Friday, December 23rd, Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM,the Drive, started their annual New Year's A to Z where they go alphabetically through over 2,000 classic rock songs.  And, they're still going and in the letter "U" now.

Ten Songs from 1970 and That Dear Old Fraternity of Mine: Delta Sigma Phi-- 'But to Raise Hell While We're Here'

 Yesterday, Bob Stroud played ten songs from 1970 on his Ten at Ten at Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM.  I feel obliged to include them here for you.

Like I said yesterday, 1970 was the end of my freshman year, start of sophomore year at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb  It was also a fraternity year for me, pledging Delta Sigma Phi in the spring and as an active in the fall.  I figured being in a fraternity was going to be fun and it sure was.

Not to say that my grades suffered, but they did.  School got in the way of fraternity.  I was a real frat rat of the first order.  Like one of our old frat songs went:  "Well, it's not for knowledge that we came to college, but to raise hell while we're here!"

Well, I Went to My Local Record Store on Record Store Day Today

I drove to McHenry, Illinois, just a few hours ago and visited my usual mom and pop record store, The Vinyl Frontier.  I always thought that was a great name for a record store.  Quite catchy.

However, this year, the store was not participating.  Evidently there is a $1500 cost involved to be in it, and business has been so bad thanks to you-know-what, they are sitting this one out.

However, I did what I was going to do anyway and that was buy at least one album and five CDs.

Welcome Summer 2020, One Long and Strange Trip We'll Have, It Won't Be Normal to Say the Least. Flashback to 1968 on WXRT Today

Summer officially arrived here last Saturday, and, believe me, has been long anticipated.  Between this virus thing and the Blacks wanting to tear down every Confederate statue and memorial, these have been some rough times with me.  And, I'm not sure which is worse in those departments.

Last night, Liz and I met Kevin and Kelly at Sunnyside Tavern in Johnsburg, Illinois, and WENT INSIDE!!!  This is the first time we've been inside for cocktails since March 16, when we were inside Sunnyside the last day it was open before virus closure.

We then started going to Sunnyside when they reopened for outside service on May 29.  And, we've been going back most every weekend when they're open from Friday to Sunday.   Good to see old friends whom we hadn't seen since March.

This past Sunday, Bob Stroud had a heaping helping of Summer Songs on his Rock and Roll Roots show on Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM, the Drive.  I felt obliged to listen to it, because it ain't summer till that Bob plays that music.

Gets you into the  mood, you know.  I'll be listing those sand and water and concert songs in the next post.

But, in the meantime, reminding everyone that in an hour, Chicago's WXRT, 93.1 FM, will be going back to 1968 on their Saturday Morning Flashback show from 9 am to noon, CDST.  It streams at www.wxrt.com.

So, if 1968 songs are your bag, this is where you want to be.  This was a high school year for me, junior-senior year.  Some great songs on the Senior Lounge jukebox at Palatine High School in Palatine, Illinois.  (Class of '69 and NOW, I am 69.)

WXRT is now playing a great Grateful Dead, well, Jerry Garcia, song  "The Wheel."  I don't know how a group that had such great studio albums could be so bad in concert.  The worst concert I ever went to was a Grateful Dead concert back in the 80s with a buddy who is a Deadhead.  But, then again, I really hate jamming, especially excessive jamming.  (I'm more of a Parrothead.)

But their studio albums were works of art.

What's So Great About the Grateful Dead?

Much is being made about the Grateful Dead's "Fare Thee Well" concert to be held this summer in Chicago.  the tickets are all sold out and people are looking for them.  Radio stations are giving some away.  I had two friends that got into the lottery but were unsuccessful.

I, for one, would never waste my money on one of their concerts.  I did once back in the late '70s at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin.  Worst concert I've ever seen.  It lasted way too long and I think they maybe played three or four songs in 3-4 hours.

I should mention here that I am not a fan of jamming at all.  One or two songs I can perhaps put up with, but definitely not this.  I did, however, find enjoyment in watching the others who were obviously in their own little worlds.  One whole hillside seemed to be moving to the jamming.

And, I have lots of Grateful Dead studio albums and enjoy their songs.  Great stuff, but that jamming just doesn't make it for me.  I realize that puts me in the minority, but I wouldn't go to this concert, especially without Garcia, with all the jamming I'm sure they'll do.

Not So Grateful Ripoff

From the May 20, 2015, Chicago Tribune "Auctioneer devastated by theft of Dead work" by Erin Chan Ding.

Well, it was supposed to be all peaceful and festive with the auction of Grateful Dead memorabilia to take place here in McHenry County at the Donley Auction Dervices in Union, Illinois.  But some spoil sport has ruined it and stolen some $75,000 worth of stuff.There were some 700 items to be at auction on the Grateful Dead Family Jubilee Auction, set to coincide with the group's 50th anniversary of formation.

Stolen items include a 1966 original silk screen of a skeleton with roses enhanced by artist Stanley Mouse with a reserve set at $25,000.  The other items are a 1986 German promoter poster, a 1986 Statue of Liberty tour poster and a 1966 serigraph signed by Wes Wilson.
