Interesting Winter So Far and Adios Toby!!

January started off fine, then we had several 5 inch snowfalls and then a big 13-incher.  Unfortunately, I had problems getting the old snowblower (it's about 22 years old) started until the 13-incher, then it really had a hard time coping with all of it.  I did get some of the driveway finished before a really nice neighbor came over and finished it.  Of course, there was also those three days below zero the entire day.

Now, February has been a beaut so far.  Finally, all that snow has melted and the last several days its been 40s and even 50s today.  I was able to open up the house and get some fresh air in it.  Plus, I even had peanuts in the shell our OD (On Deck).  Not too many things finer that peanuts in the shell.

So sorry to lose one of my all-time favorite country music stars, Toby Keith.  I have most of his CDs and even one on my Ultimate Jukebox.  Who cannot help but sing along with him on "I Love This Bar" and "Red Solo Cup."  And, of course that "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" pretty well sums up my feeling about 9/11.

I didn't find out about his death until Tuesday afternoon at Sunnyside Tavern in Johnsburg.  Someone put on a bunch of his songs and we gave him a rousing sendoff.

Guitarist / fiddle player with country rock band Alabama.

A country supergroup that had 46 Top 40s between 1977 and 1994, including 32 #1s on the Country Charts.  

Some of their hits:

"Tennessee River"  (#1 1980)

"Mountain Music"  (#1-1982)

"Dixieland Delight)  (#1- 1983.

They even had five Top 40s on the Pop Charts.

Got their start at the Bowery in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, playing for tips.

Died 4 October.  Singer / songwriter (country).  "The Coal Miner's Daughter."  Had huge country career.  Between 1960 and 1993 had 63 Top 100 country singles.  Included in that were 11 No. 1s and 39 Top Tens.

Also sang with country star Conway Twitty and had five additional #1s and 13 more Top Tens.

Sang a lot of women songs like ""You Ain't Woman Enough", "Your Squaw Is On the Warpath", "One's on the Way" and "The Pill."

Singer with the mother-daughter country group Judds.

Between 1983 and 1991 had an amazing run of success in country music, releasing six albums, winning five Grammy Awards and nine Country Music Association awards.

From 1984 to 1989 they had fourteen #1s including:

"Grandpa (Tell Me 'Bout the Good Old Days)"

C.W. McCALL, 93

Died April 1, 2022

Country singer known for his 1976 hit song "Convoy."

Also was an advertising executive.  Real name  was William Dale Fries, Jr.

His song "Convoy" took advantage of the current CB radio craze going on in the United States in 1976 and was a country crossover hit that went to #1 on the Pop Charts.

He also had six Top 20s in Country Music.

His "Roses for Mama" really hithome for me when I heard it on his greatest hits CD as I drove back to North Caroilina for my mom's funeral.

Country singer.

Born Warner MacPherson in 1938 in Nashville, raised in Vicksburg, Mississippi. From 1957 to 1977 had 23 Country Top 100s.  From 1964 to 1969, had ten Top Tens.

His biggest hit was "The Bridge Washed Out"  (#1 in 1965)

Several months ago, I was in Wal-Mart going through their bin of close out CDs and found this great little nugget for the whopping price of $5.  Well, quick as a wink, I grabbed it.  I wasn't going to let it get away from me.

I already had most of the songs on other LPs, CDs and cassettes, but this collection would fit in just great in my Ultimate Jukebox.

And, besides that, I am a real big fan of Outlaw Country.  One of my favorite albums, of course, is "Wanted! The Outlaws."

Last Weekend: An Afternoon Country Band, Sunnyside, Cullom Knoll and Sunnyside Again

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 5

This being the first weekend of the month meant that the Fox Lake American Legion was having their  monthly first Saturday entertainment at the Drop Zone Bar.  The Alonzo Bart band was playing.  They have four pieces including a steel guitar and, of course, played lots of great old country music.

Where else are you going to go on a February Saturday afternoon for entertainment.  Draft beer pints were just $2.

We were going to go to Stucky's in Johnsburg next, but they were way too crowded, so dropped by Sunnyside for a few before going home.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 6

We found out last night that Sunnyside's owner, Amy and Denny had bought a place over in McCullom Lake near McHenry called the Cullom Knoll, one of our favorite places to go before the virus.  So, this was a good reason to stop back by it.

They still had their great Sunday specials of a pitcher of draft beer for $5 and a 12-inch cheese pizza with 75 cent toppings.  We had our usual pineapple, black olive and bacon pizza.

Afterwards, we stopped by Sunnyside on our way home.

Country singer and songwriter.

As a recording artist, placed more than 50 songs on the country charts 1967 to 87, including 21 which became Top Ten hits.

Wrote "Harper Valley PTA" for Jeannie C. Riley" and "Itty Bitty" for Alan Jackson.

I remember seeing quite a country show back in the early 1980s featuring Tom T. Hall and Bobby Bare.

Guess I'm WAY Out of the Loop in Music These Days: About That Current and Country Music

Well, we have that giant music festival going on in Chicago this weekend called Lollapalooza and a couple weeks ago we had a big country festival near here in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin called Country Thunder.

I went to Country Thunder once quite a while ago, back in my much younger days.  But, as I get older, huge crowds just isn't something I want to experience.  It did used to bother me, but now its sure does.

Anyway, I go a schedule for Country Thunder (and I still am a big country music fan and often listen to WBRF, 98.1 FM out of Galax, Virginia over the internet.  They play what they call Classic Country.  The older stuff.)

Out of four headliners July 15-18, I only recognized two:  Eric Church and Blake Shelton.  Out of the other 18 performers, I only recognize three:  Clay Walker, Tanya Tucker and Neal McCoy.

Out of 170+ bands, this was real sad, I only recognized seven: Miley Cyrus, Black Pumas, Limp Bizkit, Journey, Mt. Joy, Post Malone and Foo Fighters.

Like I said, Guess I'm Out of the Loop Now.  --RoadHopeless?

RICHIE ALBRIGHT, 81

Died 9 February 2021

Long-term drummer for Waylon Jennings and member of Waymore's Outlaws (to carry on after Jennings' death in 2002).

Aided in the development of Jennings' Outlaw sound.  Joined Jenning's band, the Waylors in 1964.  Waylon even named his son Waylon Albright Jennings "Shooter."

TOM STEVENS, 64

Died  24 January 2021

Bass player with the Long Ryders.

Classified as an alternative country, Paisley Underground band.  I's also put them as Americana.  Performed principally between 1982 and 1987.

Their sound is described as being reminiscent of the Rubber Soul Beatles, electric Bob Dylan, Buffalo Springfield and the Flying Burrito Brothers, only with a harder edge.

I must admit, I'd never heard of them, but have now been listening to them a lot recently on You Tube.
