JULY 28, THURSDAY
Read the paper and had breakfast on the front porch and took a walk on the beach.
July 28th, Thursday.
The appraiser came over and looked at the condo and took a lot of pictures. Before and after he came I worked on Mom's memoirs, making corrections.
Closed the place up (and only left my I-Pad charger and wash cloth and bath towel). I went to the Topsail Beach Town Hall and had the water/garbage bill transferred to my name and then closed out the cable, telephone and wi-fi at Holly Ridge.
Stopped at Paul's Famous Hot Dogs (a family tradition) in Rocky Point, N.C.. Drove back to Goldsboro.
later that night, my brother Bob and I went to the Center Street Jam downtown and saw one of the hottest beach bands around these days, Jim Quick and Coastline, and ate at Torino's Mexican Restaurant. One mighty good steak nachos.

JSIS: Here's Looking At You-- Something You Don't See Every Day
JSIS-- Just Some Interesting Stuff
1. HERE'S LOOKING AT YOU-- A big-old giant eyeball was found washed up on the South Florida beach that has created quite a buzz. It is softball sized and blue. A man found it while taking a morning stroll along Pompano Beach, just north of Ft. Lauderdale. And, Liz gets mad when I come back from a beach stroll with a lot of shells.
Scientists think it came from a giant squid or really large sword fish. Perhaps Captain Jack's Kraken?
2. SOMETHING YOU DON'T SEE EVERY DAY-- Just in time for Halloween, after all the stores have been selling the stuff since August, but some folks in Los Angeles were pleasantly surprised to see a big old space shuttle, the Endeavour, on its way from LAX to the California Science Center.
The trip will take two days and along the way, there are diamond-shaped "Shuttle Xing" signs. I'd like to have one of those. That is as good as the "Caution: Low-Flying Airplanes on US-12 south of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin" or the "Tanking Crossing" signs at Camp Lejeune in NC.

Aye, 'Tis a Beach Life for Me-- Part 6
And, speaking of beaches, we then took a walk around the Carolina Beach boardwalk area, which to me refers to all the pedestrian-only streets down by where the old wooden boardwalk used to be. Parking on the streets and in some lots is available all the time AND FREE!! Hard to believe there would be free parking at the beach like that. Try to get that at a big beach in FLA.
Sad to see that the old bumper cars are now gone as is the old Landmark restaurant right at what is considered to be the heart of CB. We need to bring those back. I used to inflict a lot of pain to others in those bumper cars, especially on my brother Bob and sister Julie. However, my students paid me back in full at Great America in Gurnee in Illinois, when I made the mistake of going out and immediately became the target of everyone of the little imps. I was actually sore when I got off.
I had bought an Arcadia book at Fort Fisher featuring postcards of Carolina Beach from the early 1900s to 1960s with a lot of history. This beach has been important to my family dating all the way back to when my grandparents had that pre-Hazel cottage and then, we still spent a lot of weeks there during summers in rented cottages and even camped out several times at a campground at Snow's Cut (which connects the Cape Fear River with the sounds along the coast as part of the Intercoastal waterway).

Aye, 'Tis a Beach Life for Me-- Pt. 1
THURSDAY, JULY 12TH
Recovering from the long drive and enjoying the new deck at the Topsail Arms at the south end of Topsail Island. Took a long walk along the beach and found quite a few interesting shells and the "lima bean" stones.
Did some wading in the water and pitched the umbrella for some beach reading.
FRIDAY, JULY 13TH
Another walk on the beach. The waves have created a nice tidal pool which is always a special place.
Highlight of today was the arrival of my Aunt Louise, Cousin Debbie and her husband Rob, Aunt Louise still lives in Mt. Olive. Rob and Debbie are now from Petersburg, Virginia. Rob is retired and Debbie still works. We had a great lunch that Mom prepared of shrimp and crabcakes.
Rob is a history buff like me and says his house is on land that was formerly City Point which was the huge Union supply depot during the Civil War. he once found a canteen while digging in his yard. Later this month he goes on an archaeological dig at the site of an early 19th century pottery place.
After they left, I went over to Surf City's Sound Side Park where the Uncle Harry Band was playing at the band shell. On the way back, I picked up a two-liter bottle of Cheerwine pop, a NC classic.

To Topsail Beach, NC
I did get to go to one of my favorite places, Topsail Beach, North Carolina. Mom has a town home there on the second row, meaning that it is in the second row of homes from the ocean. Just a row of cottages and a street separating it. But with the way the ocean is coming in, who knows, it might get to be front row, as Bob Uecker would say.
MARCH 23RD
Took US-117 to the extension to I-40 all the way to Rocky Point near Wilmington where we got off I-40 and back on US-117 to Paul's Place for some of their great hot dogs (since the 1920s).
Then to the place. Watched the NCAA games.
MARCH 24TH
Hit and miss with the weather. Sunny then threatening, then rain off and on. Spent time out on deck and taking stuff down from outside walls as the decks, stairs and exterior are to be replaced starting Monday.
Friend and Topsail Beach Commissioner Julian Bone stopped by and said there will be beach replenishment with sand taken from Topsail Inlet to deepen it.
We were going to go into Holly Springs to eat, but had a huge downpour and the roads in Topsail Beach and Surf City really get flooded when that happens so stayed in and Mom made up her famous spaghetti. Watched more b-ball games. Real big storm after midnight.
MARCH 25TH
Took a long walk on the beach with lots of jellyfish washed up on it. Watched some of the Kentucky game but a blow out so stopped. Enjoyed some more deck time before leaving.

Worst Day So Far
Sitting outside the room right now, with the sound of Gulf waves washing ashore about sixty yards away and the smell of salt in the air.
Considerably cooler this morning, but warming up nicely to a high of 74 degrees. It was overcast, but the sun is peaking through. It has been sunny and warm since we arrived Friday afternoon. Hard to believe we have just two full days left before time to go home.
But then again, I see that we're under a winter storm warning again with temps in the lower 30s and 3-5 inches. Maybe I'll stay a little longer.
Some company must have beach concessions as they are setting up hundreds of wooden chaise lounges by the water. They bare going up and down the beach in loaded pick up trucks.
Figure on catching some sun before going over to the Sandpiper Tiki Bar later to play NTN/Buzztime, drink buck drafts and listen to a performer.
I can think of worse ways of spending an afternoon, like shoveling snow.

Getting Ready for the Beach
Heading down to Panama City Beach and hoping for better weather than we had last year which was way too cold for me. All the regular snowbirds there said it was the coldest winter they ever remember.
But, hey, it was still 20 to 40 degrees warmer than here in Northern Illinois.
We have reservations at the usual place, the Driftwood Inn, where we have stayed the last three years now. Out idea of a great place on the beach, a smaller mom and pop operation. Forget those huge towers.
We stay at what they call the cabana rooms. Walk out the door to the room and the next place going south is the Gulf of Mexico. And the price, $57 a day is very reasonable.
One trip this month to Florida wasn't enough for me, even with 40 to 50 degree weather forecast for here over the next several days.

QUESTIONABLE HEADLINE-- Local High School Dropouts Cut in Half (Well, that seems to be just a bit severe for punishment.)

Beachin' It-- Part 3
Unfortunately, Topsail Beach two major eateries, the Beach Cafe and Breezeway are both very expensive. It costs around $15 for a plate of seafood, although the view of the sound and hush puppies at the Breezeway are outstanding and the food is good.
Unfortunately, the last several times we've been to the Beach Cafe, the food was not that good. On top of that, there wasn't much of it. Expensive, meager, and blah just doesn't make it.
Neither place was open in March.
However, cousin Graham suggested the Seahorse, located a mile from the beach in Surf City on the other side of the sound and swing bridge.
We got the small platter which was $9 and came with two sides. Lots of food for that price and very good.
The place to go by Topsail Island, the Seahorse.
Now, That's Some Good Eating. --RoadDog

Beachin' It
This past Sunday to Tuesday, I was at Topsail Beach, North Carolina.
My mom's town home is on the second row with views of the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the sound to the west. Sunrises and sunset that way. Second row means that it is not oceanfront.
My cousin Graham has the next door town home of the six. They were built in 1976 and he bought in 1979.
This is a great place for family reunions.
WAY TOO COOL
Unfortunately, this was not the greatest of weather visits. After the warmth of Saturday, it continued all the way to the beach and about two hours after we arrived. I was out on the deck trying to find a Beach Music station and reading the Wilmington News-Star when the cold front blew in and I had to come in.
It stayed cool and windy and a bit overcast Monday. Tuesday was sunny, but still a lot of cold when you weren't behind a wind block. I was fairly comfortable behind the partition between the decks.

On Da Beach
We're at Topsail Beach, NC, right now, on a sunny day. Took a walk out to the beach and saw two guys fishing off the walkway over the dunes. It's ebbing tide at 8:02 am and the waves are crashing right up to the base of the sand dunes which are partly washed away after two days of a nor'easter Wednesday and Thursday. Julian said the nor'easter did more damage than Hurricane Hannah a few weeks ago.
Hope to get out on the beach if there is more sand available for sitting. All we've seen is high tide so far.
