Our 49th Wedding Anniversary-- Part 9: A 'Great" Morning at a Mom and Pop Motel

Continued from November 13th.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 2022

Got my coffee from the office as well as a free copy of today's Dubuque (Iowa) Telegraph-Herald.  The price of it is now $1.50 Monday to Saturday.  A little bit higher but definitely better than the Chicago tribune which is now $4 daily.  I will be cancelling my subscription, sadly, soon.  I love having a print paper in my hand, but not at $140 every two months.

Sat outside the room, had my coffee and read the paper.  Now that's good living to me.

The neighbors in Room 14 left for breakfast and a boat ride  in Dubuque, but will not be coming back to the motel.  Too bad, we sure had a nice conversation with them last night.  Those old Mom and Pop motels are very conducive to sitting outside your room and talking with fellow travelers, something you can't do in newer motels.

I watched some of "South Park," a really funny adult cartoon show which unfortunately attracts a lot of kids to watch it.  It is hilarious, but things they talk about and cursing should not be for kids.

New TV Season Begins This Week-- Part 1: Sundays

And, I watch way too much TV to go along with my way too much blogging.  Oh well, keeps me busy.

I like my TV shows and watch a whole lot of them from 7 to 10 p.m. five nights a week.  I do not usually watch any TV on Saturday and Monday nights, nothing on I want to see.   I do not usually include new shows at this point until I've seen them a few times.

SUNDAYS

This is my night for "Animation Domination" on Fox.  I am o happy they are returning to four straight animated comedies, instead of the three they've been having.  This is also pretty much the only time I watch Fox during the week unless they have a sporting event or DA Bears.  Times are Central.

7--  The Simpsons
7:30--  Bless the Harts  (New show, but I'll go ahead and figure I'll like it.)
8--  Bob's Burgers
8:30--  Family Guy

I also like America's Funniest Videos on ABC at 6 p.m. and NCIS: Los Angeles on CBS at 9 p.m..

DONALD DUCK DAY--  **   His first appearance.  Was it June 9, 1934 or March 13.  Go ahead celebrate both days.  Yell extra loud during the "Mickey Mouse Club" march.

EARMUFF DAY--  **  Well, hopefully we won't be needing them for awhile.

K-9 VETERANS DAY--  **  Definitely, they deserve to be acknowledged.

NATIONAL OPEN AN UMBRELLA INDOORS DAY--  Isn't that bad luck?  I don't think so.


MARCH 14

PI DAY--  I've got a feeling these don't come with ala mode.  Something about 314?

NATIONAL POTATO CHIP DAY--  **   Oh Boy!!!  Potato chips!!!!

NATIONAL SAVE A SPIDER DAY--  Spiders are ok as long as they are outside.  Inside and they'd just better beware.

Deaths: "Underdog" No More

WILLIAM WALT BIGGERS, 85

Went by the name "Buck" Biggers, died Feb. 10, 2013.

Co-created the caped superhero who continually rescued his girlfriend, Sweet Polly Purebread, from danger.  Normally a mild-mannered shoeshine canine, when he'd hear her cries, he'd go to a phone booth and then, "Underdog."

The cartoon show premiered in 1964 and I was a big fan.  I loved his speaking in simple rhymes, the best of which was "There's no need to fear, (finish it)."  Underdog was voiced by comic actor Wally Cox.

Mr. Biggers was working for the New York City advertising agency DFS and asked to create a series of cartoons to promote breakfast cereals for client General Mills.  His most famous was "Underdog" but he also helped create "Tennessee Tuxedo and His Tales."

Buck Biggers later became vice president of promotion and creative services for NBC.  He also held the "Underdog Franchise."  Macy's had the Underdog Balloon in their parade and there was a 2007 live action film of one of our favorite pooches.

"Speed Bump" The Cartoon- Labor Day Weekend

Today's " Speed Bump" cartoon was funny. You saw a cave man cooking over a grill and behind him, a cave woman is saying to a caveman, "After he discovered "fire," he invented "The Weekend."

Well, we just had an extended weekend called Labor Day Weekend. I used to REALLY look forward to these three days off as a break from the early hassles of the new school year. I used to make definite plans around it.

But, for some reason, it's just not that big of a deal anymore. It's just another weekend. Or, I'd even go so far as to say, it's just another day.

I wonder why that is?

OH, YES, IT JUST DAWNED ON ME. I BE RETIRED!!!!!!!!! HOW 'BOUT DAT!!!!! Every day is a holiday. I'll just have to learn to live with it.

D-oh!! A New Fan of the Simpsons

I'm really pulling for Springfield, Illinois, to get to host the grand opening of the new "Simpsons" movie in July (see other blog).

I did not like, nor would I watch that show until about three years ago. As a teacher, we REALLY had a problem with the kids, my seventh graders in particular, who were so chock full of Bartisms like" "Eat My Shorts", "Cowabunga", and "Don't Have a Cow, man". That just didn't make it in the classroom, and were they ever using it.

However, I have outgrown it, and now watch such shows as "South Park", "American Dad", and "Family Guy", which, I must admit, I like as well. By the way, young kids should not be allowed to watch these shows. Although they are in cartoon form and feature kids, these are definitely adult themed and make the "Simpsons" look like "Father Knows Best" in comparison.

The Simpsons, which just completed its 18th season and 400th episode is actually getting better. I've seen some of the earlier ones and they don't stack up well with the new stuff. Bart hardly ever gets away when he does something bad. Homer, on the other hand, generally does. I also really like the characters on the show. I also get a kick on what Bart is writing on the blackboard and the couch scene at the beginning of each show.
