Every Blooming THing, Late July 2019

Our yard is at its most colorful and beautiful right now and this will continue well into August.

Right now, the daylillies and tall phlox are blooming, along with the hosta, some of the mums, wild daisies, bee balm and some kind of a pink perennial.  By far, the most striking are the black-eyes Susans and purple coneflowers.  Also, there is some kind of a tall, small flowered yellow sunflower plant in bloom as well.

And, we're talking about hundreds of these plants.

We've finally reached the dry season and I gave to be watering lots of flowers in pots and hanging baskets.

And, then there are those pesky Japanese beetles who continue to eat my plants but pay the price.

"Sweet Caroline"

No More Boating for Us-- Part 1: Woe Is My Boat

This past week, Liz and I entered a new era.  We no longer have a boat.  That is after 33 years and three boats, two of which we bought new.

There were several reasons for this.  One is that we are just getting kinda old.  Climbing in and out of the boat (an open bow 19-footer) seems to be getting a bit harder.  Plus, bad boating weather with cold springs, flooding and way too hot on occasions has eaten into boating time in a big way.  Also, we didn't get the boat into the water until July the past seven years.

We found out about a local boat/car detailing place which sells boats on commission and take car of the whole selling of the boat, including making sure it is in good shape and going out on test runs.  This made the whole selling of the boat much easier.

We sold the 2003 Bayliner which we bought for $13,000 back then.  We had 15 years of great times on it.  We don't count last year as we never had it in the water, between a late start as usual and repairs.

Died March 25, 2019

Original member and singer with group from Canton, Ohio.    Featured on songs "Lonely Drifter" (#93-1963) and "Lipstick Traces (On a Cigarette)"  (#48-1965) which are long-time Beach Music favorites.  Quit the group in 1965 and was group's tour manager when they had their biggest hits in the early 1970s with "Back Stabbers" and "Love Train" and others.

English musician and member of English Beat and General Public.  Had a big hit in 1985 with "Tenderness" (#27).  This is a really great song.  Give it a listen on You Tube under General Public.

Ska influenced and know for his Jamaican-style "Toasting" which is sort of rapping, but in a reggae style.

Be sure to listen to him as a member of English Beat doing "Full Stop,"  "Mirror in the Bathroom" and "Can't Get Used to Losing You."

1.  OK, CALL IT GLOBAL WARMING--  After this past two weeks, go ahead and call it Global Warming.  You'll get no argument from me.

2.  JAPANESE BEETLES--  They're back.  But their numbers don't approach anything like in their heyday ten years ago.  They do two things, eat and procreate.  I often find one on top of another and they are prime targets.  They can't move fast and at least I know I get a female so no eggs and new beetles from her.

3.  LONG DISTANCE, PLEASE--  I read that President Nixon called the Apollo 11 folks fifty years ago.  Hopefully he had a REAL lot of quarters, dimes and nickels to cover THOSE long distance charges in 1969!!   Another quarter, please.

I remember calling Liz in Illinois when my family was on vacation in North Carolina when I was in high school and college.  I would have to gave a pocketful of change.  It seemed that every few minutes the operator was asking for more money.  This was an expensive thing to do.

So, What Were You Doing Fifty Years Ago?-- Part 2 Man on the Moon

On the actual day of the Moon landing, I posted about Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landing on the Moon at 4:17:40 Eastern Time on July 20, 1969.  But, for some reason I always felt it was really late at night when Armstrong stepped out of the module and onto the Moon's surface.

Obviously, that time was not late at night.  Is my mind slipping?

Well, in yesterday's Chicago Tribune I found out that 4:17 p.m. was when the module landed on the Moon's surface.  Neil Armstrong did not exit it and step on the Moon's surface until 10:56 p.m. EDT.

So, my mind is still here, at least somewhat.

So, What Were You Doing Fifty Years Ago?

Well, if you were alive, at least part of the time you were parked in front of your black and white 19-inch TV ( a few lucky folks had color TVs and maybe even as big as 25 inches.

This was too big of a show to miss.  The actual landing took place at 20.17:14 UT, but for us who don't know what that is, it took place at 4:17:40 Eastern Daylight Time.  Man stayed on the Moon for two and a half hours, so definitely watching during this time.

Man on the Moon Tomorrow, Fifty Years Ago

Fifty years ago it was all everyone seemed to be talking about.  Something that I never figured would happen.  Man on the Moon.

I was on vacation in North Carolina and staying over at Ronnie Creel's house for the night.  We stayed up watching it on his black and white TV.  And we, being eighteen-year-olds, were not talking about girls that night, but the space program.  If I remember correctly, Keith Hood was also there.

The day before, Keith had gotten in big trouble with his dad when the three of us sank a boat  in a local swamp.  We were puling it over some logs and tree stumps and one  of them yelled, "Snake!!."

This caused all three of us to jump into the boat and send a branch through its bottom.  We had quite some time getting the boat out of that swamp, waterlogged as it was.

Anyway, that event had been forgotten as we watched that flickering reception from the moon.

Chicago Cubs Success Breeds Haters, But Not Me

It was probably inevitable, but the success of the Cubbies has brought about the haters.  Now, not just certain White Sox fans or Cardinal fans,  but people across the nation.

Data from Twitter suggests that the Cubs are now second only to the New York Yankees in the hatred in the hearts of folks.  The Yankees are the most-hated baseball team in 28 states while the Cubs are a distant second with 8.

I have always disliked the Yankees.  Why, I don't even like the name.  But they have been a bane to my White Sox for too many years to list.  If I was at a Sox game against the Yankees and the Yankee pitcher was throwing a perfect game or a no-hitter, I would seriously have to consider whether I'd be pulling for him.  Well, I would pull for him, but only after much soul searching.

Some Cub-hating states are obvious, like Wisconsin (the Brewers) and Missouri (the Cardinals).  But other states not keen on the North Siders are Iowa, Indiana, Arkansas, Nevada, Wyoming and South Dakota.  South Dakota?

Other "hateable" teams are Dodgers (5 states), Cardinals and Mets (4 apiece) and Red Sox (1).

I am not a Cubs hater.  As a matter of fact I am a big Cub fan unless they play the White Sox.

Eagles' "Greatest Hits 1971-1975" Tops "Thriller" as No. 1

From the August 21, 2018, Chicago Sun-Times by Mesfin Fekadu, AP.

"The Eagles' greatest hits album (which includes that Route 66 favorite 'Take It Easy" where he was 'Standing on the corner in Winslow, Arizona) has moonwalked past Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' to become history's best-selling album of all-time in the U.S.."

The Recording Industry Association of America said the Eagles' album is  now certified 38x platinum, which means sales and streams of it have reached 39 million copies.  The album was released in 1976.

RIAA's platinum status was once equivalent to selling 1 million albums or singles, but in 2013, the company began incorporating streaming from YouTube, Spotify and other digital musical services.  Now 1,500 streams of an album is equivalent to an album sale.

The Eagles formed in Los Angeles in the early 1970s.  Co-founder Glenn Frey died in 2016.

By teh way, the Eagles' "Hotel California" is No. 3.
