The Beatles Are Coming!-- Part 9: Taking Britain First-- The British Invasion Taking Shape
Beatlemania really got started in the United States in January 1964, capped off by their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show February 9th, and we're coming up on the 50th anniversary of it this Sunday. I'll surely be watching the Grammy special with Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney. //// Anyway, back to the British charts for January 1964. Beatlemania had been increasing throughout 1963 and went into overdrive in JANUARY 1964: #2. "I Want to Hold Your Hand," #5. "She Loves You. #1 was "Glad All Over" by soon-to-be fellow British Invasion Dave Clark Five and #13 was a Beatles-written song by the Rolling Stones called "I Wanna Be Your Man." //// FEBRUARY: #12 "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was the only Beatle song in the top twenty this month. The Dave Clark Five had #5 with "Glad All Over" and #17. with "Bits and Pieces." //// MARCH: Beatles #18 with "Can't Buy Me Love." #2 "Bits and Pieces, #4 "Not Fade Away" by Rolling Stones, #6 "Just One Look" by the Hollies #7 "I Think of You" by the Merseybeats, #14 "I'm the One" by Gerry & the Pacemakers. At this point, the Beatles were leading the way for the British Invasion. //// --RoadDog
