American singer-songwriter, guitarist and record producer. Best known for his song-writing, he won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1970 for "Games People Play" and was nominated in 1972 for "Rose Garden."He started his pop career in 1958 with "The Purple People Eater Meets the Witch Doctor."He then wrote a couple songs for Gene Vincent.
He began his recording career with the National Recording Corporation where he served as staff guitarist along with Ray Stevens and Jerry Reed. He was also a prominent sideman, playing guitar on Tommy Roe's "Sheila", Bob Dylan's "Blonde On Blonde" album, did the classic intro to Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools."
