JSS: Pi Day-- Freezing Rain & Snow On the Way-- The Drive's 20th

JSS--  Just Some Stuff

1.  PI DAY--   Yesterday was National Pi Day thanks to the date being 3/14, the first three digits in that math thing called pi.  So, I went to the local Jewel and bought a fresh-made apple pie.  You'll probably never guess what I paid for it.

2.  FREEZING RAIN & SNOW ON THE WAY--  Just what I wanted to hear, this last week of winter as it was and Ides of March as it is.  And, we just recently got rid of the rest of the snow that we gathered in January and February last week.

Oh, well.  What can I say, but our local groundhog prognosticator, Woodstock Willie, lied when he said we were going to have an early spring back on Feb. 2.

3.  THE DRIVE'S 20TH--  All day, Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM, the Drive will be playing the exact set list of songs they played om this date back in 2001 when they started playing Classic Rock.  Well worth a listen and it streams.

JSS: Your Math Problem for Today-- Gas Under $2!!!-- The Last Panic

JSS--  Just Some Stuff

1.  YOUR MATH PROBLEM FOR TODAY--  I was in Jewel (our local grocery store for you non-Chicago area folk) last week and bought an apple pie.  Regular price was $6.99.  It was marked down $3.85, such a good deal.  How much did I pay for it and why was it marked down so much?  (Hint.  Pies haven't been found to spread you-know-what as of yet anyway.)

2.  GAS UNDER $2!!!  Friday,I got gas in McHenry, Illinois, for my Dakota at $2.05 (well, $2.04.9) and thought that was a great price.  But, yesterday, on our way over to Sunnyside in Johnsburg for St. Patrick's festivities, my eyes espied $1.86 at the Mobil station.  And, no lines.  We were getting down to below half a tank so filled up.  Never thought I'd see gas under $2 again.  But, I'm sure the virus will send it back up again.

Of course, back in 1970, had you told me I'd get excited about how low $1.86 was, I wouldn't have believed it.

3.  THE LAST PANIC--  Friday, I went to Meijer in McHenry for their fantastic Buy Ten for $10, Get One Free Deal.  This was in the afternoon and the first thing that should have tipped me off was the full parking lot.  Then, when I went in, there were only a couple shopping carts available and then I saw all those really, really full shopping carts.  Was there a hurricane on the way?

The last time I remember seeing a panic like this was back in the infamous Y2K.  Remember that?

NATIONAL PIG DAY--  **  And, they're so good... to eat.

SHARE A SMILE DAY-- **   Never hurts.

REFIRED NOT RETIRED DAY-- **   I guess this is about being retired.  I wish I had more time to enjoy it.  Time goes by so fast now.

DRESS IN BLUE DAY--  **  To raise money for cancer.  Problem for me is that blue was the color of Union uniforms during the war.

EMPLOYEE APPRECIATION DAY--  **  Nothing gets done without them.

NATIONAL BANANA CREAM PIE DAY--  **  I love most any kind of pie.

NATIONAL DOODLE DAY--  **  I've been known to do this.

OLD STUFF DAY--  **  Walk into my house and you know why I support this one.  Some say I support it too much.

NATIONAL READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY--  **  Also known as Dr. Seuss Day.  Reading is good.


MARCH 3

33 FLAVORS DAY--  **  As in ICE CREAM!!!!    Anniversary of the opening of the first Baskin-Robbins.

NATIONAL ANTHEM DAY--  **  When you-know-what officially became the National Anthem on March 3, 1931.  Reckon I'll be putting the flags out regardless of the major cold here on Sunday.

NATIONAL DAY OF UNPLUGGING--  **  Get unplugged from those 'putes and "idge" phones.

CLEAN OUT YOUR BOOKCASE DAY--  Dust it, wipe it down, arrange it, donate what you don't need.  I need to seriously dust my bookcases.  I should, but won't donate any books.  Sorry.  I like 'em, even if I haven't read them.

LOVE YOUR PET DAY--  Well over half of Americans have one or more.  My sister has lots of cats.  I mean, lots.  But I still have more books.  We've only had one pet, a dog named Brandy.

NATIONAL CHERRY PIE DAY--  What would Homer do?


FEBRUARY 21

CARD READING DAY--  If you've kept any that were sent over the years, time to pull it out and read it.  Brings back the memories, I reckon.

SINGLE TASKING DAY--  Multi-tasking causes mistakes and takes too much time.  I'm not listening to Chris Stapleton's "Traveller" right now.  Not much, anyway.

NATIONAL STICKY BUN DAY--  Loves my sticky buns.  Don't sit on them though.  Real messy.  Better to eat.

JANUARY 21--  Elementary School Teacher Day**  They get first shot at the kids.   Squirrel Appreciation Day**  They drive me nuts, but I love the lil' varmints.   National Hugging Day**   But no PDA, please.

JANUARY 22--   Come In From the Cold Day**  Warm is good.   National Polka Dot Day   National Hot Sauce Day   I don't think so.

JANUARY 23--  Library Shelfie Day**  Few things prettier than a shelf of books (unless a shelf of records or CDs.    National Pie Day**   I like pies better than cakes.

JANUARY 24--   Beer Can Appreciation Day**   Love "collecting" these.  Back in the 70s I had a pretty nice collection.   Clashing Clothes Day*8   Liz says I do this naturally.    National Peanut Butter Day**  Few things better.

1.  GIRL SCOUT COOKIES--  Looking high and low and all around, but can't find any Girl Scouts selling cookies.  I need my cookie fix.  Where are you?

2.  WHITE-OUT--  Tuesday we had snow which several times reached white-out level.  Unfortunately, I was driving in it.  Thankfully, nothing stuck.  Definitely ready for winter to be over now, but at least we don't live in the northeast.

3.  $3.14 PIES--  The last three days our local Jewel grocery store had apple pies for just $3.14.  That, of course, ended yesterday, March 14 for some reason.

Also called "Down East Lemon Pie."  Ritz Crackers, lemony custard made with sweetend condensed milk.

ATLANTIC BEACH PIE

Crook's Corner, Chapel Hill

Developed bu accident but on menu for good now.  A lemon pie.  Instead of meringue, use whipped cream.  Use saltines instead of Ritz Crackers

Most famous offering.  Using apple cider vinegar and lots of melted butter.  I don't know about this one.  The article has a recipe in case you want to try it.

Legendary and Landmark Pies of N.C.-- Part 4: Sweet Potato and Pumpkin Pie

SWEET POTATO PIE--  Mama Dip's, Chapel Hill

A Chapel fixture for over 40 years.  The pie has a custardy filling made with milk, eggs, melted butter and, of course, you-know-what.

PUMPKIN PIE--  Aboard the USS North Carolina

On Thanksgiving 1943, sailors on board the battleship USS North Carolina, stationed off the Gilbert Islands in the Pacific had a feast.  Baked ham, giblet gravy, shipped potatoes, Waldorf salad, Grench peas, Parker House rolls, pumpkin pie and ice cream.

For the pumpkin pie crust, baker Donald Ayer's recipe required 200 pounds of flour, 96 pounds of shortening and 6 pounds of salt.  The custardy filling included evaporated milk, sugar and eggs, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger.

BLUEBERRY PIE--  Olde Carolina Eatery, Burgaw

In a converted 100+ year-old drug store.  Pender County is home for the annual  N.C. Blueberry Festival, so, yep, they do grow famous blueberries.  And lots of them.

TOMATO PIE--  Smokey Shadows Lodge, Maggie Valley

A family-run lodge features a cheesy tomato pie.

PECAN PIE--  Creedmore

About the richest pie you'll ever eat.  But, for best, I'd have to go with Grandma Ebie's and Aunt Louise's pecan pies.

APPLEJACKS--  Wayne Couny Fair at fair time.  (Nope, not a cereal.)

Last year, a church folded, fried and sold more than 8,000 of 'em.  In case you're wondering, they are a crispy, just-fried apple hand pie, meaning you eat it without a fork... your hands.  I had one once at the Fremont Daffodil Festival.  Good eating anytime, anywhere.

GRAPE HULL PIE--  Duplin Winery, Rose Hill

N.C.'s oldest winery and largest by volume.  These are muscadine grapes and some don't become wine.  They become pies.

When it comes to desserts, pies are always at the top of my list.
