JSIS: Bears Cartoon-- Round Lake Schools-- Round Lake Murder

JSIS: Just Some Interesting Stuff.

1. BEARS CARTOON-- A really good Scott Stantis political cartoon in the Jan. 23, 2011, Chicago Tribune. It shows Halas and Lombardi with fedoras pulled down and Soldiers Field in the background. They're looking at each other and both say, "It is SO on!" Sure wish it had been more on, not just the 4th quarter.

2. ROUND LAKE SCHOOLS-- Jan. 28, 2011, Chicago Tribune. Nine years ago, the Round Lake School District was in dire financial straits, so bad, the state took over control. It was on the edge of dissolving which put all surrounding districts into hysterics, not wanting to take out students.

It is about to be turned back over to local control.

The district, however, still has problems as students don't make the annual progress expected of them by the state. About 70% of them are Hispanic, more than 60% from low income families and 20% speak limited English.

A bright spot is the Schuler Scholar Program for high-performing students. Senior Kevin Vargas is going to Yale next year.

I taught all of my 33 years in this district.

3. ROUND LAKE MURDER-- Jan. 27th Chicago Tribune. Yesterday, I saw that a man had been arrested in Tennessee for a 1982 slaying in Round Lake Beach, Illinois, about two blocks from our house at the time. It was at a house being used for a local motorcycle club, the Wheelmen.

Lots of people saw it but wouldn't talk until recently and Robert Bostic was arrested for the murder of Carlton Richmond.

Glad to Hear It. --RoadDog
