JSS: So Tired of Black Friday-- That 70s Music on the Drive-- First Christmas Radio, Now Christmas TV?-- Christmas Toilet Paper?

JSS--  Just Some Stuff.

1.  SO TIRED OF BLACK FRIDAY--  I will be so glad when today is over.  For the last that is just about all I've been hearing.  Black Friday, Black Friday, Black Friday.  Give me a break.  And, we didn't even go out of the house so you wasted all that advertising money on us.

2.  THAT 70S MUSIC ON THE DRIVE--  In case you really like the music from the 1970s, Chicago's  WDRV 97.1 FM the Drive, is playing music from 1976 today.  Tomorrow its 1977 and Sunday 1978.  It streams.

3. FIRST CHRISTMAS RADIO, NOW CHRISTMAS TV?--  Of course, some of the Christmas radio stations fired up on Nov. 1 and all are going now.  Now, we have two cable channels showing pretty much nothing but Christmas movies.  Lifetime and Hallmark.  I've heard that most of these movies have pretty much the same plot.  I haven't seen any yet, but might just have to watch some to make up my mind on them.

4.  CHRISTMAS TOILET PAPER?--  And this pushes the boundaries a bit much.  Charmin even has a Christmas toilet paper song.  We've sure come a long way since "Please don't squeeze the Charmin."

Sunday was Bob Stroud's Final Rock and Roll Roots Salute to the Summer of 1976.  Part 4.  It was the songs you were hearing on the radio and playing on your stereo.

I was just starting my 4th year of teaching 7th and 8th graders geography and history at John T. Magee Middle School in Round Lake, Illinois.  We were enjoying the second year living in our first house in Round Lake Beach.  Liz was working at Beach Elementary School in Round Lake Beach, so we did not have far to drive to work.

Bob Stroud did his third part of his annual trip back to the songs of 40 years ago this past Sunday on his Rock and Roll Roots Show on Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM.  He goes back the 40 years on the first Sundays of June, July, August and September and plays the songs you'd be hearing on the radio and on your albums back then.

I was finishing the last of my summer enjoyment before starting my fourth year of teaching in Round Lake, Illinois, at Magee Middle School.  We had also been in our new house in Round Lake Beach where we had been living since 1975.  We bought it for $33,000 which was a real lot of music for us back then.

STILL THE ONE--  ORLEANS--  We lost a great vocalist this year, the group's Larry Hoppen.  (I only heard a couple of their songs on the radio, including this one.  But, I recently bought their greatest hit album and there is a lot of great stuff on it.  Kind of a mix of Doobie Bros./Eagles.)
THE WRECK OF THE EDMUND FITZGERALD--  GORDON LIGHTFOOT--  (Song about the last big ship to sink on the Great Lakes.  I used to do a three-day mini-lesson on the ship with a Great Lakes tie-in and the song.  We'd map out the places he mentioned.  The wreck anniversary is coming up early next month.)

Where Were You October 7, 1976?-- Part 1

Last Sunday, Bob Stroud did a Time Warp back to Oct. 7th for both 1966 and 1976 on his Rock and Roll Roots show.  I love those Time Warps as it is a slice of my history and always brings back memories.

October 7, 1976, I was early on in my 4th year of teaching and now tenured.  I was teaching quarterly elective classes in geography at Magee Middle School in Round Lake, Illinois.  We were enjoying the new home at 1013 Morningside in Round Lake Beach, Illinois, that we bought for $33,000, a real whole lot of money back then.  I was developing a green thumb for the yard, which I kept in good shape for the dog, Brandy so she would have a place to run and bark at other dogs will the gall to walk by.

We had some real great neighbors that we always got together with and became good friends with.

Kicked off our extended Fourth of July celebration Friday.  As usual, it was good times in the area.

FRIDAY

No boating today, but did hit two places on the Chain Crawl and had our passports stamped.  Met Kevin and Kelly, who are also on the Crawl, at the Lagoon Lounge on US-12 in Fox Lake for a couple three beers.  It shares the lagoon with McDonald's.

Then, we actually found that the NAC (National Athletic Club) on Fox Lake was open and we high-tailed it over there for a couple more.  They have been closed the last six times we've wanted to go.  It is a private club and only open sometimes.  It goes way back, being founded in the 1880s.

Then to the usual Friday spots, Stormy Monday on Fox Lake and the American Legion on Nippersink Lake.


SATURDAY

Drove to Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, about ten miles away, and enjoyed Ultimate Bloody Marys at Main Street and watched the 4th of July parade outside the place.  Then to Donovan's Reef and ended up at the Wilmot Riverside Bar and Grill.  We haven't been back but once since Dave and Mar sold it a couple years ago.  It used to be Mar's Trading Post Inn and the foundation of the place goes back to the 1840s when it actually was a trading post.

SUNDAY

Drove over to McCullon Lake to All Sports Bar and had one of the best pizzas around for $5 and $5 pitchers of Miller Lite.  Then to Captain's Quarters on Fox Lake for the Average Joe Band outside.  Met our friends from Crabapple Island.
