Indy 500 Winner Rossi Got the 2% Milk-- Part 1: Louis Meyer Started It

"After you've been in a blazing hot car traveling in excess of 200 mph, there's nothing you want more than a glass of milk.  Or, at least that is so the venerable Indianapolis tradition goes.

"In 1936, Louis Meyer requested a glass of buttermilk after winning his third race and the rest is history.

"Buttermilk is no longer offered, but drivers do get to choose between whole, 2 percent and fat-free.  Every driver records their preference before the race in case they win, and the milk is kept on ice to be drunk (and often dumped on the driver's head) in victory lane.

"This year, whole milk led the way with 17 requests.  Next came 2 percent with 13 drivers opting for the lower-fat option. One of these was Alexander Rossi.   Just three drivers--  Charles Kimball, Pippa Mann and Spencer Pigot-- went fat-free.

Blackhawks Parade and Rally-- Part 10: It's a Kissing Thing

Without a doubt, the Stanley Cup has to be the ugliest championship trophy in all the professinal leagues. Usually the bowl part of the trophy is the largest, but not on this one, which makes it stand out all the more. 

And, another player tradition is to hoist it into the the air, lower it to the face and kiss it. Can you imagine the germs?

But, then again, while I was at the Indy 500 at the end of May, I noticed many folks getting down on their knees to kiss the bricks that extend into the infield area from the track which marks the beginning and finish line of the race.  I understand racers kiss it as well.

I did wonder what was on the bottom of the Stanley Cup trophy and saw that there is a piece of plastic down there, indented in enough so that there is a place to put the finger grasp for the hoisters. I imagine I'd kiss it if I got the chance, undeserving as I am.

It's a College Football Thing: Toomer's Corner-- ECU-- Lame Name

Some recent news.


1.  TOOMER'S CORNER--  From the 4-21-13 Dr. Saturday.  Auburn fans roll Toomer's Corner oaks one last time on April 20th after a record crowd of 83,401 watched the annual spring game (and poor old NIU couldn't get that many in a six game season).

This was to be the last time for the current trees, or what's left of them after an Alabama fan poisoned them two years ago.  The city is going to cut them down, but have no fear, new trees will be planted and until they are strong enough, wires will be strung at the Corner on football weekends.

Poisoning the trees was a horrible thing, regardless of how much you hate the other team.


2.  ECU--  My second favorite college football team is East Carolina.  At their April spring game, they made a kid with a life-threatening disease's day when they suited him up and let him run for a touchdown with the whole team in pursuit.  I saw that several other teams did that as well.  Now, that's a real nice thing.


3.  LAME NAME--  The new college four team playoff system for the national championship is going to be called "The College Football Playoff."  The ad company who came up with that sure phoned that one in.  I think a better name would have been "The Big Money Bowl Series."  Plus, it should have been 16 teams instead of 4.

What's the "nog" in the egg nog.

Since I won't be posting tomorrow, it being a Sunday and Christmas at the same time, here's a Christmas-related story.

A typical cup of egg nog has 343 calories of all the worst sort of stuff for you, but, it's tradition and good-tasting as well.

This liquid doughnut consists of eggs, sugar, cream, milk, nutmeg and vanilla. The nog is for the liquor you put in it.

We like brandy, but whiskey will do in a pinch. Liz bought our egg nog yesterday. We drink out of glasses we have had since 1973 when we toasted with Liz's parents. Both of them are no longer with us and one of the four glasses broke and was thrown out a long time ago.

So, the two of us will drink out of there glasses, one for her parents.

Cutting Down Those NCAA Nets
