Guns, Oldies and DaBears Weekend-- Part 2

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 14

Went to McDonald's for their 2 for $4 bacon, egg and cheese biscuits.  We like those a lot.  A perfect day weatherwise, even as the Chain was closing down because of the flooding.  Sure glad we got out of boating earlier this summer as the Chain has been closed or no wake for almost half the time this year.

Enjoyed WXRT's Saturday Morning Flashback to 1982 and did some yard work.

We went to the SAL gun raffle at the Fox Lake American Legion and met Glenn and Barb and enjoyed Mitch Edwards until 6 and then the oldies band Looney Train.  Went over to Stucky's in Johnsburg where Uncle Will and the Wayback Machine were playing oldies.

Liz and I definitely love our oldies music.  Perhaps because we are OLD!!

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15

Well, we had rain all night.  Just what we needed with all the flooding.  Listened to Bob Stroud's Rock and Roll Roots show on the Drive from 7 to 10 a.m.and recorded Terri Hemmert's Breakfast With the Beatles on WXRT.  I do this most Sunday mornings.  Sat out in the gazebo and read the Chicago Tribune.

The Bears played at 3:30 p.m. and we drove over to the Squaw Bar in Ingleside on Squaw Creek only to find the whole rear of the place flooded and the front parking lot full, so didn't go in.  Went to the Fox Lake American Legion on Nippersink Lake and all its piers were under water, but a dry parking lot so watched the first quarter of the Bears game.

Then went to Sunnyside Tavern in Johnsburg and found seats at the bar and watched the rest of the Bears-Denver Broncos game.  That last 31 seconds was something else and the Bears kicked a field goal to win 16-14 as time expired.

So, It's World Series Time

Well, the two teams I was pulling for in the NL and AL Championship Series both lost.  I definitely was hoping the Brewers would go to the World Series.  I have been a fan of theirs for most of the time they've been a team and liked them better in the American League.

Their 1982 team is one of my all-time favorites and they would have beaten the Cardinals in that World Series had Rollie Fingers not gotten hurt.

But, anyway,  who to pull for now.

Since I am a White Sox fan and primarily an American League fan (unless the Yankees go to the World Series), I reckon I'll pull for the Red Sox and especially since they will be starting Chris Sale, who used to be with the White Sox, tonight.

I've never been a big Dodger fan either.

My buddy Kevin is also torn.  Being from Brooklyn and New York City, he hates the Red Sox.  BUT, he really hates the Dodgers more for leaving Brooklyn to move out west.  That broke their hearts.

Rock 'N' Roll's Most Revolutionary Year-- Part 1

Answering this question brings lots of responses.

Some might say 1954, the year Bill Haley & His Comets recorded "Rock Around the Clock" and when Elvis Presley first stepped into Sam Phillips' Sun Studio.

Others might say it was 1964 when Beatlemania exploded onto the world and launched the British Invasion.

Some might say 1967 with the Summer of Love, the blossoming of Flower Power and psychedelic music.  Not to mention the Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album.

Still, others would say 1977 with the arrival of that "young, loud, snotty" music called punk rock.

Then there is the case of 1982 with Grand master Flash & the Furious Five's "The Message," putting rap music on the national map.

More recently, the year 2001 saw the birth of iTunes and redefined -- as well as broadened -- how we listen to music.

Of the ones listed here, I would have to say 1964.

A Pretty Good Vacation Thirty Years Ago-- Part 2

Went jogging in the morning.  Cousin Graham called to say the Civil War man could see us before 3 PM, so Dad drove me to Graham's Western Auto store in Warsaw, NC, and we followed him out to the man's place, which was fortunate because it was way out in the woods, so to speak.

I'll write about this meeting in my Saw the Elephant blog.  His name was Claude Moore.

After meeting with him, Dad drove back to his hometown, Mt. Olive, and we had barbecue "at a place on main street called Cannon's.  Their 'que was almost as good as Wilber's and Dad said the place, which was pretty much barren of any decor, had not changed since he was a boy.  Two of the waitresses came over and asked if he was Buster which is quite something considering he hasn't lived there for 30 years.

Next stop was Aunt Ada's.  We caught her by surprise.  Her place is picture perfect, nothing out of place.  She had pictures of her father and mother and her mother's mother and father which we had copied at the Mt. Olive copy place..  We went by Aunt Doll's place, but she wasn't home.

Ebie and NorNor's place (my father's parents) looks the best I've ever seen from the outside.  Uncle Delbert is recovering from the accident which claimed his mother-in-law's life.  They finally caught the guy who did it; he left the scene and he was a migrant worker, not speaking English or having insurance.  He needs to go to jail for a long time."

Now that my dad is no longer with us, I sure would like to go for a drive with him again.  But this brings back the memories of that day.

Going Back to My 1982: January

I finally got to read my journal from 1982.  I started it in 1978 (and wish I had started it back into at least the sixties).  I still continue with it, so that puts it going on 34 years of my life.  It is a hassle to make the entries, but great to read what I was doing back then.  I would have forgotten most of it.

January 1982 was a busy and key month in my life.

First off, it was very, very, very cold and we got a lot of snow.  I did a lot of complaining about it.  I was also jogging back then, sometimes in the school hallways.  Evidently, my classes were not the best as I also was having problems with quite a few kids.

I kept score at a lot of basketball games for our middle school teams.  And, I was especially amazed at how many times I'd be out to midnight and even 2 AM and still go to school the enxt day.  I sure couldn't do that anymore.

But, the key thing that happened to me was deejaying which I'll talk about tomorrow,
