in Minnesota Today

From Oldies News.

Governor Mark Dayton proclaimed today, May 3, 2014, as"Pete Seeger Day" in the state.  This would have been his 95th birthday.  He died January 27, 2014.

Over 35 performers will present a multi-media even in St. Paul tonight.I was unable to find out his Minnesota connection.

Also, Creedence Clearwater Revival's leader, John Fogerty (my favorite group) will deliver the commencement address at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music on May 16th.

New Fogerty Album Out!!!

Looks like there is a trip into McHenry on the docket for today as that new John Fogerty album has been released (yesterday).  Like in the old days with Creedence Clearwater Revival and all of Fogerty's solo efforts, I HAVE to get the album as soon as I can.  I saw it was on sale at Target for $9.99, just the right price for me.

Pop that baby into the CD player and enjoy.  This one appears to be mostly his songs that he sings with other, primarily country folk, otherr than one with potty-mouth Kid and then there is a great rendition of "Proud Mary" with a bunch of people from New Orleans.

Getting Up for the New John Fogerty CD

From the February 5, 2013, USA Today "Listen Up".

Song of the Week "Born on the Bayou" by John Fogerty and Kid Rock.

"Crescent City meets the Motor City with this choogling remake from John Fogerty's forthcoming 'Wrote a Song  for Everyone.'  The album, out May 28, also features two new songs and Creedence Clearwater Revival remakes with Bob Seger, Foo Fighters, Brad Paisley, Jennifer Hudson and others."

Well, this is great news for me since I am a huge Fogerty fan, not to mention Creedence.  I'll sure be there to get my copy.  After all,  I do have all of his other records.

On a Musical Note: Beatles on Roots-- John Fogerty-- The Drive's A to Z's Back

1. BEATLES ON ROOTS-- This past Sunday, Bob Stroud's Rock and Roll Roots Show was on the six Beatles albums (the Beatles are my second-favorite group) they released in 1964. The lads were definitely busy with: Meet the Beatles, Introducing the Beatles, Second Album, A Hard day's Night, Something New and Beatles '65.

Stroud played one side of each as well as songs on the charts back then, including three written by Lennon-McCartney for Peter and Gordon: ""A World Without Love, "I Don't Want to see You Again" and "Nobody I Know."

2 JOHN FOGERTY-- My all-time favorite band is Creedence Clearwater Revival, and, of course, John Fogerty. I enjoyed seeing him this past Friday on ACM's Girls Night Out" show where they honored about eight female performers.

John hosted the part with Naomi and Wynona Judd and did a great job on their "Rockin' with the Rhythm of the Rain" and was joined by Wynona on his "Proud Mary." Wynonah sure brought back memories of the great job Tina Turner did on it back in the early 70s.

3. THE DRIVE'S A TO Z'S BACK-- Starting Thursday, the Drive, 97.1 FM in Chicago will once again unleash their A to Z upon us. That means over 2,000 songs played alphabetically according to title straight through, 24-hours-a-day until they run out of them sometime Sunday.

So long Beach Music, Hello A to Z. However, much of the time, we'll be out of the listening area and not by a 'puter.

I'll be listening Until Out of Range. --RoadDog

JF on PBS

Watching John Fogerty playing all those great songs on Live, By Request on PBS. How do you beat John Fogerty playing both those new songs and the classics when he was with CCR?

I'm very glad he no longer refuses to play the old stuff. For an older guy, he doesn't miss a step rocking and rolling. The fan favorite by vote was "Have You Ever Seen the Rain." Well, he never got to play "In-a-Gadda-da-Vida"ike he promised. Last song "Down On the Corner,"

To my knowledge, I have all of his albums.

I already belong to WTTW so all the pleading gets a bit old.

John Fogerty's New Album

Always a greatday for me when John Fogerty comes out with a new album, and this last September was one of those times. Makes my day.

The new album is called "The Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again" and this is from a review by Tribune Newspapers critic Greg Kot.

After Creedence Clearwater Revival broke up, Fogerty released a solo album called "Blue Ridge Rangers" of his country favorites that served as an introduction to the music that shaped his songwriting and style.

He updates the idea with this new one. I went out and bought it the first day it was released. Who would have figured he could have done such a great job on diverse songs like "Heaven's Just a Sin Away" by the Kendalls and "Moody River" by Pat Boone. Probably the strangest is Gene Simmons' "Haunted House."

This was a lot of fun music. The only shortcoming was that there were only 12 songs. Twenty would have been much better.

Song List

Paradise
Never Ending Song of Love
Garden Party
I Don't Care (Just As Long As You Love Me)
Back Home Again
I'll Be There
Change in the Weather
Moody River
Heaven's Just a Sin Away
Fallin' Fallin' Fallin'
Haunted House
When Will I Be Loved

Dwight Sings Buck-- Part 2

Buck Owens was the founder of the Bakersfield Sound. Merle Haggard, another one of my favorite performers, is also a practitioner of the sound. Don Rich, a member of Buck's band was also in on the creation of this sound.

Dwight Yoakam revitalized the Bakersfield Sound (also called Bakersfield Honky Tonk with his "Little Sister" and "Guitars, Cadillacs, and Hillbilly Music." He had 17 top ten country songs and sold more than 23 million albums. I have more than a few of those.

Back Owens died March 25, 2006.

I remember John Fogerty and Creedence Clearwater Revival "Listening to Buck Owens" while looking out their backdoor. That would be great if John Fogerty would also do an album of Buck Owens music. Oh well. wishful hoping.

The 15 tracks on "Dwight Sings Buck" makes for a great road cruisin' companion if you can afford the gas.
