1.  AS CRUMMY AS IT GETS--  Today set a new low in regards to crummy weather days we've been having so far this spring.  It was 32 degrees at 9 am with a forecast high of 48 (but I'm thinking we didn't make it).  Plus rain, overcast, windy and lots of cold in the air which the wind blew right through you.  But, we have a teaser coming though.  Supposedly it will be 80 degrees come Monday.

2.  BEER NUGGETS--  Last night we went to Bricks 'N Ivy here in Spring Grove, Illinois, and enjoyed the half price appetizers and pitchers of beer.  They have a new menu item and it is one of our favorites, something called beer nuggets which are fried dough.  Couldn't beat a basket of it for $3.50.  We also had half price wings ($8 for 12).  But, I can remember when a wing special was just 25 cents.

3.  BURNING--  We get to burn yard waste on the weekends during April and May.  The problem with that is that we haven't had a weekend which did not have rain or howling winds.  Come on guys.

4.  WRIGLEY FIELD TONIGHT--  The White Sox travel to Wrigley Field tonight to play the Chicago Cubs in our Crosstown Classic.  It is a battle of two 9-13 teams.  I am sure glad that I am not out there because of (see #1).

1.  UKRAINE FLAG

I saw a Ukraine flag in the Jewel parking lot earlier today.  Come on Ukraine.  It is amazing what they are accomplishing against such overwhelming odds.

2.  COME ON WEATHER!!

No breaks from the weather  After a wonderful weekend with temps in the lower 80s, we now have 44 degree weather with a strong wind blowing the cold on us.  Is there going to be a spring?  Freeze warnings for tonight!!  

3.  INFLATION GETS PERSONAL 

Today at our local breakfast spot, we were getting ready to order from the specials list when a waitress ran over and quickly gathered the specials pages and replaced them with another one.  We saw that the new one was $1 more for everything.  Ouch!!

4.  SAD SOX, SAD HAWKS & SAD BULLS

Rough time to be pulling for Chicago teams.  The Sox are in the middle of a seven game losing streak and the only thing happening more often is the loss of players to injury.  Seems like a new one every day.

The Blackhawks can't end the season soon enough.  And, I remember when they won their 3rd Stanley Cup in five years back in 2015 that they were talking about a Blackhawk Dynasty.  Little did we know we were seeing the end of it.

At least the Bulls showed the first improvement since those wonderful 1990s and made the playoffs this year, but will most likely be eliminated tomorrow.

1.  TIRED OF DA SNOOP DOGG--

I think this guy is on TV pitching something every commercial break these days.  Kind of reminds me of the bad old days when you couldn't avoid Michael or Mike.  (Michael Jordan and Mike Ditka)

2.  TIRED OF DA GAMBLING SPOTS--

And man, are there commercials to get you into the clutches of gambling.

3.  NOT TIRED OF DA TOURNAMENT--

But, the NCAA Basketball Tournament has sure not failed to live up to its hype.  By my rough count e have had 26 games I consider great games.  I mean, real close.  Also, there have been 11 upsets.  Especially that win by St. Peter's over Kentucky.  

I don't know about you, but I sure had to look up and see where St. Peter's was (in New Jersey a few miles from New York City) much like I had to do Gonzaga in the early days of their dominance.

And, We Start the Sweet Sixteen Today!!!

JSS: Crazy Weather-- Yellowstone, 1883-- the Drive's A to Z-- The Big Guy Up the Middle

1.  CRAZY WEATHER--   We certainly have been having some crazy weather around here.  Yesterday we had thunder, lightning, rain and snow.  There was quite a bit of snow on the ground.  Then yesterday, we got 3-4 inches of very slippery snow.

2.  YELLOWSTONE, 1883--  This past Sunday I was able to watch some episodes of Yellowstone and 1883 on TV.  Both are very good, but all that good acting is kind of negated by the overuse of the f___ word.  Come on, get a thesaurus and expand your language base.

3.  THE DRIVE'S A TO Z--  The Drive, 97.1 FM, is now up to the letter "I" in their annual end-of-the-year A to Z.  They are playing 2,000+ songs.  They aren't sure when they'll end, but for sure sometime after the start of the new year.  It streams.

4.  THE BIG GUY UP THE MIDDLE--  Last night, O enjoyed watching the Minnesota-West Virginia bowl game, when the Gophers put in offensive lineman 380 pound, six foot 4 inch Daniel Faalele in  the backfield to run a play.  You never saw a team call a time out that fast as the Mountaineers did.  It didn't help as he crashed right through the line like there was nothing there.

The commentators mentioned when the Bears did that with our Refrigerator Perry back in the 80s.  It sure reminded me of him.

JSS: Fillin' Up Over the Border-- So Sad About Kenosha-- $9.39 for a McRib Meal?-- 'The Kind of Boy You Can't Forget'-- Raindrops

1.  FILLIN' UP OVER THE BORDER--  Around here, folks have been taking to filling up their gas tanks just over the border in Wisconsin.  Why, you might ask?  Because gas in Wisconsin is anywhere from 40 cents to fifty cents less than Illinois.  It sure helps to be living just eight miles from the Illinois-Wisconsin border.  $3.10 sure beast $3.50 to $3.60.

2.  SO SAD ABOUT KENOSHA--  That well-publicized trial is coming to an end in Kenisha, Wisconsin, where the teenager killed those two people during the riots there in August 2020.  And there is a big fear that certain people will start rioting, burning and looting again if they are not happy with the verdict.

That is a sad thing to have to worry about.

3.  $9.39 FOR A McRIB MEAL?--   I went to my local McDonald's the other day to buy a McRib meal and didn't.  I wanted to, but not at the $9.39 they wanted for a McRib meal.  Gosh.  Inflation give me a break.  I could buy almost three gallons of gas for that price.

4.  THE KIND OF BOY YOU CAN'T FORGET"-- RAINDROPS--  I was listening to Jim Morgan on the Surf, 94.9 FM in North Myrtle Beach (SC) the other day and heard this song again for the first time in a long time.  Give it a listen on You Tube.  And, it has a very interesting story to how it was made.

1.  MISSING BOB ROHRMAN

Bob Rohrman died Tuesday, September 1, 2020.  And, I miss his wacky TV commercials for his family-owned auto group were standard TV fodder and who put the ROAR in ROHRman.

2,  RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA COMMERCIALS--  And, on the subject of commercials, now I hear commercials telling people to save money on their recreational marijuana by getting a doctor's excuse.  I really never thought I'd be hearing these on the radio.

Of course, we have had legal marijuana sales here in Illinois for a year now and every month they set new sales records.  And a whole lot of the cost you pay for it is taxes.  Hey, our state is broke so nice to have the revenue.  As for us, we have yet to go buy any.  Personally I have enough problems with drinking and don't need another problem.

We also have never played any of the gambling slot machines that seem to be everywhere in the state these days.  I'm waiting for them to start putting them in bathrooms.

3.  FIREFIGHTERS' STEAK FRY--  Today, the Spring Grove Firefighters are having the annual Steak Fry, so we will be going over to that.

JSS: Gas Prices-- Flower Sales Finally-- Buddy Denny's Massive RoadTrip-- A Fish Fry and View With a Brew

JSS--  Just Some Stuff

1.  GAS PRICES--  After last year, when the prices were so low, but essentially nothing was open, we have been in for a massive gas gouge as things open up and people hit the road.  Gas around here in northeastern Illinois are anywhere from $3.00 to $3.50.  Go over the border to Wisconsin (inly about eight miles away) and the gas is $2.95.  Guess where I get my gas?

2.  FLOWER SALES FINALLY--  All last year, I waited for annual flowers to go on sale, but it never happened.  I was beginning to give up for this year as well.  The best I could find were clearance flowers at Wal-Mart which were near dying, but recoverable.

However, the last two days I was on a buying spree at Menard's as their six pack annuals and seed geraniums were 50 cents.  Six packs of wave petunias are $1.25.  Now, I just have to find someone to plant them.  Any volunteers?

3.  BUDDY DENNY'S MASSIVE ROAD TRIP--  In a few hours I will be driving over to Marengo, Illinois, to meet my buddy Denny, who, after chomping at the bit last year, finally got to go out on the road and what a trip he has been on.  He has driven the entire length of the old Yellowstone Trail which traverses the U.S. from Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound and is coming back from Oregon to Massachusetts on U.S. Highway 20.  Marengo is on US-20.

4.  A FISH FRY AND VIEW WITH A BREW--  Last night, we met up with friends at 'Cuda's on Grasslake Road in Antioch, Illinois, for their wonderful beer-battered fish fry, then adjourned to the nearby Lake View Bar on Grasslake and sat out on the deck, enjoying the view toward Blarney Island, the sunset and especially the $1 brews.

1.  SUMMER SONGS--  A great weekend to listen to music associated with the official start of our favorite season, and that would be summer.  Yesterday, Bon Stroud played ten summer songs on his Ten at Ten and this Sunday he will devote his entire Rock and Roll Roots show to that season.  It is on WDRV, 97.1 FM and streams from 9 to noon

Plus, tomorrow Bill St. James' Time Warp will feature summer songs from 6 to 10 AM on Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM.  It streams.

2.   1980--  Plus, Chicago's WXRT, 93.1 FM will feature 1980 from 9 am to noon.  It streams as well.

3.  PAUL'S BIRTHDAY--  Sunday's Breakfast With the Beatles hosted by Terri Hemmert will be all Paul McCartney from 8 to 10 am.  It's his birthday, you know.  79 years old.  It streams.

4.  SURE NEEDED THE RAIN--  We had quite a display of lightning and thunder roll through the Midwest this morning.  It was a nice steady rain for several hours and we sure needed it.  The lawns were all brown except for the folks who watered theirs.  We still nee d more, though, but every little bit sure helps.

JSS: Classic Cinemas Reopens-- Lawn Tractor Comes Home (Hopefully)-- Dandelions Anyone

JSS:  Just Some Stuff

1.  CLASSIC CINEMAS REOPENS--  Well, some good news today.  I received an e-mail from my main movie theater chain, Classic Cinemas, that all locations are reopen today, Thursday, April 15.  With the exception f one restart back last summer that was short-lived, they've been closed since March 2020.

I most often go to the theater in Fox Lake, Illinois, but also the one in Woodstock.  Most years I see between 40 and 80 movies at the theater and sure do miss it.  

The last one I saw was "Birds of Prey" back on February 28, 2020.

2.  LAWN TRACTOR COMES HOME (Hopefully)--  Hopefully my John Deere tractor/mower comes back home on Friday.  It is at the John Deere place getting summerized.  That grass is REALLY, REALLY growing fast.  Sure can't get behind on the grass in the spring growing season.

3.  DANDELIONS ANYONE--  Of course, along with the grass greening up, certain yellow objects have begun making their appearance.  The annual dandelion attack is underway.  Oh well, think of it this way, it is flowers in the yard.  I don't mind the yellow part of their lives, but don't particularly like the dried, tall, parachute phase.

TEENAGERS AND CATS:  No matter what you do for them, it is not enough.  Indeed. all human efforts are barely adequate to compensate for the privilege of waiting on them hand and foot.

JSS: Pi Day-- Freezing Rain & Snow On the Way-- The Drive's 20th

JSS--  Just Some Stuff

1.  PI DAY--   Yesterday was National Pi Day thanks to the date being 3/14, the first three digits in that math thing called pi.  So, I went to the local Jewel and bought a fresh-made apple pie.  You'll probably never guess what I paid for it.

2.  FREEZING RAIN & SNOW ON THE WAY--  Just what I wanted to hear, this last week of winter as it was and Ides of March as it is.  And, we just recently got rid of the rest of the snow that we gathered in January and February last week.

Oh, well.  What can I say, but our local groundhog prognosticator, Woodstock Willie, lied when he said we were going to have an early spring back on Feb. 2.

3.  THE DRIVE'S 20TH--  All day, Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM, the Drive will be playing the exact set list of songs they played om this date back in 2001 when they started playing Classic Rock.  Well worth a listen and it streams.

JSS: One Tough Winter-- Truck Bed and Deck-- Front Porch Sidewalk-- Driveway

JSS--  Just Some Stuff

1.  ONE TOUGH WINTER--  Even though we didn't have any 12+ snowfalls, there were several 5-8 inchers and a lot of lesser ones.  he big problem was the temperatures which rarely got over freezing the last two months.  What fell, stayed.  On several occasions it was a mix of rain and snow which froze to make for some fun removing the ice.

2.  TRUCK BED AND DECK--  The truck bed (parked outside) was filled to the top with snow and I am just now getting to see the bedliner.  The same with the deck which was impassable with all the snow, but now about half clear.

3.  FRONT PORCH --  The front porch sidewalk is still covered with snow/ice to about a foot high.  I'm waiting for mother nature to take care of it.

4.  DRIVEWAY--  I also totally lost in my efforts to keep the driveway cleared.  Much of February and January, I had maybe a little over one lane open out of the two and a half.  And that was with a whole lot of ice chopping.  The snowblower couldn't keep up with it.

JSS: Gone But Not Forgotten-- Still Choppin'-- If We Could Just Get Snow To...

1.  GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN--  At 9 am today, CST, Bob Stroud is going to have his annual Gone But Not Forgotten Salute on his Rock and Roll Roots show on Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM, The Drive.  It streams and goes to noon.  Of course, I have written about most if not all of these artists in this blog, but Bob always has interesting things to say about them and, of course, plays a song or two by them.

I don't know, but this year, two shows might be needed.  Quite a few deaths.

Worth a listen.

2.  STILL CHOPPIN'--  And are my arms, shoulders and especially my wrists really sore.  That snow we got last week was really heavy and between just the regular amount of it on the driveway and especially that huge amount deposited at the foot of it by the street, my poor little snow blower was completely outgunned.  

As a result, I have been out chopping ice most every day so far this week.

3.  IF WE COULD JUST GET SNOW TO...    If we could just get snow to stop falling on driveways, sidewalks, streets and roads, I would be a big fan of it.  But never when I have to deal with it.  It's really pretty on the yards and bushes this time of the year.  And, of course there are those times where the snow attaches itself to trees and bushes that are unbelievably pretty.  I call it "Nature's Done Been Painting."

Or, I wouldn't mind it if those folks who really love winter would come over and clear my driveway and sidewalks before they go out and have fun in it, I'd definitely be okay with that.  But, whenever I ask a skier or snowmobiler to do that, I just get a blank stare and sometimes a "kind" word or two.

JSS: Ice Chopping-- How Come?-- A Disgrace Yesterday

JSS--  Just Some Stuff

1.  ICE CHOPPING--  We were hit with 4 inches of snow the other day which would gave been more, except that it turned to sleet near the end.  However, that made the snow really heavy and overpowered my poor snow blower so I couldn't get the driveway cleared off.  And, driving on it has now caused it to turn to ice.

I have been out chopping it and are my wrists sore.

2.  HOW COME?  How come I get 2/3 of the snow on my side of the street when the snowplow comes by and the people on the other side get just 1.3.  Not fair.  They should get more.

3.  A DISGRACE YESTERDAY--  What happened in Washington, D.C. yesterday was a disgrace.  To think a group of people could get that far when our elected officials are conducting business is scary.

However, it was interesting to note how the liberal press was calling it as a riot when they would not call BLM's days of rampage, rioting, burning and looting anything other than civil unrest.

Come on Guys!  A Riot is a riot is a riot!!

JSS: A to Z Continues-- Snowblower Started-- Snow-- Didn't 'Woke' But Found My Gloves, Boots and Knit Hat

1.  A TO Z CONTINUES

The Drive's Rock A to Z continues and is up to the letter "L" right now with Peter Frampton's "Lines On My Face: playing.  They are thinking it might end on Monday, Jan.5, at this time.  Great music done alphabetically.  It streams at www.wdrv.com.  Give it a listen.  "Listen to Her Heart" by Tom Petty right now.  "Listen to the Music"--  Doobie Brothers.  "Listen to What the Man Said"--  Paul McCartney & Wings.

2.  SNOWBLOWER STARTED

Always a scary thing this time of the year.  Will the snowblower start after sitting idle (and without gas/oil mixture with the two-stroke engine).  I found out the hard way about ten years ago that you HAD BETTER run the mixture out or getting it started the next season is not going to be easy.

Yesterday, it would not start.  Last night we got 3-4 inches of heavy snow.  Just a short time ago, it started on first pull.  Yea for me.

3.  SNOW

Like I said, the imminent arrival of forecast snow got me to moving on the snowblower project yesterday.  We've been fortunate so far this winter season and only had about an inch in one snowfall.  Last year we had two snowfalls of 5-6 inchers before December:  one on Halloween and one on Veterans Day.

We ended up with 3-4 inches of snow.

4.  DIDN'T "WOKE" BUT FOUND MY GLOVES, BOOTS AND KNIT HAT

Another tradition this time of the year is finding out where I put my knit hat, gloves and snow boots.   You tend to forget over the spring, summer and fall.  I have plenty of those hats and gloves because of many purchases in the past, but for some reason, they can still find a place to hide come search time.

But, this year I found one pair of gloves and one knit hat within a reasonable time.

JSS About That Virus Thing: Commercials, Piano Dirges, Trying Times, Whole Milk

Just Some Stuff About These Days.

1.  COMMERCIALS--  Listening to the radio and watching TV, there seems to be a whole lot of commercials about how to get out of your time shares.  Sure glad we didn't buy one back in the days when we went to Myrtle Beach and were accosted often by these wonderful deals that were too good to pass up.

If it's not that, then it is lawsuits against nursing homes for elderly abuse.  You'd think these days the biggest worry about nursing homes would be the CV getting in.

2.  PIANO DIRGES--  I am getting to the point that I can't stand those slow, dirge pianos on commercials anymore.  Hope they don't destroy my love of piano.

3.  TRYING TIMES--  However, I have a new drinking game since I can't go into bars anymore right now.  Every time I hear a commercial with the words "Trying" Times or some variation of it, it is time to take a drink.  After awhile you forget about it all.

4.  WHOLE MILK--  Liz has been the one going to the store to buy stuff and she only gets whole milk (the Walgreens selection is limited), whereas I like 2% milk.  I remember the old days when my parents had milk delivered in those metal boxes which were handy places to store crickets, grass hoppers, frogs, toads and lizards we'd collect.

Now On Day 59 of Essentially Staying Home.

LAUGHTER HELPS WITH THE "V":  Well, at least the fear of missing out (FOMO) isn't a thing anymore.

JSS: Them Dandies-- Lightning Strike-- Cole Kmet-- Rain

JSS--  Just Some Stuff

1.  THEM DANDIES--  It's spring now.  I know because my crop of home grown dandelions are in full bloom.  I should learn how to make dandelion wine.  I could make a real lot of that stuff.

2.  LIGHTNING STRIKE--  Last night we had some bad storms come through.  At one point there was a flash of lightning and at the same moment a resounding boom.  That was close.  I'm sure I felt the shock waves downstairs in the basement where I was watching TV.  If I wasn't awake wen it hit, I was afterwards.

3.  COLE KMET--  The Bears second round pick this strange draft picking.  I just hope they give him more of a chance that they did for NIU players they picked or invited to camp.  Tight ends are the most underused players in the NFL.  They should always be the automatic go to guy when plays fall apart.  Put him in, coach.

4.  RAIN--  Okay, we had that storm last night with the lightning strike then rain off and on (mostly on) all night and now all day.  The drainage basin behind us is about one third full.  I'm sure they're looking into closing the Chain because of flooding.  (But, wait, we don't have a boat anymore so doesn't really matter.)

I really need a few dry and seasonably warm days to get yard work done.  Plus, today is cold enough and wet enough to be prime time for you-know-what.  So, I stayed inside all day, mostly hunkered over this here 'pute a-typing away with my two little fingers.

JSS: rn Sure Looks Like an "M"-- Relief Money Coming April 15-- Good Weather-- No Boating For Us This Year

1.  rn SURE LOOKS LIKE AN "M"--  While typing (with my own two little fingers) the last post, I can't but notice that when you put the letters "rn" together, that sure looks like the letter "m."

2.  RELIEF MONEY COMING APRIL 15--  Listening to Myrtle Beach's Surf, 94.9 FM this morning, I heard Jim Morgan say that money from the government to tide us over (somewhat) through this "V" thing will be coming April 15.  For some reason that date used to mean something else.

3.  GOOD WEATHER--  Since March, we have only had three days I'd consider good with fairly warm temperatures (never over 70 degrees though) and little or no wind.  That is good because crummy weather keeps folks inside in this "V" time.  However, today (Tuesday, April 7) looks like a good day here in northeast Illinois, so we'll see how many stay inside or refrain from traveling off their property.

4.  NO BOATING FOR US THIS YEAR--  This will be the first year since 1985, that Liz and I won't have a boat.  Two of our friends have already been out on their boats.  But, with all this crummy weather and you-know-what, I doubt that we'll miss boating all that much.

JSS: John Deere Green Tractor in Driveway-- First Chipmunk-- First Day OD-- Goodbye "Hawaii Five-O"

JSS--  Just Some Stuff

1.  JOHN DEERE GREEN IN DRIVEWAY--  Today, I got a sure sign of spring in that my 1994 lawn tractor was delivered by Buck Brothers in Wauconda.  All washed up, tuned up and ready to go.

2.  FIRST CHIPMUNK--  Yesterday, I saw my first chipmunk scampering across the deck.  Since they hibernate in the winter, does this mean spring?  However, they are going to be greatly disappointed as I am about out of safflower seed (their favorite) and don't intend to restock till all this stuff is over.  Sorry Chippers!

3.  FIRST DAY OD--  And, we had a mighty fine day today with sun and temps in the mid 60s.  So, I went out an sat OD (On Deck), read the Chicago Tribune, ate peanuts and had a coupla beers.  Now, that is a way to enjoy yourself anytime, but especially in these days.

4.  GOODBYE "HAWAII FIVE-O"--  Tonight is the series finale of one of my favorite shows.    Loved the cast, but not so much Dan-O's current haircut.  And that beautiful scenery.  Have some shrimp for me guys.

All this reminds you that there is another world.

JSS: NIU Student on Jeopardy-- "I Am Legend"-- WBBM AM ON WXRT FM

JSS--  Just Some Stuff

1.  NIU STUDENT ON JEOPARDY--  Senior Steph O'Malley was a contestant on Jeopardy this past Friday, March 20 during College Week.  Unfortunately those bankrupts really hurt her.  But so proud of you, Steph.

2.  "I AM LEGEND"--  Since  "House Arrest" I have been watching a lot of movies.  Thursday night I saw Will Smith in this movie.  Probably not a good choice to watch this movie these days. At least we don't have zombies.

3.  WBBM AM ON WXRT FM--  The other day I turned on the radio in the morning to listen to WXRT in Chicago as usual, but instead heard WBBM News Radio.  I was a bit confused until I found out that they were now doing news updates about the "V."

JSS: Your Math Problem for Today-- Gas Under $2!!!-- The Last Panic

JSS--  Just Some Stuff

1.  YOUR MATH PROBLEM FOR TODAY--  I was in Jewel (our local grocery store for you non-Chicago area folk) last week and bought an apple pie.  Regular price was $6.99.  It was marked down $3.85, such a good deal.  How much did I pay for it and why was it marked down so much?  (Hint.  Pies haven't been found to spread you-know-what as of yet anyway.)

2.  GAS UNDER $2!!!  Friday,I got gas in McHenry, Illinois, for my Dakota at $2.05 (well, $2.04.9) and thought that was a great price.  But, yesterday, on our way over to Sunnyside in Johnsburg for St. Patrick's festivities, my eyes espied $1.86 at the Mobil station.  And, no lines.  We were getting down to below half a tank so filled up.  Never thought I'd see gas under $2 again.  But, I'm sure the virus will send it back up again.

Of course, back in 1970, had you told me I'd get excited about how low $1.86 was, I wouldn't have believed it.

3.  THE LAST PANIC--  Friday, I went to Meijer in McHenry for their fantastic Buy Ten for $10, Get One Free Deal.  This was in the afternoon and the first thing that should have tipped me off was the full parking lot.  Then, when I went in, there were only a couple shopping carts available and then I saw all those really, really full shopping carts.  Was there a hurricane on the way?

The last time I remember seeing a panic like this was back in the infamous Y2K.  Remember that?
