Wisconsin and Johnsburg

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1

As usual, we're going to Donovan's Reef in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, to play trivia with Uncle Jeffie and enjoy those great half price happy hour drinks.

THURSDAY, JUNE 2

Drove to Bristol, Wisconsn, and met the Magee teachers for breakfast, something we do once a month.  It is good to see an d talk wih folks I worked with all those many years ago.

The gas gouge is really hitting hard right now with gas in Spring Grove, Illinois, at $5.56.

That evening, we went to Stucky's in Johnsburg, Illinois, and enjoyed listening to Jim Seig and all the others at Open Mic.

The 2022 Indy 500

MAY 29, 2022, Sunday

We had two flyovers, one with Jim Cornelison singing "Back Home Again in Indiana" and then, of course "The Star-Spangled Banner."  Jim Cornelison has evidently inherited the honor of singing this song from the late Jim Nabors.  Of course, he is a Chicago Blackhawk favorite as he sings the National Anthem for home games.

My favorite Indy racer is Alexander Rossi and he was all the way back in the 7th row, so, as they say, he had quite a road to hoe.  He ended up finishing fifth, 4.9 seconds behind first place winner Marcus Ericsson.  None of us had ever heard of Marcus Ericsson, but we know him now.

Congrats to Marcus Ericcson.

Stuck around to watch the award and victory lap as well as the kissing of the yard of bricks at the start/finish line and to let more of the people leave.

Went back to the RV, but when we went over to the Legion for cocktails, they had already closed so we were forced to have our drinks at the RV, bbq some meat and talk aout the race.

Paul and I tried to stay up and watch the replay of the race, but only made it half way through before we had to go to sleep.  We think it might be because we're getting old or sitting out in the sun that long.

I will be writing in a lot more detail about the Indy 500 in my RoadDog's RoadLog blog at some point in the future.

Indy Here We Come: Race Day Arrives

Continued from June 11.

SUNDAY, MAY 29

Race Day is here.  The Indy 500, and my 10th straight trip to see it (other than, of course 2020 when no spectators were allowed inside the track).  I never thought I'd get hooked on any kind of car racing, but must admit I'm into Indy Car now.

We just have to cross the street from the Legion and we are there.  But then, its a long walk to get to our seats, which now cost $215.  I never thought I'd pay that much for any ticket either.  But, its the Greatest Spectacle in Racing as they say.

The, there are those mean old horrible stairs to clmb.  Those have been wearing me out ever since I first went.  I can take them when there is a crowd and a few steps at a time, but straight up, no.  It took me two stops this time to get the numbness gone in my knees.

The Indy 500 is  strange because they allow you to bring beer cans and plastic bottles in.  However, I don't drink anything until the last quarter of the race as there is no way I am going down and back up those stairs.

The Indy 500, in addition to bing a car race is also probably the biggest salute to our military in the whole country.  The opening ceremonies are all about them.

Every Blooming THing, Mid June

The yard has been ablaze in purples and whites the last three weeks as the tall wild phlox and daisies have been blooming.  I must have several hundred of each.  I even have clumps of daisies growing in the yard in about 12 places.

In addition, the Japanese lilacs are now in bloom with those massive white flower bunches.  The peonies are also blooming.  Also, my Missouri primrose is blooming as is a perennial which has yellow flowers blooming on its spike (but I don't know the name of it).

I have started trimming bushes and will tell you sincerely that I planted way too many of the yews.  Plus, I have way too many burning bushes.  I have been and still am cutting down weed trees andother wild growth.

This past Sunday I talked with a friend at the McHenry Legion who has a landscaping service and will have him come over an do some serious tree trimming.

When I started planting all this stuff in 1993, I was still a somewhat healthy 42-year-old and it never occurred to me that one day I might be getting too old to do all the work.  Well, it has now iccurred to me.  In addition, I spend way too much time on these blogs.

I am hoping that I will be able to continue cutting the grass what with gas prices around $5.80.

It's Getting Tougher, You Know.  --RoadDog

WLS Top 30 for Week of June 12, 1972-- Part 1: 'How Do You Do'

And, if you're really into 1972 (like me), Bob Stroud is doing his annual salute to Summer 50 Years ago today.  That would make it 1972.  He is playing music on the radio and in your record collection.  He is on Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM, the Drive today.  It streams.  All times Central.  The whole show will be on again tonight from 9 pm to midnight.

He will be playing many of these songs.

Indy Here We Come: Indy 500, Speedway Main Street, Bars, Bands and Lots of Walking

FRIDAY, MAY 27

It was off to my 10th straight trip to the Indy 500 Race in Indianapolis (well, Speedway, Indiana).  Met Sue, Paul and Michelle in Ingleside and they drove their RV there.

After setting up at the American Legion right across from the track, we walked over to Main Street of Speedway where they were having a street festival.  They went over to Daredevil Brewing and I had a coupla beers at Barbecue and Bourbon.

Back to the RV and our own little barbecue and then  had a great time with the band in the Legion.

*******************************

SATURDAY, MAY 28

A warmer and nicer day than yesterday.  No rain.  We went over to the Speedway for Legends Day where, for $10 entrance you get to walk the track, Gasoline Alley and go to the exhibitors.  And, of course, spend money on souvenirs.  I only bought a 2022 race license plate.

Back to the RV and listened as they practiced for tomorrow's show before the race.  Twice we had military jets fly over us.

Later, we went to the Legion and listened to the band before returning to the RV and sitting outside.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 25

Met Kevin and Kelly at Donovan's Reef in Twin Lakes, Wisconsin.

THURSDAY, MAY 26

Packed for tomorrow's trip and went to Sunnyside Tavern in Johnsburg.

Sad time at the Fox Lake Historical Society this Monday as our long-time president died Thursday.

Liz and I went to the McHenry American Legion and enjoyed the $3 rail drinks ($1.50 during happy hour which really makes me happy.

20.  OH BROTHER WHERE ART THOU--  1-29--  The stairway to heaven.  Big Dan Teague, Bible salesman.  The fight at the Five & Dime.  Dapper Dan pomade.  He's a Dapper Dan Man.    "Do not seek the treasure."  The Soggy Bottom Boys.

21.  HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON--  1-30--  Toothless & Hiccup.  They didn't know as much about dragons as they thought... Hiccup gets the girl.

22.  BREAKFAST CLUB--  5-21--  We got all our major high school groups and get to see another side of Bender.  "You think I'm going to have you roaming these halls?"

23.  SIXTEEN CANDLES--  5-21--  Her birthday and her worst day ever.  Long Duk Dong, the weird Chinese guy in Mike's room.

24.  OH BROTHER WHERE ART THOU--  5-25--  He's bonafide.  He's the pater familias.

Gas Gouge Continues, a Fish Fry, Bars and Yardwork

FRIDAY, MAY 13

Sitting FP for coffee and enjoying the colors of trees, tulips and perennials.  I aim to have color in the yard all the way from April to the end of October.  Went to McDonald's for their two for $2 sausage/cheese McMuffins and $1 pop.  I love those McMuffins (and for that price especially).

Saw the movie "Fantastic Beasts:  The Secrets of Dumbledore."  It is good to be back in the theaters after a two-year period because on you-know-what.  Gas in Fox Lake to $4.80 and $4.90.  Who'd have ever figured.  You finally get a chance to go places and can't afford to go places.  Curse you GRBs.

Met Kevin and Kelly at Johnny's Cafe in Fox Lake for fish fry.  Then went to the Legion for 50-50, but too many people.  Same problem at Stucky's in Johnsburg, but finally got seats at the bar at Sunnyside.

SATURDAY, MAY 14

Got some yardwork done, primarily cutting down weed trees which are trying to take over the yard.  Went to Stucky's for burgers and sang karaoke with George.

SUNDAY, MAY 15

Went to the McHenry American Legion and enjoyed bourbon and Cokes for $3 (and especially $1.50 during happy hour).  Then Stucky's and home.

Hey, Bob Stroud, Try This Ten at Ten: 'Doctor My Eyes'

Bob Stroud does a great show on Chicago's WDRV, 97.1 FM every day at 10 am and 10 pm.    Lately, it seems he is running out of ideas.  I'd like to see him start doing a show like his old Time Warp that he used to do on his Rock and Roll Roots Sunday show.  This is where he played songs from one date back in the 1960s and 1970s.

Recently I did a WLS Top 30 from May 15, 1972, fifty years ago, and I think these ten songs from that list would make one great group.

Here they are (the number in front of the title is its position on the survey that day):

ASK ME WHAT YOU WANT-  Millie Jackson

21.   ME & JULIO DOWN BY THE SCHOOL YARD--  Paul Simon

18.  YOU COULD HAVE BEEN A LADY--  April Wine

14.  RUN, RUN, RUN--  Jo Jo Gunne

11.  DOCTOR MY EYES--  Jackson Browne

10.  SYLVIA'S MOTHER--  Dr. Hook

8.  BABY BLUE--  Badfinger

4.  LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE FOR ME--  Al Green

3.  BACK OFF BOOGALOO--  Ringo Starr

2.  OH GIRL--  Chi-Lites

I think you listeners would really like these.

Name That Tune (from the above songs):  "And The Operator Says Forty Cents More For The Next Three Minutes."  (Would a youngster today even have a clue what this was about?)    Answer below.  --RoadDog
